Book Synopsis Transportation Infostructures by : John Diebold
Download or read book Transportation Infostructures written by John Diebold and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 1995-05-30 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, the first to result from the Diebold Institute Information-Based Infrastructure Project, explores the links between business and government in the development of intelligent transportation systems (ITS) technology. The work focuses on road and vehicular infrastructures, comparing those of the U.S., Europe, and Japan, and the roles that ITS can play in solving major current and anticipated future transportational problems. Special attention is given to environmental and economic concerns. The world's infrastructure requires refurbishing, but it especially requires rethinking. The computer has transformed business enterprises and now information technology can change our environment. This book explores the benefits and how to achieve them through the use of intelligent transportation systems (ITS). The implementation of ITS will potentially lead to individual drivers, fleet operators, and public transit users saving vast amounts of journey time and fuel, to a significant reduction in pollution and to improved road safety. The Japanese are ahead of the U.S. and Europe in the area of intelligent transportation systems, using position location devices, and electronic maps. Most look at this development as one that helps speed passenger cars, but this book details the economics which point to the technology being equally good for speeding trucks and easing the movement of freight. Traffic avoidance is only part of the problem although route guidance is helpful. Financing of projects in ITS is an important area for innovation and ITS could be a source of revenue to municipalities rather than an expense.

Download or read book Fatal Exit written by Thomas M. Kowalick and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2005-02-11 with total page 501 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: FATAL EXIT is the first and only book documenting the decades-long debate among the automotive industry, government regualtors, and safety and privacy advocates over what the public terms "automobile black boxes". The book briefly traces the history of the debate from 1974 to 2004, and then clearly presents opposing viewpoints for and against the widespread use of emerging Motor Vehicle Event Data Recorder (MVEDR) technology. The arguments are followed by proposals to proceed with developing and utilizing the technology in ways that are both effective and respectful of individual privacy. The reader of this book will be able to develop an informed opinion as to the usefulness of MVEDRs and thus contribute intelligently to the debate as the United States Congress considers legislation that mandates this technology. In the United States 220,935,000 registered owners of motor vehicles are becoming aware of black box technology through newspaper and magazine articles, and television news stories. Many understand that these boxes already exist in 40 million cars. Yet motorists still have many questions and concerns about widespread use of the technology. As the only book of its kind, written by an insider and expert on the subject, FATAL EXIT provides an invaluable resource for anyone interested in why these devices have caused such international controversy.

This book was released on 1994 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis report will be of special interest to maintenance, construction, and traffic engineers and others interested in the use of impact attenuation devices or crash cushions for highway operations. Information is provided on the performance and operational experience of 13 crash cushion devices in current use in the United States and Canada, including physical characteristics, test results, and guidelines for use. Both permanent and temporary devices are included. Crash cushions can provide a cost-effective method for reducing or alleviating motor vehicle related injuries or fatalities, which constitute a major societal cost. This report of the Transportation Research Board presents information on the physical and impact performance characteristics of 13 crash cushions in current use in North America. Information on performance evaluation guidelines, physical characteristics, performance characteristics, selection considerations, and the operational experience of individual designs for crash cushions is provided. The synthesis concludes with possible future trends for crash cushions and appendices containing the crash test requirements of NCHRP Report 350: Recommended Procedures for the Safety Performance Evaluation of Highway Features, a crash cushion glossary, and a bibliography.
Download or read book Urban Ecology written by John Marzluff and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-01-03 with total page 802 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Urban Ecology is a rapidly growing field of academic and practical significance. Urban ecologists have published several conference proceedings and regularly contribute to the ecological, architectural, planning, and geography literature. However, important papers in the field that set the foundation for the discipline and illustrate modern approaches from a variety of perspectives and regions of the world have not been collected in a single, accessible book. Foundations of Urban Ecology does this by reprinting important European and American publications, filling gaps in the published literature with a few, targeted original works, and translating key works originally published in German. This edited volume will provide students and professionals with a rich background in all facets of urban ecology. The editors emphasize the drivers, patterns, processes and effects of human settlement. The papers they synthesize provide readers with a broad understanding of the local and global aspects of settlement through traditional natural and social science lenses. This interdisciplinary vision gives the reader a comprehensive view of the urban ecosystem by introducing drivers, patterns, processes and effects of human settlements and the relationships between humans and other animals, plants, ecosystem processes, and abiotic conditions. The reader learns how human institutions, health, and preferences influence, and are influenced by, the others members of their shared urban ecosystem.
