Book excerpt: A shear-work integral method is developed for calculating compressible turbulent boundary layers on planar or axisymmetric bodies. This method differs from other integral techniques primarily in the velocity profile and the velocity-temperature relation used. The velocity profile is an analytical expression that depends on the local values of skin friction, shape factor, and Reynolds number based on momentum thickness, thus no new parameters not already occurring in the integral equations are introduced. The velocity- temperature relation is also an analytical expression that describes the total- temperature overshoot near the outer edge of turbulent adiabatic wall boundary layers with nonunity Prandtl number and recovery factor. The method is fast, easy to use, and shown to provide good agreement with experimental data. The resulting computer code is relatively small. A computer program listing that is applicable to the calculation of impermeable, adiabatic wall, turbulent boundary layers for Mach numbers up to three is included.

Book excerpt: Twenty-one years have passed since the first symposium in this series was held in Paris (1976). Since then there have been meetings in Lausanne (1980), Cambridge (1984), Aachen (1987), Beijing (1989), Notre Dame (1991) and Fukuoka (1994). During this period a tremendous development in the field of unsteady aerodynamics and aeroelasticity in turbomachines has taken place. As steady-state flow conditions become better known, and as blades in the turbomachine are constantly pushed towards lower weight, and higher load and efficiency, the importance of unsteady phenomena appear more clearly. th The 8 Symposium was, as the previous ones, of high quality. Furthermore, it presented the audience with the latest developments in experimental, numerical and theoretical research. More papers than ever before were submitted to the conference. As the organising committee wanted to preserve the uniqueness of the symposium by having single sessions, and thus mingle speakers and audience with different backgrounds in this interdisciplinary field, only a limited number of papers could be accepted. 54 papers were accepted and presented at the meeting, all of which are included in the present proceedings.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between 1986 and 1990, a large database was compiled at AEDC from the results of a series of wind tunnel experiments investigating the aerodynamics of flow over open cavities. The database, known as the Weapons Internal Carriage and Separation (WICS) database, covered four experiments that were completed in the AEDC wind tunnels. The initial database documentation focused on the test and data, but included very little analysis of the results. The purpose of the present work is to report analysis of the cavity acoustics and trajectory data. In addition, an updated engineering mathematical model for cavity aeroacoustics is presented.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A mathematical model was assembled from fundamental fluid dynamic relations and turbulent single-stream mixing zone relations to predict spectra, i.e., the frequency and amplitude, of unsteady pressures acting in a rectangular cavity exposed to an external flow parallel to the cavity opening. Characteristics of the approaching boundary layer are expected as inputs, thereby allowing computation of spectra for cases of mass-injection upstream of the cavity. The equations were compiled as a code (CAP) that can be run in less than 15 sec on a personal computer. Maximum dynamic loads acting on the contents of the cavity can be estimated, in addition to the primary frequencies of oscillation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written to teach students the nature of transonic flow and its mathematical foundation, this book offers a much-needed introduction to transonic aerodynamics. The authors present a quantitative and qualitative assessment of subsonic, supersonic and transonic flow around bodies in two and three dimensions. The book reviews the governing equations and explores their applications and limitations as employed in modeling and computational fluid dynamics. Some concepts, such as shock and expansion theory, are examined from a numerical perspective. Others, including shock-boundary-layer interaction, are discussed from a qualitative point of view. The book includes 60 examples and more than 200 practice problems. The authors also offer analytical methods such as Method of Characteristics (MOC) that allow readers to practice with the subject matter. The result is a wealth of insight into transonic flow phenomena and their impact on aircraft design, including compressibility effects, shock and expansion waves, shock-boundary-layer interaction and aeroelasticity.

Book excerpt: This handbook provides both a comprehensive overview and deep insights on the state-of-the-art methods used in wind turbine aerodynamics, as well as their advantages and limits. The focus of this work is specifically on wind turbines, where the aerodynamics are different from that of other fields due to the turbulent wind fields they face and the resultant differences in structural requirements. It gives a complete picture of research in the field, taking into account the different approaches which are applied. This book would be useful to professionals, academics, researchers and students working in the field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume entitled "Recent Contributions to Fluid Mechanics" is dedicated to Professor Dr.-Ing. Alfred Walz in honour of his 75th birthday. Alfred Walz, born on 11 May 1907, began his outstanding career as an electrical engineer. A few years after obtaining his university degree he became extremely engaged in fluid dynamics. Walking in the footsteps of Prandtl he was able to direct the development of theoretical activities in an inimitable way. He had the great opportunity to work both as an engaged fluid dynamicist -always trying to get to the bottom of things -and as a popular and patient teacher. To all of these things - in his own words - he gave his heart. Consequently, it is a great pleasure to publish the following 34 contributions summarizing the efforts of 56 authors. These artic les in total cover the wide range of experimental as well as theore tical fluid dynamics and reflect the present state of the art. Moreover, all colleagues and friends of Alfred Walz wish that he may be able to continue his work and his influence on the work of all of us via his enlightening ideas. This book was released on 1983 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A method is presented for computing three-dimensional, time-dependent, compressible, turbulent boundary layers in nonorthogonal curvilinear coordinates. An integral method is employed in the interest of computational speed and because the three-dimensional method is an extension of an existing two-dimensional method. After presenting a detailed derivation of the integral form of the boundary-layer equations, the necessary auxiliary relations are given along with the relationships between integral lengths expressed in streamline and nonorthogonal coordinates. A time dependent approach is used to account for time accuracy (if desired) and to provide a method that is compatible with the surface grid used by an inviscid solver for use in viscous-inviscid interaction calculations. The equations are solved using a Runge-Kutta scheme with local time stepping to accelerate convergence. Stability and convergence of the numerical scheme are examined for various space differences compared with measurements and with computations of previous investigators.

This book was released on 1981 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Embedded-wire skin-friction gages were tested in the Acoustic Research Tunnel (ART) and on a model in Tunnel 16T at AEDC. The range of Mach numbers and Reynolds numbers considered was typical of the conditions encountered in transonic wind tunnel testing. Data obtained by the embedded-wire technique agreed well with data from conventional methods of measuring skin friction when the gages were calibrated in situ. When the gages were calibrated and reinstalled at a later date, the calibration coefficients could not be corrected by simple techniques. (Author).
