Book excerpt: Excerpt from Directions for Collecting and Preserving Insects The former work, prepared in 1892 under the direction Of the late Dr. C. V. Riley, served a most valuable purpose in showing beginners the best methods of collecting and preserving insects. During the years that have passed since its preparation many new methods have been devised and studies conducted on entirely new lines. Therefore it has been considered necessary to prepare an entirely new paper. Many notes on methods Of preparation Of material have been culled from the pages Of the entomological journals, and several members Of the Bureau Of Entomology have furnished items of value in their Special lines. Book excerpt: Excerpt from How to Collect and Preserve Insects The making of such a collection may have educational and recrea tional as well as scientific values. Developing this hobby is one of the finest ways for students, especially those in agricultural districts, to become acquainted with the large number of injurious and beneficial insects that they encounter about the home and in the fields. High school classes in biology find excellent laboratory material in the many insects available for rearing and study. Both old and young collectors find a great deal of pleasure in working with the showy and beautiful insects, such as beetles, moths, and butterflies; the satisfaction derived comes both from having relaxation from the day's work and from making real contributions to scientific knowledge. Many entomological museums welcome the opportunity to examine carefully prepared and labeled collections. These collections supply distribution records for insect species, in addition to other information of value to tech nical entomologists. Also, the amateur collector profits from his contact with specialists who can help him identify his specimens and advise him at any stage of his work. It is hoped that this circular will Show how easy it is to make a start in insect collecting and will give the student helpful ideas on how and where to begin. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Natural History of the British Lepidoptera, Vol. 1: A Text-Book for Students and Collectors Although essentially a work on British Lepidoptera, it is trusted that it will have an interest for other than purely British lepidopterists. The chapters on each superfamily cover the whole fauna included in the superfamily, and should, therefore, be of use generally to students of these superfamilies. The distribution of each species, too, outside the British Isles, is considered separately from the recorded localities within the limits of our own country, and should be useful to students of geographical distribution in all parts of the world. The author is fully aware that in a book containing so much detail, there must necessarily be many sins of commission and omission. He can only hope that these are not serious, and assure his readers that he has taken the greatest care to eliminate them. The trouble to which the author has been put, and the hours of comparatively waste time that he has spent, in compiling the lists of localities, synonymic tables, distribution, etc., and in unearthing recordsof the rarer varieties and aberrations, owing to the incomplete and imperfect indexes of entomological magazines in general and works on Lepidoptera in particular, have led him to index every reference to super families, families, genera, species, varieties, etc., mentioned in the book. It is trusted that this will be found of great time-saving value to all who have need to refer to the volume. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notes on the Lepidoptera of America Male and Female. Upperside, much the same as in Grapta faunus, Edwards; the preapical oblique dark brown costal band of the primaries is constantly more diffuse, and the succeeding yellowish marks more restricted, than in its congener. Usually there is a third fainter black spot on the interspace above first median nervule. On the secondaries, the terminal dark band is narrower than in G. faunus, and the sub-terminal, interspaceal, yellow-fulvous marks, while deeper in color, are brought nearer to the external margin; within these, the dark color is less intense and shades more rapidly to brownish, than in its congener. All the exserted portions of the external margins on both wings are narrower; this is especially perceivable when comparing the "tails" of the secondaries of the two species together. Underside, paler than in G. faunus, and affords ready distinguishing characters. Basally, the wings are of a rich dark clear brown, marbled with paler shadings nearer the body, and with darker lines inclosing brown elongated patches. Outside of the brown space is a broad whitish band, distinctly covered with fine, short, wavy, transverse, disconnected, brown striae, and shading into the dark wood-brown strigose terminal shade. The discal mark of the secondaries is a white L, entirely surrounded by the dark brown scales of the basal shade. Body and legs much as in G. faunus; tarsi, whitish, paler; antennae notably shorter than in its ally. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Catalogue of the Lepidoptera the in the British Museum Collection of the British Museum The present volume, which is supplementary to Vol. III. of Lepidoptera Phalaenae, was in manuscript at the beginning of 1915, and the text-figures and most of the Plates had been prepared; but, owing to the European War, it was decided to postpone its publication. It has now been completed and brought up to date as far a 3 possible. For the reason just mentioned, however, no references will be found in it to German publications which have appeared since August 1914. The Arctiidae in Vol. III. included 147 genera and 845 species, and to these are added in the present volume 25 genera and 1215 species. The Agaristidae, for which the name Phalaenoididae is substituted, included 53 genera and 225 species, and these numbers are now increased by 7 genera and 80 species. The term "subspecies" is occasionally made use of in this volume simply to denote that our present knowledge of the form referred to is insufficient to determine whether it is a species or an aberrational variety. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Entomologist's Companion: Being a Guide to the Collection of Micro-Lepidoptera, and Comprising a Calendar of the British Tineidæ The object of this little volume IS to supply rudimentary informa tion to the incipient Entomologist, by instructing him when and where to look for insects; and when seen, how to catch them. For want of distinct instruction 011 these matters, a young Entomologist frequently wastes a great deal of time, which might otherwise have been employed with great advantage to science. Of course different orders of insects, having different habits, are to be sought in different ways and at different times. To give full instruction therefore in the when, where and how to catch all orders of insects, an accurate acquaintance with the habits of all orders of insects would be necessary. I have therefore confined myself in the following pages to an account of the modes of cap ture, localities frequented and times of appearance of the M1030 lepidoptera* inhabiting these islands. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Natural History of the British Lepidoptera, Vol. 5: A d104-Book for Students and Collectors For the two general chapters with which this volume opens, we have chosen the subjects of Hybridisation and Mongrelisation in lepidoptera. These subjects have so close a bearing on the question 1of Species that we make no excuse for bringing forward, into an easily accessible form, the greater part of the matter already published on these subjects. The wide interest now being taken in the broad principles of variation, fixation of forms, species-development, heredity, etc., is enough to make chapters of this kind of more than passing interest, and to give them considerable value in the eyes of the biologist, as well as the lepidopterist, pure and simple. We do not claim to have exhausted the recorded accounts, but we have obtained all that were known and available to us at the time they were written and printed (now so long ago as October, In order to include some more recently recorded facts we have added an Addendum to our earlier chapter on Hybridisation.
