Brooks, a distinguished professor of law and a writer on matters of race and civil rights, says with frank clarity what few will admit - integration hasn't worked and possibly never will. Equally, he casts doubt on the solution that many African Americans and mainstream whites have advocated: total separation of the races. This book presents Brooks's strategy for a middle way between the increasingly unworkable extremes of integration and separation.

Book excerpt: Economic needs as well as ecological demands are major driving forces in improving chemical processes and plants. To meet these goals processes have to be intensified in order to get products of higher quality, to increase yield by reducing or even suppressing by-products and to minimise energy consumption. A preferred principle for such intensifications is process - tegration, especially integration of reaction and separation operations. S- entific research in this field has been boosted by certain extremely succe- ful examples like the Eastman-Kodak process for methyl acetate or the MTBE process which are milestones for this method. In 2002 the German Research Foundation defined process integration as one of the major - search topics for the next decade. In 1998 the Department of Biochemical- and Chemical Engineering at the University of Dortmund decided to pool its activities for concerted - forts in process integration and to form a joint research cluster. Our interest was to find out the general challenges as well as obstacles of integrated processes and to work out methods for their design and valuation. Soon it became clear that theoretical work only cannot give reasonable answers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first to investigate the effects of participation in separation or divorce proceedings on femicide (murder of a female), femicide-suicide, homicide, and suicide. Because separation is one of the most significant predictors of domestic violence, this book is exclusively devoted to theorizing, researching, and preventing lethal domestic violence or other assaults triggered by marital separation. The authors provide evidence supporting the use of an estrangement-specific risk assessment and estrangement-focused public education to prevent murders and assaults. This information is needed not only by instructors in criminal justice and sociology programs, but by researchers theorizing about or investigating domestic violence. In the world of practitioners, family court judges, divorce mediators, family lawyers, prosecutors involved in bail hearings, shelter staff, and family counselors urgently need this resource. Ellis et al. include discussion questions and chapter objectives to support learners in the classroom or in community-based settings, and instructor support material includes PowerPoint lecture slides, additional teaching and research resources, and a test bank. This text advocates convincingly for prevention of domestic violence, and gives academics and practitioners the tools they need. Book excerpt: Diploma Thesis from the year 2010 in the subject Ethics, grade: 1.7, University of Tubingen (Chair of Bank Management and International Centre for Ethics in the Sciences and Humanities (IZEW)), language: English, abstract: On the one hand, our rapidly developing economy transforms scientific and technological advancement, irreversibility as well as difficult adjustability within liberalizing global activity into powerful instruments for top management of multinational corporations in terms of economic value creation. On the other hand, this economy gathers human beings especially as moral subjects (and not just economical objects); moreover, human beings with diametrically distinct cultural and religious (i.e., moral) orientations. That means, managers necessarily need to apply and justify responsible and consistent use of their instruments (i.e., ethical value creation/consideration). Is this not the case, efficiency principles of so called "theories of management ethics" relate exclusively to the economic side (but not to the ethical one). At first, this interdisciplinary diploma thesis therefore defines four variables (disciplinary integration, theoretical integration, justification and application), which an integrative or interdisciplinary theory of academic management ethics necessarily needs to have. Second, two concept of management ethics are analyzed, that both rise the claim of being such a theory. The first concept (corporate social performance) is positive-economically biased, whereas the second (integrative management ethics) is normative-ethically biased. The thesis finds, at first, that the former concept completely lacks of justification, whereas application is very high. The latter concept is completely justified but still lacks in application. Secondly, disciplinary integration and theoretical integration are positive correlated to application and justification until a certain degree. Third, the cognitive state of universalethical- principle orien

Book excerpt: Brazil and Latin America: Between the Separation and Integration Paths challenges the “separatist” bias in the vision of Brazilian relations with its Latin American neighbors. By exploring the parallel existence of a path of integration, the focus of this study is on those forces which have intended to forge different forms of alignment, integration, and, sometimes, rightward union between Brazil and different Latin American countries. The authors analyze the ideas and projects inherent in the mindset of elites even before independence. They show that the path of integration has been more influential than is generally known. Ultimately, this book demonstrates the complexity around policy-making, debates on foreign policy, and the history of shaping the Brazilian self.

Book excerpt: "A calculative method is presented for determining separated, laminar, boundary-layer characteristics from in front of the separation point to the reattachment point under the influence of 'free interaction' between the main flow and the boundary layer. The analysis covers supersonic flow over two-dimensional and axisymmetric configurations with adiabatic or nonadiabatic wall conditions. For nonadiabatic wall conditions, theories based on first-order coupling and second-order coupling between velocity and total temperature profiles were presented. The theory based on first-order coupling was included in a machine calculation program with options for two-dimensional or axisymmetric flow and adiabatic or nonadiabatic wall conditions. Extensive systematic calculations were made to determine the range of possible separated flows over a two-dimensional configuration as a function of separation point location and wall temperatures. Comparison between experiment and theory for separation pressure distributions on two-dimensional or axisymmetric adiabatic configurations shows generally good agreement. Good comparison between experiment and theory is indicated for a moderately-cooled axisymmetric configuration. For a highly-cooled axisymmetric configuration, the prediction of the machine program based on first-order coupling is inadequate, indicating the necessity for a higher-order coupling theory." -- page iii.

World-renowned researchers present the latest theoretical developments and thought-provoking empirical data. In doing so, they cover a broad range of communicative activities, including text comprehension, conversational communication, argumentation, television or media viewing, and more. A central theme across all chapters concerns the notion that coherence determines the interpretation of the communication. The various chapters illustrate the many forms that coherence can take, and explore its role in different communicative settings.

Yet, school integration was not the only-or even always the dominant-civil rights strategy. At times, African Americans also fought for separate, Black-controlled schools dedicated to racial uplift, community empowerment, and self-determination. An African American Dilemma offers a social history of debates over school integration within northern Black communities from the 1840s to the present. This broad geographical and temporal focus reveals that northern Black educational activists vacillated between a preference for either school integration or separation during specific eras. Yet, as there was never a consensus, this study also highlights the chorus of dissent, debate, and counter-narratives that pushed families to consider a fuller range of educational reforms. A sweeping historical analysis that covers the entire history of public education in the North, this study complicates our understanding of school integration by highlighting the diverse perspectives of Black students, parents, teachers, and community leaders all committed to improving public education. It finds that Black school integrationists and separatists have worked together in a dynamic tension that fueled effective strategies for educational reform and the black civil rights movement. This study draws on an enormous range of archival data including the black press, school board records, social science studies, the papers of civil rights activists, and court cases"--

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides a thoughtful and wide-ranging exploration of approaches to the critical study of advertising. Current and impending practices of advertising have in many ways exceeded the grasp of traditional modes of critique, due at least in part to their being formulated in very different historical conditions. To begin to address this lag, this edited collection explores through critical discussion and application a variety of critical approaches to advertising. Authors address a variety of concrete examples in their chapters, drawing on existing research while presenting new findings where relevant. In order to maintain the relevance of this collection past this particular historical moment, however, chapters do not simply report on empirical work, but develop a theoretical argument.
