Book excerpt: In most recent years, there has been a push towards building a multiculturally competent classroom. Teachers are a leading influence on which books are selected for their classrooms. In 2015, a sample size of children's books indicated that 73% of the books featured White characters while in 2018, 50% of the books featured White characters (David Huyck et al., 2015). Though there has been an increase in promoting a multicultural book selection, there is also a need towards training teachers on how to adequately select books that are genuinely a representation of diverse populations. In this thesis, the researcher creates a book selecting guide that helps teachers navigate the process of selecting high-quality multicultural literature. Through a sample size of 20 teacher participants, it was found that while teachers were aware of multicultural competence they still lacked the knowledge for determining authentic books. This study was guided through the literature review that highlighted the following themes: Multicultural Literature, Cultural Competency, and Self-Identity. The research findings reveal how teachers in a Title 1 school in a highly diverse community are culturally competent. This thesis is designed with the purpose of offering a tool for educators to create an inclusive classroom environment through the use of multicultural literature.
