Book Synopsis Phraseology in Legal and Institutional Settings by : Stanislaw Goźdź-Roszkowski
Download or read book Phraseology in Legal and Institutional Settings written by Stanislaw Goźdź-Roszkowski and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-08-07 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of major developments in the study of how phraseology is used in a wide range of different legal and institutional contexts. This recent interest has been mainly sparked by the development of corpus linguistics research, which has both demonstrated the centrality of phraseological patterns in language and provided researchers with new and powerful analytical tools. However, there have been relatively few empirical studies of word combinations in the domain of law and in the many different contexts where legal discourse is used. This book seeks to address this gap by presenting some of the latest developments in the study of this linguistic phenomenon from corpus-based and interdisciplinary perspectives. The volume draws on current research in legal phraseology from a variety of perspectives: translation, comparative/contrastive studies, terminology, lexicography, discourse analysis and forensic linguistics. It contains contributions from leading experts in the field, focusing on a wide range of issues amply illustrated through in-depth corpus-informed analyses and case studies. Most contributions to this book are multilingual, featuring different legal systems and legal languages. The volume will be a valuable resource for linguists interested in phraseology as well as lawyers and legal scholars, translators, lexicographers, terminologists and students who wish to pursue research in the area.

Book excerpt: Three approaches to analyzing institutional talk are introduced by internationally-recognized experts: Conversation Analysis, Discursive Psychology and Critical Discourse Analysis. The main section of the book ("Applications") illustrates these approaches by taking the reader through the process of analysis in such instances as how pilots talk in aircraft cockpits, how computer helpdesks work and how political speeches are constructed. Finally, the book opens up some theoretical and methodological controversies that occupy practitioners today. In this way, readers are introduced to the most recent ways of seeing how talk is critical to making the modern world work.
Download or read book Talk at Work written by Paul Drew and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first collection of its kind, Paul Drew and John Heritage bring together the latest advances in the application of conversation analysis to the study of language and interaction in institutional settings. Leading American and European scholars contribute to Talk at Work original empirical research into the interactions between professionals and 'clients' in a wide variety of settings, including doctor-patient consultations, legal hearings, news interviews, visits by health visitors, psychiatric interviews, and calls to the emergency services. Taken together, their reports are an illuminating exploration of how key aspects of an organisations' work are managed through talk and of the distinctively asymmetric character of institutional discourse. The use of a method at the forefront of research, on recordings of naturally occurring interactions in the settings under scrutiny, uncovers the relationships between social contexts and social actions and offers invaluable insight into the traditional concerns of the sociology and ethnography of organisations, sociolinguistics and pragmatics.

Book Synopsis Interactional Competences in Institutional Settings by : Simona Pekarek Doehler
Download or read book Interactional Competences in Institutional Settings written by Simona Pekarek Doehler and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-04-17 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This interdisciplinary volume brings together leading scholars from several disciplines to uncover the key to young people’s socialization within institutional settings, from school to the workplace. Among the questions they consider are: what aspects of interactional competence are relevant for participation in practical activities within those settings? What are the interactional procedures through which diverse facets of interactional competence are recognized, legitimized and assessed in the course of practical activities? How do these procedures shape and reflect social institutions and people's understanding of them? The collection discusses interactional competences across a variety of institutional settings, and reflects on the institutional order by scrutinizing how such competences are interactionally treated within everyday institutional practices. The volume enriches an interdisciplinary understanding of fundamental concepts in the social sciences and will therefore be of interest to those working within linguistics, sociology, education, psychology of work, and speech therapy.

The book then turns to applications and introduces methodological guidance alongside expositions of emerging analytical applications of the “Grammar” that include presentations of current practice, as well as developing novel analytical opportunities that the analyst can apply or build upon for their application. This book is aimed at students, faculty, and practitioners of diverse disciplinary backgrounds with varying levels of understanding of institutional analysis and experience conducting it.
Book Synopsis The Use of English in Institutional and Business Settings by : Giuliana Garzone
Download or read book The Use of English in Institutional and Business Settings written by Giuliana Garzone and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2007 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the intercultural problems related to the widespread use of English in written and oral communication by native and non-native speakers in institutional and business settings. Each chapter looks at a different set of issues emerging from the confrontation of cultures across national, institutional and organizational discourse communities, taking an intercultural or cross-cultural approach. The focus is on workplace settings, both in institutional and business contexts (e.g. politics, public services, media, international corporate communication, advertising, business negotiations, etc.). The theme is all the more interesting today not only in consideration of the sheer magnitude of this phenomenon and its capillary spread, but above all on account of the pervasive penetration of English into professional and workplace contexts as a communication language also for local/internal communication. The complexity of intercultural communication as an object of research is reflected in the variety of the topics explored, the range of settings investigated, and the diversity of methodological approaches taken.

Book Synopsis Material Setting and Reform Experience in English Institutions for Fallen Women, 1838-1910 by : Susan Woodall
Download or read book Material Setting and Reform Experience in English Institutions for Fallen Women, 1838-1910 written by Susan Woodall and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-10-27 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tracing the history of four English case studies, this book explores how, from outward appearance to interior furnishings, the material worlds of reform institutions for ‘fallen’ women reflected their moral purpose and shaped the lived experience of their inmates. Variously known as asylums, refuges, magdalens, penitentiaries, Houses or Homes of Mercy, the goal of such institutions was the moral ‘rehabilitation’ of unmarried but sexually experienced ‘fallen’ women. Largely from the working-classes, such women – some of whom had been sex workers – were represented in contradictory terms. Morally tainted and a potential threat to respectable family life, they were also worthy of pity and in need of ‘saving’ from further sin. Fuelled by rising prostitution rates, from the early decades of the nineteenth century the number of moral reform institutions for ‘fallen’ women expanded across Britain and Ireland. Through a programme of laundry, sewing work and regular religious instruction, the period of institutionalisation and moral re-education of around two years was designed to bring about a change in behaviour, readying inmates for economic self-sufficiency and re-entry into society in respectable domestic service. To achieve their goal, institutional authorities deployed an array of ritual, material, religious and disciplinary tools, with mixed results.
Book Synopsis Discourse as Social Interaction by : Teun Adrianus van Dijk
Download or read book Discourse as Social Interaction written by Teun Adrianus van Dijk and published by SAGE. This book was released on 1997-02-01 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do people engage in and competently manage discourse and interaction with others? Whether in informal, everyday conversations or professional dialogues, people "do" things while they are speaking or writing. Focusing on the fundamental interactional, social, political and cultural functions of text and talk, this comprehensive volume shows that discourse is not merely form and meaning but also action. This social dimension of discourse is further highlighted by examining the role of social identity and group membership, such as those based on gender, 'race' and ethnicity: How do members of various groups typically speak among each other and how do they communicate with people of other groups or cultures? What is the role of discourse in the perpetuation of sexism or racism? Several chapters use critical discourse analysis to examine the reproduction of social power, dominance and inequality, and special attention is paid to political and corporate discourse. Other contributions show that the complex interplay of the forms, meanings, and actions of discourse both shape and are shaped by culture.

Book Synopsis Language, Communication, and Intergroup Relations by : Jake Harwood
Download or read book Language, Communication, and Intergroup Relations written by Jake Harwood and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-10-26 with total page 359 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Language, Communication, and Intergroup Relations presents the current state of knowledge at the intersection of language, communication, and intergroup relations, drawing on interdisciplinary work from the fields of communication, social psychology, and sociolinguistics. Building from that existing work, it presents a series of provocative and innovative new directions in this area. The work is organized around a series of five themes: • Language and Culture • Intergroup Communication • Intergenerational Relations • Interpersonal Accommodation • Institutional Accommodation. Within each theme, prominent scholars present reviews of the literature, which are followed by responses, reactions, and extensions from a multidisciplinary group of researchers. These responses often move beyond typical academic prose and engage with the material in novel ways, including graphical theoretical models, short personal reflections, and creative prose. It is essential reading for students and academics in the interdisciplinary fields of communication, language, and social psychology.
