Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insect Pests of Millets: Systematics, Bionomics, and Management focuses on protecting the cultivated cereals that many worldwide populations depend on for food across the semi-arid tropics of the world. Providing coverage of all the major cultivated millets, including sorghum, pearlmillet, finger millet, barnyard millet, prosomillet, little millet, kodomillet, and foxtail millet, this comprehensive book on insect pests is the first of its kind that explores systematics, bionomics, distribution, damage, host range, biology, monitoring techniques, and management options, all accompanied by useful illustrations and color plates. Includes the most comprehensive and relevant aspects of insect systematics, including synonyms, nomenclatural history, and identification characters to quickly guide readers to desired information Addresses aspects of insect-plant relationships, including host signaling and orientation, host specialization, pest – host evolutionary relationship, and biogeography of insects and host plant Presents the latest research findings related to the ecological, behavioral, and physiological aspects of millet pests
Book Synopsis African Cereal Stem Borers by : Andrew Polaszek
Download or read book African Cereal Stem Borers written by Andrew Polaszek and published by Cabi. This book was released on 1998 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An assemblage of approximately twenty moth species belonging to the families Crambidae, Pyralidae and Noctuidae constitute the most important cereal pests in many parts of Africa. The caterpillars of these moths bore into the stems of maize, sorghum, millet and rice, often killing the plant, and are commonly known as stem or stalk borers. The cereals attacked are grown on small farms to feed the farmers and their families and are of great importance as the staple food for the population in most parts of Africa. Complex control measures, including the use of chemicals, are often inappropriate. This book provides the information necessary for pursuing integrated pest management of African cereal stem borers, in particular strategies using natural enemy components. The book begins by characterizing the economically important species by region and by their biology and host plants. The book then describes in detail the taxonomy and rearing techniques for the moths, their larvae and their natural enemies. It includes illustrated keys of species and lists of distributions and hosts, and it concludes with a summary of current control measures and those being investigated.
Book Synopsis Plant Resistance to Insects in Sorghum by : H.C. Sharma
Download or read book Plant Resistance to Insects in Sorghum written by H.C. Sharma and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 205 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sorghum is one of the most important cereals in the semi-arid tropics. Nearly 150 insect species have been reported to damage the crop worldwide, causing an estimated loss of over U$1000 million annually. Of these, shoot fly, stem borers, greenbug, sugarcane aphid, shoot bug, spider, mites, armysorms, midge, head bug, and head caterpillars are the major pests. Plant resistance to insects is one of the most important components of pest management in sorghum. Thus, the 18 specialist scientists who have contributed the 25 papers included in the book, that is based on a training course for researchers involved in the development of insect-resistant cultivars for integrated pest management in sustainable agriculture, describe and discuss the theoretical and practical aspects of resistance-screening techniques, mechanisms and inheritance of resistance, breeding for resistance, statistical designs, and strategies for integrated pest management. Information has also been provided about the international sorghum insect resistance testing program and the role of networks in collaborative research and technology exchange.
Book Synopsis Integrated Pest Management in Diverse Cropping Systems by : Devendra Pal Singh
Download or read book Integrated Pest Management in Diverse Cropping Systems written by Devendra Pal Singh and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-02-01 with total page 533 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Climate change has intensified in recent decades, which has affected crop production as well as facilitated the emergence of new diseases and insect pests, causing serious threats to agriculture. Farmers have mostly taken a crop-based approach to insect pest management (IPM); the authors of this new volume, however, take the unique approach that IPM based on specific cropping systems is more efficient, resulting in reduced cultivation costs, increased yield and profitability, and decreased residue from crop produce and products. This volume presents the results of research done by crop protection scientists on integrated pest management in diverse cropping systems based on rice, wheat, maize, pulses, food legumes, oilseeds, groundnut, potato, and other horticulture crops. With chapters written by well-known and experienced scientists in their fields, this volume provides in-depth knowledge on integrated pest management in conjunction with an array of specific cropping systems, taking into consideration all the elements, including the crops, crop sequences, spatial and temporal aspects of managing an agricultural system, and other aspects. This volume will be valuable for entomologists, plant pathologists, and agronomists, as well as for farmers—both small and industrial sized, agricultural extension centers, faculty and students, and many others involved with crop cultivation.
Book Synopsis Integrated Pest Management Systems for Sugarcane Aphid in Grain Sorghum by : Phillip Joseph Haar
Download or read book Integrated Pest Management Systems for Sugarcane Aphid in Grain Sorghum written by Phillip Joseph Haar and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studies were conducted utilizing an integrated pest management approach to control the invasive pest the sugarcane aphid, Melanaphis sacchari, in grain sorghum. The study took place from 2016-2017 at Griffin, Tifton and Plains, Georgia, USA from May to October. During this research a pathogenic fungus, Lecanicillium lecani, was discovered attacking sugarcane aphid. Integrated tactics included four variables: planting date, insecticidal seed treatment, foliar insecticides, and plant tolerance/resistance. Early planting was effective in reducing damage and increasing yields when compared to the late planting. Additionally, the resistant variety and use of a foliar insecticide application was uniform in terms of yield despite treatment type and yielded more than the susceptible variety overall. We concluded that an earlier planting date coupled with a resistant variety and judicious use of a foliar insecticide produced the best yielding outcome.
Book Synopsis Pests and Their Management by : Omkar
Download or read book Pests and Their Management written by Omkar and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-08-01 with total page 1075 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book comprehensively compiles information on some of the major pests that afflict agricultural, horticultural and medicinal crops in particular as well as many polyphagous pests. Not only does this book deal with the pests of common globally produced crops it also addresses those of rarely dealt with crops such as seed spices, medicinal and aromatic plants. While the perspective of insect pests is largely Indian and South East Asian in context, the book does deal with globally problematic pests, particularly polyphagous ones. Not only will the readers be acquainted with the pests, their damaging potential and their life cycle but also with the latest methods of managements including ecofriendly measures being employed to keep pest populations at manageable levels. The 27 chapters in the book, are grouped into four sections primarily based on crop types, viz. pest of agricultural, horticultural and medicinal crops, and polyphagous pests, making the book easy to navigate. Each of the chapters is comprehensive and well illustrated and written by academicians who have dedicated their entire lives to the study of a particular crop-pest complex. The final chapter of this book provides an overview on the principles and processes of pest management.
