Book excerpt: Since the establishment of the CAAD futures Foundation in 1985 CAAD experts from all over the world meet every two years to present and at the same time document the state of art of research in Computer Aided Architectural Design. The history of CAAD futures started in the Netherlands at the Technical Universities of Eindhoven and Delft, where the CAAD futures Foundation came into being. Then CAAD futures crossed the oceans for the first time, the third CAAD futures in 1989 was held at Harvard University. Next stations in the evolution were in 1991 Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, the ETC, Zürich. In 1993 the conference was organized by Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh and in 1995 by National University, Singapore, CAAD futures 1995 marked the world wide nature by organizing it for the first time in Asia. Proceedings of CAAD futures held biannually provide a complete review of the state of research in Computer Aided Architectural Design.

Book excerpt: Since the establishment of the CAAD Futures Foundation in 1985, CAAD experts from all over the world meet every two years to present and document the state of the art of research in Computer Aided Architectural Design. Together, the series provides a good record of the evolving state of research in this area over the last fourteen years. The Proceedings this year is the eighth in the series. The conference held at Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia, includes twenty-five papers presenting new and exciting results and capabilities in areas such as computer graphics, building modeling, digital sketching and drawing systems, Web-based collaboration and information exchange. An overall reading shows that computers in architecture is still a young field, with many exciting results emerging out of both greater understanding of the human processes and information processing needed to support design and also the continuously expanding capabilities of digital technology.

Book excerpt: Manufacturing and service industries have significantly improved their levels of productivity, quality, and profitability over the past 30 years, whereas in the construction industry similar levels of improvement have been impossible to achieve. Numerous reports have identified fragmentation of the industry’s management structures and processes as the underlying cause of the waste and inefficiencies that keep costs high and margins low. Integrated Design and Construction is an integrated yet competitive form of procurement, design and project delivery based on the principle of purchasing any other high value warranted manufactured product. Such an approach would make the construction process more like other manufacturing industries, allowing contractors to make similar improvements to those already seen in other manufacturing industries. Designed for use by experienced construction professionals, familiar and proficient with traditional design and construction system best practice, this Code of Practice provides both client and constructor with the necessary information to adopt this approach to create well-designed and well-constructed products, fully meeting client needs.

Book excerpt: This book focuses on the intelligent application of advanced information technology tools (such as CAD and KBES) to design and planning in construction. It describes and explains the current applications of computer tools, presents new ideas for their use in design and planning processes, and in particular, concentrates on the preliminary design stage. Computer Integrated Planning and Design for Construction aims to demonstrate the implementation of these ideas and uncover the extraordinary opportunities for design improvement as a result.

Book excerpt: CAD84: 6th International Conference and Exhibition on Computers in Design Engineering is a collection of 64 conference papers that covers a wide range of topics on computer-aided design (CAD) and CADCAM, including CAD process plant designs, techniques, drafting systems, electronics, geometric design, kinematics, mechanical engineering, solid modelling, and structures. The book starts by describing the progress that has been made in hardware and software. The text continues by presenting papers about interactive system for the design and production of computer programs; an algorithmic language for the definition and manipulation of drawings; and a software tool to enable application dialog input to be developed for new or existing programs with or without problem-oriented language. Papers on the design of a drawing system that consists of a language kernel for tailoring the system to support various styles and practices and on an automated drawing and cost estimation program for platform frame construction named HOUSE24 are also presented. The book also discusses HILO-2, which is a single coherent system for design verification, fault simulation, and test vector generation. The text will benefit both students and professionals using CAD.

Book excerpt: MARTENS Bob and BROWN Andre Co-conference Chairs, CAAD Futures 2005 Computer Aided Architectural Design is a particularly dynamic field that is developing through the actions of architects, software developers, researchers, technologists, users, and society alike. CAAD tools in the architectural office are no longer prominent outsiders, but have become ubiquitous tools for all professionals in the design disciplines. At the same time, techniques and tools from other fields and uses, are entering the field of architectural design. This is exemplified by the tendency to speak of Information and Communication Technology as a field in which CAAD is embedded. Exciting new combinations are possible for those, who are firmly grounded in an understanding of architectural design and who have a clear vision of the potential use of ICT. CAAD Futures 2005 called for innovative and original papers in the field of Computer Aided Architectural Design, that present rigorous, high-quality research and development work. Papers should point towards the future, but be based on a thorough understanding of the past and present.
