Book excerpt: Incident-neutron-energy-dependent measurements of scattered neutrons and secondary gamma rays for small samples of Be, C, N, H2O, and Fe have been performed at four scattering angles (30, 55, 90 and 125 degrees). The pulsed-white-neutron source, time-of-flight (TOF) method, and NE-213 detector with pulse-shape discrimination, three-parameter data acquisition with an online computer and spectrum unfolding were used to measure incident-neutron-energy-dependent, count rates and energy spectra of scattered neutrons (E sub n> 1 MeV) and secondary gamma rays (E sub gamma> 1 MeV) for incident neutron energies from 2 to 20 MeV. The measurements provide high sensitivity tests for integral and differential neutron scattering and gamma-ray production cross sections when compared with appropriate transport calculations. Differences between measurements and calculations should be interpretable in terms of specific cross-section deficiencies at well-defined incident-neutron energies from 2 to 20 MeV. The source spectrum of neutrons incident on the samples was measured by TOF using the NE-213 detector. (Author).

Book excerpt: Neutron Cross Sections, Volume 1: Neutron Resonance Parameters and Thermal Cross Sections, Part A represents the fourth edition of what was previously known as BNL-325, Neutron Cross Sections, Volume 1. This three-chapter book provides the extensive list of detailed individual resonance parameters for each isotope. The first chapter deals with the thermal cross sections and average resonance parameters, as well as the physics of thermal and resonance neutrons, with particular emphasis on evaluation methods. This chapter also includes tables of standards of capture cross sections and scattering lengths, and commonly used nuclear physics formulas. The second chapter covers the direct or valence capture and the Brink-Axel treatment of electric dipole radiation. These topics are followed by a discussion on spin-dependent scattering lengths that are of interest to solid state. The third chapter describes the Maxwellian 30-keV capture cross sections that are of importance to studies of nucleosynthesis and age of the universe. This chapter also examines the s- and p-wave average radiative widths and gamma-ray strength functions that are required in capture cross section measurements. This book will appeal to nuclear and astrophysicists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An integral experiment, designed to provide high-sensitivity tests for gamma-ray production and neutron-scattering cross sections, has been performed. The experiment is based on the white-source, pulsed-neutron, time-of-flight method with the sample at the detector end of the flight path. Measurements were made with a single 5 x 5 cm cylindrical NE-213 detector positioned at 30, 55, 90, and 125 degrees relative to the incident neutron beam. Pulse-shape discrimination was used to separate neutron and gamma-ray counts. Measured count rates due to secondary gamma rays and scattered neutrons from two sample materials, graphite and liquid nitrogen, are reported here as functions of time and incident neutron energy. Differences between calculated gamma-ray and neutron count rates and those reported here should be readily interpreted in terms of specific cross-section deficiencies at well defined incident neutron energies in the 1.5- to 20-MeV range. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gamma-ray cross section standards for neutron-induced reactions are important in enabling the accurate determination of absolute cross sections from relative measurements of gamma-ray production. In our work we observed a need for improvement in these standards. In particular there are large discrepancies between evaluations of the {sup nat}Fe(n, n1'[gamma]) cross section for the 847-keV gamma ray. We have performed (1) absolute cross section measurements, (2) measurements relative to the {sup nat}Cr(n, n1'[gamma]) 1434-keV gamma ray, and (3) comparisons using measured total and elastic scattering cross sections to refine our knowledge of the Fe cross section and the closely linked inelastic channel cross section for Fe. Calculation of integral tests of the cross section libraries may indicate that adjustment of the angular distributions of the neutron elastic and inelastic scattering may be needed.
