Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Notifications provide a unique mechanism for increasing the effectiveness of real-time information delivery systems. However, notifications that demand users' attention at inopportune moments are more likely to have adverse effects and might become a cause of potential disruption rather than proving beneficial to users. In order to address these challenges a variety of intelligent notification mechanisms based on monitoring and learning users' behavior have been proposed. The goal of such mechanisms is maximizing users' receptivity to the delivered information by automatically inferring the right time and the right context for sending a certain type of information. This book presents an overview of the current state of the art in the area of intelligent notification mechanisms that rely on the awareness of users' context and preferences. We first present a survey of studies focusing on understanding and modeling users' interruptibility and receptivity to notifications from desktops and mobile devices. Then, we discuss the existing challenges and opportunities in developing mechanisms for intelligent notification systems in a variety of application scenarios.

Book excerpt: As the interconnectivity between humans through technical devices is becoming ubiquitous, the next step is already in the making: ambient intelligence, i.e. smart (technical) environments, which will eventually play the same active role in communication as the human players, leading to a co-evolution in all domains where real-time communication is essential. This topical volume, based on the findings of the Socionical European research project, gives equal attention to two highly relevant domains of applications: transport, specifically traffic, dynamics from the viewpoint of a socio-technical interaction and evacuation scenarios for large-scale emergency situations. Care was taken to investigate as much as possible the limits of scalability and to combine the modeling using complex systems science approaches with relevant data analysis.

Book excerpt: This book presents an overview of the components, approaches and techniques which are used to build a mobile phoneapplication that uses short messaging service (SMS) text messages to improve interaction, information distribution and communication of stakeholders in a university setting. The proposed application is built upon a multiple compatible mobile phone menu-based subscription management application that is also customizable. Since SMS has the potential to fill significantconnectivity and service gaps, this application can provide support for them to become more ubiquitous. Event-based approach towards context-aware personalized notification service is adopted, i.e. user will receive relevant immediate SMS to his/her mobile phone based on his/her subscription for preferred notifications. A trigger enables event management system to send out (semi-) automated personalized notification. Notification services that understand the context within which their users operate, i.e. identity, activity and time are derived based on a set of predetermined rules. This will benefit the stakeholders in terms of getting up-to-date notifications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many current AI and machine learning algorithms and data and information fusion processes attempt in software to estimate situations in our complex world of nested feedback loops. Such algorithms and processes must gracefully and efficiently adapt to technical challenges such as data quality induced by these loops, and interdependencies that vary in complexity, space, and time. To realize effective and efficient designs of computational systems, a Systems Engineering perspective may provide a framework for identifying the interrelationships and patterns of change between components rather than static snapshots. We must study cascading interdependencies through this perspective to understand their behavior and to successfully adopt complex system-of-systems in society. This book derives in part from the presentations given at the AAAI 2021 Spring Symposium session on Leveraging Systems Engineering to Realize Synergistic AI / Machine Learning Capabilities. Its 16 chapters offer an emphasis on pragmatic aspects and address topics in systems engineering; AI, machine learning, and reasoning; data and information fusion; intelligent systems; autonomous systems; interdependence and teamwork; human-computer interaction; trust; and resilience.

Book excerpt: AUTOMATED SECURE COMPUTING FOR NEXT-GENERATION SYSTEMS This book provides cutting-edge chapters on machine-empowered solutions for next-generation systems for today’s society. Security is always a primary concern for each application and sector. In the last decade, many techniques and frameworks have been suggested to improve security (data, information, and network). Due to rapid improvements in industry automation, however, systems need to be secured more quickly and efficiently. It is important to explore the best ways to incorporate the suggested solutions to improve their accuracy while reducing their learning cost. During implementation, the most difficult challenge is determining how to exploit AI and ML algorithms for improved safe service computation while maintaining the user’s privacy. The robustness of AI and deep learning, as well as the reliability and privacy of data, is an important part of modern computing. It is essential to determine the security issues of using AI to protect systems or ML-based automated intelligent systems. To enforce them in reality, privacy would have to be maintained throughout the implementation process. This book presents groundbreaking applications related to artificial intelligence and machine learning for more stable and privacy-focused computing. By reflecting on the role of machine learning in information, cyber, and data security, Automated Secure Computing for Next-Generation Systems outlines recent developments in the security domain with artificial intelligence, machine learning, and privacy-preserving methods and strategies. To make computation more secure and confidential, the book provides ways to experiment, conceptualize, and theorize about issues that include AI and machine learning for improved security and preserve privacy in next-generation-based automated and intelligent systems. Hence, this book provides a detailed description of the role of AI, ML, etc., in automated and intelligent systems used for solving critical issues in various sectors of modern society. Audience Researchers in information technology, robotics, security, privacy preservation, and data mining. The book is also suitable for postgraduate and upper-level undergraduate students.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a broad overview of the benefits from a Systems Engineering design philosophy in architecting complex systems composed of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning (ML) and humans situated in chaotic environments. The major topics include emergence, verification and validation of systems using AI/ML and human systems integration to develop robust and effective human-machine teams—where the machines may have varying degrees of autonomy due to the sophistication of their embedded AI/ML. The chapters not only describe what has been learned, but also raise questions that must be answered to further advance the general Science of Autonomy. The science of how humans and machines operate as a team requires insights from, among others, disciplines such as the social sciences, national and international jurisprudence, ethics and policy, and sociology and psychology. The social sciences inform how context is constructed, how trust is affected when humans and machines depend upon each other and how human-machine teams need a shared language of explanation. National and international jurisprudence determine legal responsibilities of non-trivial human-machine failures, ethical standards shape global policy, and sociology provides a basis for understanding team norms across cultures. Insights from psychology may help us to understand the negative impact on humans if AI/ML based machines begin to outperform their human teammates and consequently diminish their value or importance. This book invites professionals and the curious alike to witness a new frontier open as the Science of Autonomy emerges.
