Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Integrated management systems (IMS) are an innovative way of handling the plethora of management functions and procedures that are applied throughout major construction projects. Contracting companies use management systems to shape and define the corporate arrangement of their business activities, translating these into operational procedures for application to the construction projects they undertake. The management of quality, environment, and safety are at the forefront of systems evolution where the integration of these traditionally independent and dedicated standards-based and process-orientated systems can provide the potential to deliver greater organisational efficiency and effectiveness. This is the first textbook to cover each of the international standards for quality, safety and environment (ISO9000, ISO14001 and ISO18001) and to discuss integrating them. This book provides a detailed yet accessible text to support the study of quality, environment, and safety management systems on professionally accredited undergraduate courses throughout the built environment and for advanced postgraduate courses in construction, project, and engineering management. It is also an indispensible reference for construction professionals working for principal contractors, subcontractors and construction industry supply chain organisations.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on current subcontracting practices in the construction industry and their effects on Singapore’s construction productivity. It offers readers a better understanding of how the fragmentation of large and small firms in Singapore impacts construction productivity when operating under the commonly adopted multilayer subcontracting system (MLSS), which extends globally to the construction industries in other countries that have adopted the MLSS. The book also assesses the effectiveness of subcontracting practices in helping local contractors improve their construction productivity (and thereby improve the industry’s overall productivity). In closing, it provides recommendations on how the problems associated with the MLSS can best be addressed, and how its benefits can be capitalized on through organizational learning.

Book Synopsis Managing Construction Industry Development by : George Ofori
Download or read book Managing Construction Industry Development written by George Ofori and published by NUS Press. This book was released on 1993 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study looks at how the construction industry of developing countries can be improved, with special attention to the role and importance of a central agency in administering the industry's continuous development. The book first reviews the nature and problems facing the construction industry in developing countries and the recommendations commonly made, which in turn show the need for action of a different nature. Part 2 then focuses on the Singapore experience over a 25-year period as it attempted to develop its industry without a central agency for construction development, later set up as the CIBD of Singapore, while Part 3 considers the circumstances behind the Board's formation and assesses its work. Lessons from Singapore's experience especially relating to the setting up and work of a central agency, and factors contributing to the success of such an agency, are discussed in the final part.
Book Synopsis Selective Integration of Management Systems by : Panos Chountalas
Download or read book Selective Integration of Management Systems written by Panos Chountalas and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Purpose: Despite the widely recognized benefits of integrating management systems, many multi-certified organizations continue to implement two or more systems separately. This can happen either through ignorance or by deliberate intent. Focusing on the second reason, this paper aims to examine a number of factors that can lead an organization to consciously choose not to integrate all of its management systems.Design/methodology/approach: The paper presents a case study of a construction company that has integrated the environmental management system and the occupational health and safety management system which implies that the company is familiar with the practice of integration while choosing to implement the quality management system separately from the other two.Findings: The findings of this study show that the reasons that led the company not to integrate all of its systems are not so much related to the compatibility of these systems, but are much deeper and have implications that touch upon its basic principles and values. Despite the occurrence of some organizational and operational problems (such as complexity of administrative issues and bureaucracy), the separate implementation of the systems allowed the company to preserve both the balance between the powers of its executives and the ability to attach special importance to each area: quality, environment, health and safety.Originality/value: This study will be useful in order to understand that selective integration of management systems is based on the belief that integration is not a de facto desirable goal, especially when the estimated cost-benefit ratio of non-integration is better than that of integration.

Book Synopsis Building a World Class Construction Industry by : Mohammed Fadhil Dulaimi
Download or read book Building a World Class Construction Industry written by Mohammed Fadhil Dulaimi and published by NUS Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The construction industry has developed an image of being the least developed sector of the economy in most countries. The industry is consistently being accused of failing its customers and providing products and services that do not meet expectations. The C21 steering committee has led a national review of the state of the construction industry in Singapore, which was completed, with the publication of the C21 report in October 1999. The report provided an analysis of the state of the industry and a set of recommendations. The committee set a vision for the construction industry for the 21st century to be a world-class builder in the knowledge age. This study builds on the work of the C21 Steering Committee and working groups, and the conclusions of the C21 report. The eight-month study addresses the question of how Singapore's construction industry can change and improve itself. The study starts with a comparison of the C21 report with similar reviews in the UK and Australia. The main fundamental problems and challenges facing the construction industry are not unique but universal. The latest review in the UK, which was one of several in the last 50 years, was different as it was mainly client led. The Australian initiative was part of a national action agenda to improve the different sectors of the industry. This had an impact on the nature of the conclusions and recommendations. The study examined the impact of the C21 report on the construction industry. The study received and analysed survey responses from 200 companies involved in construction including clients, contractors, subcontractors, consultants, specialist contractors, suppliers and manufacturers. The study has established that the level of awareness of the C21 report is not high. Also the respondents provided only moderate support to the potential of the C21 to improve the state of the industry. Therefore, the study strongly recommends a more effective dissemination program to inform the industry of the rationale and philosophies of C21. This program should include discussion forums and feedback on the barriers and enablers for greater improvements. The study has identified 12 key factors that are seen to impede the attempts of the industry to improve its business activities. The industry has, collectively, also identified the main problems to be: client focus on the lowest price at the tendering stage; and the narrow profit margins in construction business activities. However, the different sectors in the industry expressed different views. The study then examined the C21 strategic thrusts and studied the possible enablers and motivators that would help the industry to achieve improvements under nine several categories. The study also explored the differing views in the different groupings. Upon closer examination of the results of the study, one theme that underpins many of the potential solutions is that sustained improvement in a market driven economy can only be recognized by creating the market forces that would demand these improvements. Therefore, the study recommends that an effective way to improve construction business is to adopt a market driven agenda for improvement aimed at delivering changes and improvements that are focused on providing better value products and services to the customer. A key to the achievement of this aim is for the clients of the construction industry led by the biggest among them, to adopt practices that would facilitate this change and empower the industry to realize its potential.
Book Synopsis Project Quality Management by : Sui Pheng Low
Download or read book Project Quality Management written by Sui Pheng Low and published by Springer Science & Business. This book was released on 2014-04-29 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents the development of the Construction Quality Assessment System (CONQUAS), Singapore’s de facto quality performance measurement system, explains the application of the Quality Management System (QMS) to manage CONQUAS and identifies 33 critical success factors (CSFs) for achieving high CONQUAS scores. Through CONQUAS, the reader benefits from understanding how the Singapore government developed and implemented the first objective system for measuring what many building professionals have perceived to be elusive quality standards in the construction industry. The book presents both the theoretical concepts as well as the practical aspects to achieving strategic Project Quality Management that is anchored on the CSFs to building best practices. To realistically reflect the practical aspects and challenging issues faced by stakeholders in the construction industry, questionnaire surveys were conducted with building professionals to distinguish the importance level and extent of adoption of the 33 CSFs (identified from a comprehensive review of the extant literature) in influencing and affecting the achievement of high CONQUAS scores. These were further anchored by in-depth interviews with quality experts in the Singapore construction industry to provide a better understanding of issues relating to strategic Project Quality Management. Collectively, the empirical findings collated from the building professionals suggest that while the CSFs identified are known tenets of quality, these were still not being followed in their totality. A further case study was conducted through a formal set of in-depth interviews with the quality assurance team of a construction company who has direct involvement before, during and after their tremendous improvements in the CONQUAS scores attained. The strength of this book therefore represents a true account and reflections of real-life practices and experiences in the construction industry for contractors, quality managers and policy-makers to learn from. Although the context of this book relates to the Singapore experience, the lessons and recommendations are equally relevant and applicable to the global construction industry in both the developing and developed countries whose stakeholders (in both the public and private sectors) wish to understand how CONQUAS works, and how the CSFs identified can likewise be implemented for strategic Project Quality Management to building best practices. The book is therefore of interests to researchers, academia and practitioners in the construction industry as well as in other sectors of the economy (in Singapore and other countries) where learning points may be used for enhancing project quality management for buildings.

Book Synopsis Industry 4.0 Solutions for Building Design and Construction by : Farzad Pour Rahimian
Download or read book Industry 4.0 Solutions for Building Design and Construction written by Farzad Pour Rahimian and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2021-12-20 with total page 421 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides in-depth results and case studies in innovation from actual work undertaken in collaboration with industry partners in Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (AEC). Scientific advances and innovative technologies in the sector are key to shaping the changes emerging as a result of Industry 4.0. Mainstream Building Information Management (BIM) is seen as a vehicle for addressing issues such as industry fragmentation, value-driven solutions, decision-making, client engagement, and design/process flow; however, advanced simulation, computer vision, Internet of Things (IoT), blockchain, machine learning, deep learning, and linked data all provide immense opportunities for dealing with these challenges and can provide evidenced-based innovative solutions not seen before. These technologies are perceived as the “true” enablers of future practice, but only recently has the AEC sector recognised terms such as “golden key” and “golden thread” as part of BIM processes and workflows. This book builds on the success of a number of initiatives and projects by the authors, which include seminal findings from the literature, research and development, and practice-based solutions produced for industry. It presents these findings through real projects and case studies developed by the authors and reports on how these technologies made a real-world impact. The chapters and cases in the book are developed around these overarching themes: • BIM and AEC Design and Optimisation: Application of Artificial Intelligence in Design • BIM and XR as Advanced Visualisation and Simulation Tools • Design Informatics and Advancements in BIM Authoring • Green Building Assessment: Emerging Design Support Tools • Computer Vision and Image Processing for Expediting Project Management and Operations • Blockchain, Big Data, and IoT for Facilitated Project Management • BIM Strategies and Leveraged Solutions This book is a timely and relevant synthesis of a number of cogent subjects underpinning the paradigm shift needed for the AEC industry and is essential reading for all involved in the sector. It is particularly suited for use in Masters-level programs in Architecture, Engineering, and Construction.
