Book excerpt: Treatments included 1) ACV, 2) yeast-sugar-water, 3) yeast-sugar-water with whole wheat flour, dish detergent, and ACV, and 4) rice vinegar and red grape wine with dish detergent. The two yeast baits captured significantly more SWD than the vinegar baits. Finally, a field-based laboratory bioassay was used to identify chemical tools for managing SWD in blueberries. Seven treatments including 1) Belay® (high and low rate), 3) Danitol® (high and low rate), 5) Mustang Max®, 6) Delegate®, and 7) a water-treated control were evaluated against SWD. Belay® (both rates) was ineffective at reducing SWD adult activity throughout the 14 day experiment. Danitol® (both rates), Mustang Max®, and Delegate® were equally effective at reducing adult activity up to seven days. Danitol® (both rates) also reduced larval emergence. Successful tactics will be integrated into an IPM program for management of SWD in southern blueberries.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura) (Diptera: Drosophilidae), the spotted wing drosophila (SWD), is the most important pest affecting berry crop production worldwide. The global fresh fruit trade, coupled with the ability of the larvae to hide inside the fruit undetected until after transportation, facilitate their distribution. SWD is native to Asia, but is increasingly found in other regions: occurrences have been recorded in the Americas and Europe, and Africa, and the insects have the potential to adapt and become established in Oceania. Gathering the experiences of leading scientists in the management of D. suzukii around the globe, the book addresses D. suzukii monitoring; biological, chemical and cultural control; sterile insect technique (SIT); integrated pest management (IPM), and other control methods. It also discusses the use of drones, GPS, biotechnology, telemetry and other technological tools to make the management of this pest more efficient and accurate. As such, it is a valuable resource for scientists, professionals and students.

Book excerpt: Spotted wing drosophila (SWD), Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura) is a serious invasive pest of small fruit production in North and South America and Europe since 2008. The primary control method is to apply insecticides every 5-7 days. Therefore, it is necessary to develop control tactics that are less chemical dependent to enhance an integrated approach for SWD management. The objectives of this study were to monitor SWD populations in different crop systems and adjacent landscape habitats; identify wild hosts of SWD; evaluate the effectiveness of insect exclusion netting in tunnels to prevent blackberry and blueberry infestations, and compare effects of netted tunnels on temperature and fruit quality. The majority of seasonal averages of SWD were lower in the traps placed in fruit crop plots than in the perimeter traps located next to a refuse pile of culled fruit and mulch than the traps located in host crop species. Of the potential wild fruit hosts sampled in Arkansas, these 12 had SWD infested fruit: wild blackberry and dewberry (Rubus spp.), American pokeweed (Phytolacca americana L.), black cherry (Prunus serotina Ehrh.), Carolina buckthorn (Frangula caroliniana (Walter) A. Gray), porcelain berry (Ampelopsis glandulosa var. brevipedunculata (Maxim.) Momiy), amur honeysuckle (Lonicera maackii (Rupr.) Herder); autumn olive (Elaeagnus spp.); elderberry (Sambucus spp.); mulberry (Morus spp.); native honeysuckle (Lonicera spp.); and Carolina moonseed (Cocculus carolinus (L.) DC.). These SWD hosts ripened from early June into October. Tunnels with insect exclusion netting excluded SWD fly entry and prevented fruit infestations in 2016 and delayed SWD infestations in 2017. For 2016 and 2017, the seasonal total number of hours of SWD lethal temperatures inside the tunnel treatments (netted high tunnel = 69.4, 50.8, plastic low tunnel = 58.6, 68.0 and netted low tunnel = 54.6, 41.7) were slightly warmer than in the uncovered plot (53.4, 32.6). Low percentages of relative humidity (

The SWD is a vinegar fly of East Asian origin that can cause damage to many fruit crops. I develop a dynamic structural model to study the SWD management decisions of growers of Michigan high-bush blueberry regarding fly and larva monitoring and insecticide application. I apply my dynamic structural econometric model to a detailed data set I have collected and constructed of daily decisions of blueberry growers in Michigan.

Book excerpt: Parasitoids lay their eggs on or in the bodies of other species of insect, and the parasitoid larvae develop by feeding on the host, causing its eventual death. Known for a long time to applied biologists for their importance in regulating the population densities of economic pests, parasitoids have recently proven to be valuable tools in testing many aspects of evolutionary theory. This book synthesizes the work of both schools of parasitoid biology and asks how a consideration of evolutionary biology can help us understand the behavior, ecology, and diversity of the approximately one to two million species of parasitoid found on earth. After a general introduction to parasitoid natural history and taxonomy, the first part of the book treats the different components of the reproductive strategy of parasitoids: searching for a host, host selection, clutch size, and the sex ratio. Subsequent chapters discuss pathogens and non-Mendelian genetic elements that affect sexual reproduction; evolutionary aspects of the physiological interactions between parasitoid and host; mating strategies; life history theory and community ecology. A special effort is made to discuss the theoretical background to the subject, but without the use of mathematics.

Book excerpt: Anyone wishing to tap the research potential of the hundreds of Drosophila species in addition to D.melanogaster will finally have a single comprehensive resource for identifying, rearing and using this diverse group of insects. This is the only group of higher eukaryotes for which the genomes of 12 species have been sequenced. The fruitfly Drosophila melanogaster continues to be one of the greatest sources of information regarding the principles of heredity that apply to all animals, including humans. In reality, however, over a thousand different species of Drosophila exist, each with the potential to make their own unique contributions to the rapidly changing fields of genetics and evolution. This book, by providing basic information on how to identify and breed these other fruitflies, will allow investigators to take advantage, on a large scale, of the valuable qualities of these other Drosophila species and their newly developed genomic resources to address critical scientific questions.* Provides easy to use keys and illustrations to identify different Drosophila species* A guide to the life history differences of hundreds of species* Worldwide distribution maps of hundreds of species* Complete recipes for different Drosophila diets* Offers an analysis on how to account for species differences in designing and conducting experiments* Presents useful ideas of how to collect the many different Drosophila species in the wild

Book excerpt: Concerns about global biodiversity are rising dramatically, yet we are lagging behind in the most basic prerequisite for its understanding and conservation: the inventory. Insect species may make up five or ten times the number of all other plant and animal species combined, and as such they represent one of the major challenges in biosystematic science. World Catalogue of Insects is an initiative aiming at compiling worldscale, authoritative catalogues of monophyletic insect taxa. Volumes in this series contain standard nomenclatoral information on all names pertaining to the taxon treated, including type locality and distribution to the extent this is relevant. Additional information is optional, e.g., location, status and condition of types; biology; bibliographical information; pest status; vector status; etc. This volume nine focuses on Drosophilidae (Diptera). This book was released on 2018 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drosophila suzukii (Matsumura) is an invasive frugivorous fly native to Eastern and Southeastern Asia introduced to North America in 2008. Drosophila suzukii has rapidly expanded its range and is now found in Europe, the Americas, and Asia. The capability of D. suzukii to attack intact ripening fruit, a unique trait among drosophilids, makes it a formidable economic threat to fruit crop production regions, including the sweet cherry industry in the United States. Adult flies oviposit into the skin of fruit and larvae consequently damage fruit by feeding internally, rendering it unmarketable. Pest management tactics for fruit crops within D. suzukii's host range are dominated by chemically intensive prophylactic control methods to mitigate damage for which there is nearly zero tolerance. Since its arrival to present, research has been aimed at developing management strategies that are less chemical-dependent, including cultural and mechanical approaches. Within the trapping and monitoring framework of integrated pest management (IPM), commercial lures, baits and traps were tested in commercial orchards to evaluate their efficacy in selectivity and performance. I evaluated the potential for attracticides to be added to the IPM toolbox, a more selective method of chemical control. In a chemical-intensive management system, residues of insecticides currently in use were tested for residual control and route of exposure differences. Lastly, attraction behavior modulation by yeast species Hanseniaspora uvarum (Niehaus) was characterized for effects on flight and copulation of D. suzukii. These findings show that D. suzukii behavior is influenced by H. uvarum, which provide background information for further behavioral studies. Components of this dissertation add to the current literature of this relatively new invasive pest.
