Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited book argues that a new perspective on immigration is needed. As many advanced economies are ageing, and their populations stagnate or decline, immigrants are increasingly required to fill in the gaps left behind by shrinking workforces. Against this backdrop, the outdated view that it is – and can only be – a privilege for immigrants to move temporarily from less to more developed economies needs a rethink. In particular, questions about how attractive a host destination can be for immigrants; not just in economic, but also in social, political, linguistic, and cultural terms should be raised. Considering in detail the situation in Japan and Germany – Japan where there are hardly any convenience stores without foreign employees, Germany where retirement homes would no longer function without foreign nursing staff – the book analyses migration to these two countries in different aspects such as education, training, and labour market participation, and policies and actions on the part of the state and policymakers in rendering moving to and living in these countries worthwhile. Bringing together leading scholars active in diverse aspects of migration in Japan and Germany, this book will be a valuable resource to students and scholars with an interest in immigration issues in these two countries specifically, and Europe and Asia more broadly.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The images are shocking and upsetting: drowned children washing up on beaches, dozens of dead bodies being pulled out of tractor trailers, a mass of humanity penned up in detention camps and tent cities, anti-immigrant rallies characterized by fearful and hate-filled invective. Yet there are also images of refugees being embraced by ordinary citizens and welcomed into their countries, their communities, even their homes. What to do about a growing and endemic refugee crisis and migrant labor population in an age of globalization, terrorism, and income inequality is a question with no simple answers. This volume presents the widest possible range of opinions from reputable sources across the political spectrum and encouragers readers to consider all viewpoints before formulating their own reasoned and informed perspective.

This book investigates the ways in which education is both a dream solution as well as a contested landscape for refugee families and students. Using comparative, cross-national perspectives across five continents, the editors and contributors critically analyze the educational structures, policies, and practices intended to support refugee youth transition from conflict and post-conflict zones to mainstream classrooms and schools in their new communities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Terminology on Accessible Communication has primarily evolved and been published within the borders of a given country with no or only little exchange across these borders. Since English can be regarded as the lingua franca of science, this first German–English dictionary of Accessible Communication will help to promote international exchange and an international discourse on this topic by attempting to define concepts that go beyond the scope of a single-country centered approach. The terminological work for this dictionary is based on the German Handbook of Accessible Communication. Most of the handbook’s contents are language-independent and applicable to other recipient communities. On the basis of the German terminology, the English equivalents, definitions and explanations were researched. The dictionary contributes to the development of a standardised terminology across languages and cultures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is required to achieve civic integration and citizenship in nation states across the world? Should language testing be a part of it? This book addresses the urgent need to develop a fuller conceptual and theoretical basis for language testing than is currently available, to enable widespread discussion of this theme and the concomitant linguistic and cultural requirements. The policy proposals for civic integration have so far been conducted almost entirely at a national level, and with little regard for the experiences of a countries with long traditions of migration, such as the USA, Canada, the UK or Australia. At the same time, EU enlargment and the ongoing rise in the rate of migration into and across Europe suggest that these issues will continue to grow in importance. This book raises the level of discussion to take account of international developments and to promote a more coherent and soundly based debate. It will appeal to researchers and academics working in sociolinguistics and language education, as well as those working on language policy.

Book excerpt: An insightful philosophical essay on the work of minimalist sculptor Carl Andre by Brooklyn-based poet and critic Jeremy Sigler (b.1968). While researching and editing the catalog for Andres recent retrospective at Dia Art Foundation, Sigler gleaned surprising new readings from a series of lost negatives that resurfaced at Dia. Shot by Andres close friend and collaborator Hollis Frampton in the 1960s, the photos depict small, carved wooden artworksmany lost or destroyed shortly after being photographed. Sigler draws connections between these early inchoate artworks and Andres later scatters, spills and floor pieces, all of which are analyzed through a compellingly personal lens. Writing on Andres poetry and his confounding book-length masterpiece, Stillanovel, Sigler further proposes that Andres greatest contribution may be to literature. Is it possible that one of the modern eras greatest experimental love poets is hiding in plain sight, disguised as a unionized blue-chip art worker? Sigler taught at Yale University School of Arts, edited the Swiss art journal Parkett, and has published numerous books of poetry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In contrast to most migration studies that focus on specific “foreigner” groups in Germany, this study simultaneously compares and contrasts the legal, political, social, and economic opportunity structures facing diverse categories of the ethnic minorities who have settled in the country since the 1950s. It reveals the contradictory, and usually self-defeating, nature of German policies intended to keep “migrants” out—allegedly in order to preserve a German Leitkultur (with which very few of its own citizens still identify). The main barriers to effective integration—and socioeconomic revitalization in general—sooner lie in the country’s obsolete labor market regulations and bureaucratic procedures. Drawing on local case studies, personal interviews, and national surveys, the author describes “the human faces” behind official citizenship and integration practices in Germany, and in doing so demonstrates that average citizens are much more multi-cultural than they realize.
