Book excerpt: This textbook introduces logistics from a broad perspective to include all activities throughout the product and service life cycle pertaining to supply chain and logistics management, the physical supply and distribution of products, and the corresponding maintenance and support. It recognizes the mutual interdependence of the major functional areas of the organization including marketing, production, and finance. The emphasis throughout the text is on logistics in the context of a total business system design process. It views the business as a "system", managing logistics within that system, and thus transforming their Supply Chain. Pedagogy to aid learning is incorporated throughout every chapter, with chapter objectives, case studies, and concept checks. This text is intended for both upper-level undergraduate and lower-level graduate students in both Business and Engineering on logistics and supply chain tracks. It can also serve as a reference for practitioners actively engaged in day-to-day management of logistics and supply chain activities. Supplementary online resources include an instructors’ manual, chapter-by-chapter PowerPoint slides, glossary, and a test bank of exam questions.

Book excerpt: Within the context of Industrial 4.0 and beyond, developing and managing the technologies and operations key to sustaining the success of manufacturing businesses is crucial, and the promotion of manufacturing-engineering education, training, and research is of vital importance. This book presents the proceedings of ICMR 2022, the 19th International Conference in Manufacturing Research, Incorporating the 36th National Conference in Manufacturing Research, held in Derby, UK, from 6 - 8 September 2022. For over two decades, ICMR has been the main manufacturing research conference held in the UK. Bringing together researchers, academics, and industrialists to share their knowledge and experience, the conference provides a friendly and inclusive platform for a broad community of researchers who share the common goal of making digital and advanced manufacturing as efficient and effective as possible. The theme of ICMR2022 is smart manufacturing. Of the 78 papers submitted, 58 were accepted for presentation after review and are included here. This represents an acceptance rate of 72%. The book is divided into 8 sections: smart manufacturing; digital manufacturing; additive manufacturing; robotics and industrial automation; composite manufacturing and machining processes; product design, development and quality management; information and knowledge management; and decision support and production optimization. Exploring all core areas of digital and advanced manufacturing engineering, the book will be of interest to all those working in the field.

Book excerpt: A Perspective on Two Decades of Rapid Modeling It is an honor for me to be asked to write a foreword to the Proceedings of the 1st Rapid Modeling Conference. In 1987, when I coined the term “Rapid Modeling” to denote queuing modeling of manufacturing systems, I never imagined that two decades later there would be an international conference devoted to this topic! I am delighted to see that there will be around 40 presentations at the conference by leading researchers from aroundthe world, and about half of these presentationsare represented by written papers published in this book. I congratulate the conference organizers and program committee on the success of their efforts to hold the ?rst ever conference on Rapid Modeling. Attendees at this conferencemight?nd it interesting to learn about the history of the term Rapid Modeling in the context it is used here. During the fall of 1986 I was invited to a meeting at the Headquarters of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) in Dearborn, Michigan. By that time I had successfully demonstrated s- eral industry applications of queuing network models at leading manufacturers in the USA. Although in principle the use of queuing networks to model manufact- ing systems was well known in the OR/MS community and many papers had been published, the actual use of suchmodelsby manufacturingprofessionalswas almost nonexistent.

Culled from papers presented at a Library of Congress symposium in October 2000, The Strategic Stewardship of Cultural Resources: To Preserve and Protect examines the challenges you face in preserving and safeguarding your library's resources. Twenty-two leading library and archival professionals address critical issues on the preservation and security of collections in cultural property institutions, including libraries, museums, and archives. The book explores the connections between physical security and the preservation of our cultural heritage. The Strategic Stewardship of Cultural Resources identifies the risks involved in preserving cultural resources and presents effective strategies for security. The book guides you through the process of evaluating preservation and security programs, budgeting costs, determining the right amount of facilities security, meeting the challenge of preserving digital information, and coping with the negative effects of theft and vandalism. The Strategic Stewardship of Cultural Resources focuses on four keys that are central to safeguarding your heritage assets: physical security—protection from theft, mutilation, damage by water, fire, etc., with strategies used by the Library of Congress and other major libraries preservation—protection from deterioration through conservation and reformatting, using examples from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Library of Congress, and other institutions bibliographic control—knowing what your library has inventory control—knowing where your collections are The Strategic Stewardship of Cultural Resources: To Preserve and Protect also examines the FBI's Art Theft Program, national and institutional requirements for preservation funding, and measuring the effect of environmental elements (temperature, humidity, etc.) on your collection. The book is an essential resource for library, archive, and museum directors, preservation officers, security professionals, curators, and archivists.

Book excerpt: Global supply chains are becoming more customer-centric and sustainable thanks to next-generation logistics management technologies. Automating logistics procedures greatly increases the productivity and efficiency of the workflow. There is a need, however, to create flexible and dynamic relationships among numerous stakeholders and the transparency and traceability of the supply chain. The digitalization of the supply chain process has improved these relationships and transparency; however, it has also created opportunities for cybercriminals to attack the logistics industry. Cybersecurity Measures for Logistics Industry Framework discusses the environment of the logistics industry in the context of new technologies and cybersecurity measures. Covering topics such as AI applications, inventory management, and sustainable computing, this premier reference source is an excellent resource for business leaders, IT managers, security experts, students and educators of higher education, librarians, researchers, and academicians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about financial accounting and management control and how these two information systems are related as well as how their objectives conflict. At the most fundamental level, the objective of financial accounting is to provide owners and funders with comparable information on a company's value creation. The aim of management control, on the other hand, is to give the board, senior executives and employees unique information for strategy formulation and implementation. One often-mentioned negative effect is the risk of financial accounting affecting management control design and use, making it less relevant for decision-making at the company level. The book provides an analysis of the complex relationship between financial accounting and management control. The analysis is based on theoretical reasoning as well as several examples of how financial accounting standards affect not only the annual report but also the control system. An interesting, and perhaps unexpected conclusion is that management control seems to affect financial accounting almost as much as financial accounting affects management control. These complex relationships, which can influence the design and use of both financial accounting and management control, are discussed in detail in this book.
