Häufig ist die Rede von sich abschottenden Parallelgesellschaften, z.B. in Migrantenvierteln (‘Ghettos’) und der vermeintlichen Integrationsunwilligkeit bzw. dem Scheitern vieler Migranten. Dieses Buch will einen durch Zahlen belegten objektiven Blick auf die aktuellen Umstände werfen. Zunächst wird dafür die sozialwissenschaftliche Auseinandersetzung mit den theoretischen Begriffen der Migration, Assimilation und Integration überblicksmäßig vorgestellt, um die Ideengeschichte der modernen Definitionen zu verdeutlichen. Daraufhin wird ein historischer Abriss über die grundsätzlichen Unterschiede und Gemeinsamkeiten der deutschen und französischen staatlichen Integrationsmodelle gegeben, ohne den auch die aktuelle Debatte nicht nachzuvollziehen wäre. Dabei wird auch knapp auf die Rolle der EU eingegangen, die mittlerweile wesentliche Aspekte der Migrations- und Integrationspolitik ihrer Mitgliedsstaaten beeinflussen kann. Der eigentliche Vergleich beider Staaten wird dann mithilfe der theoretischen Grundlagen an einzelnen Themengebieten bearbeitet. Hierbei wird sowohl auf die staatlichen Maßnahmen als auch auf ihren vermeintlichen Erfolg oder Misserfolg in der Wahrnehmung der betroffenen Akteure eingegangen. Letztendlich wird auch die Debatte um die sogenannte ‚Leitkultur‘ und um ‚nationale Identität‘ einem kritischen Blick unterworfen. Ziel der Untersuchung soll es sein, die Integrationsmodelle beider Staaten sowie ihren Wandel vergleichend zu analysieren, Defizite und Vorteile auszumachen und einen kritischen Ausblick auf die bevorstehende Entwicklung und damit letztendlich auf mögliche Handlungshinweise zu geben. Im Mittelpunkt steht dabei die Frage, mit welchen Maßnahmen die Integration von Einwanderern bestmöglich gelingen kann.

Book excerpt: Anthropologists have written a great deal about the coastal adaptations and seafaring traditions of Pacific Islanders, but have had much less to say about the significance of rivers for Pacific island culture, livelihood and identity. The authors of this collection seek to fill that gap in the ethnographic record by drawing attention to the deep historical attachments of island communities to rivers, and the ways in which those attachments are changing in response to various forms of economic development and social change. In addition to making a unique contribution to Pacific island ethnography, the authors of this volume speak to a global set of issues of immense importance to a world in which water scarcity, conflict, pollution and the degradation of riparian environments afflict growing numbers of people. Several authors take a political ecology approach to their topic, but the emphasis here is less on hydro-politics than on the cultural meaning of rivers to the communities we describe. How has the cultural significance of rivers shifted as a result of colonisation, development and nation-building? How do people whose identities are fundamentally rooted in their relationship to a particular river renegotiate that relationship when the river is dammed to generate hydro-power or polluted by mining activities? How do blockages in the flow of rivers and underground springs interrupt the intergenerational transmission of local ecological knowledge and hence the ability of local communities to construct collective identities rooted in a sense of place?

Book excerpt: Developed countries, especially in Europe, face a number of issue related to migration: social and economic disruptions caused by the declining demand for unskilled labour and resulting unemployment, a shortage of skilled labour in many professions, increasing international competition for highly qualified human capital, radical demographic changes, and the forthcoming expansion of the European Union, which will trigger further immigration into major European countries and create new market opportunities in Central and Eastern Europe. This suggests a need for a deeper knowledge of the causes and consequences of increased labour mobility. This is especially important when it is associated with tension and fears among native populations. This book brings together analyses of migration issues in major European countries, and compares evidence with more countries that have traditionally seen the most immigration. First, it studies migration streams since World War II, and reviews major migration policy regimes. Second, it summarizes the empirical evidence measuring wages, unemployment, and occupational choices. Third, it investigates how migrants affects the labour markets of their host countries, and evaluates econometric studies into the wage and employment consequences of immigration. Surprisingly, there is wide evidence that immigration is largely beneficial for receiving countries. There might be phases of adjustment, but there is no convincing evidence that natives' wages are depressed or unemployment increases as a consequence of migrant inflow. However, there is a growing impression that migration does serve less and less the needs of the labour market. This suggests a stronger focus on economic channels of immigration, for which the book provides a conceptual basis and the required empirical facts and institutional background.
