Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Segregation is deepening in American schools as courts terminate desegregation plans, residential segregation spreads, the proportion of whites in the population falls, and successful efforts to use choice for desegregation, such as magnet schools, are replaced by choice plans with no civil rights requirements. Based on the fruits of a collaboration between the Civil Rights Project at Harvard University and the Southern Poverty Law Center, the essays presented in Lessons in Integration: Realizing the Promise of Racial Diversity in American Schools analyze five decades of experience with desegregation efforts in order to discover the factors accounting for successful educational experiences in an integrated setting. Starting where much political activity and litigation, as well as most previous scholarship, leaves off, this collection addresses the question of what to do--and to avoid doing--once classrooms are integrated, in order to maximize the educational benefits of diversity for students from a wide array of backgrounds. Rooted in substantive evidence that desegregation is a positive educational and social force, that there were many successes as well as some failures in the desegregation movement, and that students in segregated schools, whether overwhelmingly minority or almost completely white, are disadvantaged on some important educational and social dimensions when compared to their peers in well-designed racially diverse schools, this collection builds on but also goes beyond previous research in taking account of increasing racial and ethnic diversity that distinguishes present-day American society from the one addressed by the Brown decision a half-century ago. In a society with more than 40 percent nonwhite students and thousands of suburban communities facing racial change, it is critical to learn the lessons of experience and research regarding the effective operation of racially diverse and inclusive schools. Lessons in Integration will make a significant contribution to knowledge about how to make integration work, and as such, it will have a positive effect on educational practice while providing much-needed assistance to increasingly beleaguered proponents of integrated public education.

The essential elements of music discussed include perception and creativity, sources and stimulation, and the integration of musical creativity in diverse cultures and participation. It focuses on three Chinese cities; Changsha and Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China, which have creative industries, and Shijiazhuang, which has cultural industries. Readers will gain insights into the introduction of creativity into the Chinese education system through music, particularly during the pandemic. The author analyses official documents, selected music textbooks adopted by schools, questionnaire surveys, and in-depth interviews with both students and teachers. These interviews reveal the underbelly of the dilemmas of introducing creativity into schools through music education. The volume will be of interest to those keen to increase creativity in teaching through music, and researchers in the fields of creativity and music education. It will also interest students undertaking Chinese, teacher education, or music.

This report identifies and characterizes existing approaches to integrated STEM education, both in formal and after- and out-of-school settings. The report reviews the evidence for the impact of integrated approaches on various student outcomes, and it proposes a set of priority research questions to advance the understanding of integrated STEM education. STEM Integration in K-12 Education proposes a framework to provide a common perspective and vocabulary for researchers, practitioners, and others to identify, discuss, and investigate specific integrated STEM initiatives within the K-12 education system of the United States. STEM Integration in K-12 Education makes recommendations for designers of integrated STEM experiences, assessment developers, and researchers to design and document effective integrated STEM education. This report will help to further their work and improve the chances that some forms of integrated STEM education will make a positive difference in student learning and interest and other valued outcomes.

Book excerpt: To better identify and assist struggling students and avoid unnecessary placement into special education services, the service delivery model response to intervention (RTI) is used with the general education population. Even though RTI has been studied in elementary schools for many years, further research on its use at the secondary academic level is scarce. Advanced Strategies and Models for Integrating RTI in Secondary Schools provides emerging research exploring the advanced theoretical and practical aspects of the use of RTI to assist teachers in providing research-based instructional strategies to students who are failing their academic subjects. Featuring coverage on a broad range of topics such as behavioral response, progress monitoring, and career readiness, this book is ideally designed for educators, researchers, and academic professionals seeking current research on the most effective models in place to promote positive student academic achievement.

Book excerpt: This book explores diverse relationships at play in integrating Indigenous knowledges and Western Science in curricula. The readers will unravel ways in which history, policy, and relationships with local Indigenous communities play a role in developing and implementing ‘cross-cultural’ science curricula in schools. Incorporating stories from multiple individuals involved in curriculum development and implementation – university professors, a ministry consultant, a First Nations and Métis Education coordinator, and most importantly, classroom teachers – this book offers suggestions for education stakeholders at different levels. Focusing on the importance of understanding ‘relationships at play’, this book also shows the author’s journey in re/search, wherein she grapples with both Indigenous and Western research frameworks. Featuring a candid account of this journey from research preparation to writing, this book also offers insights on the relationships at play in doing re/search that respects Indigenous ways of coming to know.
