Book Synopsis Architecture in Indianapolis by : James A. Glass
Download or read book Architecture in Indianapolis written by James A. Glass and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2024-10-15 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a planned community, Indianapolis boasted finished frame and brick buildings from its beginning. Architects and builders drew on Federal, Greek Revival, Italianate, French Second Empire, Gothic, Romanesque, and Italian Renaissance styles for commercial, industrial, public, and religious buildings and for residences. In Architecture in Indianapolis: 1820–1900, preservationist and architectural historian Dr. James Glass explores the rich variety of architecture that appeared during the city's first 80 years, to 1900. Glass explains how economic forces shaped building cycles, such as the Canal Era, the advent of railroads, the natural gas boom, and repeated recessions and recoveries. He describes 243 buildings that illustrate the styles that architects and builders incorporated into the designs that they devised in each era between 1820 and 1900. This book also documents the loss of distinctive 19th century architecture that has occurred in Indianapolis. It includes 373 photographs and drawings that depict the buildings described and locator maps that show where concentrations of buildings were constructed. Architecture in Indianapolis: 1820–1900 provides the first history of 19th-century architecture in the city and will serve as an indispensable reference for decades to come.

Book Synopsis Capital, Accumulation, and Money by : L.D. Taylor
Download or read book Capital, Accumulation, and Money written by L.D. Taylor and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Capital, Accumulation, and Money: An Integration of Capital, Growth, and Monetary Theory is a book about capital. A root concept of capital is developed which allows for most existing concepts of capital to be unified and related to one another in consistent fashion. Such a root concept of capital offers a framework for integrating monetary and capital theory, and for analyzing the functioning of an economy, whether that economy is in a steady state of subsistence or in a process of sustainable growth. Specifically, it is shown that a conservation principle emerges that both implies and imposes a variety of constraints on the macro behavior of an economy, constraints which make for straightforward understanding and analysis of such concepts as the real stock of money, real-balance effects, and the general price level. New and illuminating insights are also provided into aggregate supply and demand, natural and money rates of interest, the relationship between real and monetary economies, and economic growth and development.

Book Synopsis Collective Bargaining in the Private Sector by : Paul F. Clark
Download or read book Collective Bargaining in the Private Sector written by Paul F. Clark and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Private-sector collective bargaining in the United States is under siege. Many factors have contributed to this situation, including the development of global markets, a continuing antipathy toward unions by managers, and the declining effectiveness of strikes. This volume examines collective bargaining in eight major industries--airlines, automobile manufacturing, health care, hotels and casinos, newspaper publishing, professional sports, telecommunications, and trucking--to gain insight into the challenges the parties face and how they have responded to those challenges. The authors suggest that collective bargaining is evolving differently across the industries studied. While the forces constraining bargaining have not abated, changes in the global environment, including new security considerations, may create opportunities for unions. Across the industries, one thing is clear--private-sector collective bargaining is rapidly changing.

Book Synopsis Women's Welfare, Women's Rights by : Jane Lewis
Download or read book Women's Welfare, Women's Rights written by Jane Lewis and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-05-01 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There are a number of ways of approaching the study of social policy, the most common is perhaps the division by ‘service’. A different approach is by ‘group’. Another is first to isolate a concept – for example, social justice or equality – and then to relate it both to policies in a particular area and to particular groups. Originally published in 1983, Women's Welfare, Women's Rights opted explicitly for an amalgam of these strategies. The primary focus of this title is women as a group and most of the contributors, who work from a wide variety of disciplinary perspectives, take a particular policy area and try to see what is happening to women within it, concentrating chiefly on women’s experience in the family and in paid employment. At the time opportunities for reading about women and social policy were limited so this book was intended to be helpful in redressing the balance. Today it can be read in its historical context.
