Book excerpt: A problem confirmation study was performed at Castle AFB and included 21 potential contaninant sources sites identified in the Phase I Report as requiring field investigation. The potential source sites were grouped into 16 investigation sites including the area of a confirmed plume of TCE contamination in groundwater. The field investigations, conducted from October 1984 to April 1985 included installation of 27 new monitor wells and 11 shallow lysimeters, collection of sediment samples from surface soil, shallow borings, and drainage ditches, geophysical surveys of three sites, two rounds of surface and groundwater sampling and water level measurements, and pilot test operations on a Base production well. Analytes include volatile organic compounds, TOC, TOX, oil and grease, as well as phenols, nitrate, metals, pesticide and herbicides at selected sites. Of the sixteen sites investigated, twelve were recommended for further groundwater study, either through continued monitoring of existing wells, or through expansion of the monitoring network. The TCE plume in the shallow aquifer was delineated and recommended for immediate feasibility study; additional investigation to locate the source of the plume and to define its extent in off-Base areas and in an underlying aquifer have also been recommended. The bulk of data necessitated the results be bound in three volumes. Volumes 2, Volume 3, and Volume 4, Appendix A-1 contain Tables A.1-1, A.1-3, and A.1-5, respectively, which are a sequential listing of the reports contained in that volume by batch number and Tables A.1-2, A.1-4, and A.1-6, respectively, which are a sample log and cross-reference table. These tables serve as a sample log and cross-reference well numbers, OEHL numbers and the RAS work order numbers under which the results are located. Pages in Appendix A are numbered by the volume number followed by the page number of that volume. For example, Page 2 001 is the first chemistry data page of Volume 2.

Book excerpt: Three sites were investigated at Elelson AFB during the Phse II, Stage 2 field evaluation of the IRP. The sites were the sewage treatment plant spill ponds and treated effluent leaching ponds (Site 32) and two base landfills (Sites 2 and 1). A geophysical survey was performed in the vicinity of the sludge treatment plant to help define areas of high electromagnetic conductivity (i.e., potential contamination) and aid in the placement of monitor wells. Eight monitor wells were installed during Stage 2. Ground water samples from Stage 1 and Stage 2 wells were analyzed for purgeable lead, arsenic, cadmium, chromium, mercury and silver. Soil samples from the vicinity of one of the landfills (Site 1) were tested for the presence of pesticides. Trace quantities of purgeable halocarbons and petroleum hydrocarbons were detected in the wells from all three sites. Drinking water standards for total trihalomethanes were not exceeded for any of these samples. Arsenic and cadmium were detected in wells at concentrations were elevated in the vicinity of the sewage treatment plant. Only one well, in close proximity to the sewage sludge drying beds, was found to have nitrate, nitrite concentrations above the Primary Drinking Water Standard. A well downgradient from this site had nitrate, nitrite levels below the same standard. Soils at Site 1 contain trace quantities of DDE, DDD, and DDT. No pesticides were detected in groundwater from the monitor well at this site.

Book excerpt: The Clean Water Act (CWA) requires that wetlands be protected from degradation because of their important ecological functions including maintenance of high water quality and provision of fish and wildlife habitat. However, this protection generally does not encompass riparian areasâ€"the lands bordering rivers and lakesâ€"even though they often provide the same functions as wetlands. Growing recognition of the similarities in wetland and riparian area functioning and the differences in their legal protection led the NRC in 1999 to undertake a study of riparian areas, which has culminated in Riparian Areas: Functioning and Strategies for Management. The report is intended to heighten awareness of riparian areas commensurate with their ecological and societal values. The primary conclusion is that, because riparian areas perform a disproportionate number of biological and physical functions on a unit area basis, restoration of riparian functions along America's waterbodies should be a national goal.

While the concept of process-based restoration in riverscapes has been advocated for at least two decades, details and specific examples on how to implement it remain sparse. Here, we describe 'low-tech process-based restoration' as a practice of using simple, low unit-cost, structural additions (e.g. wood and beaver dams) to riverscapes to mimic functions and initiate specific processes. Hallmarks of this approach include: - An explicit focus on the processes that a low-tech restoration intervention is meant to promote.- A conscious effort to use cost-effective, low-tech treatments (e.g., hand-built, natural materials, non-engineered, short-term design life-spans) because of the need to efficiently scale-up application.- 'Letting the system do the work', which defers critical decision making to riverscapes and nature's ecosystem engineers.
