This turbine vane was instrumented with two types of heat flux gauges. The first was a thin film Upilex gauge design wrapped over the full airfoil surface, while the second consisted of Pyrex insert type gauges. Initial measurements showed significant discrepancies in the resultant Nusselt number from these two types of gauges. As the inlet Reynolds number was decreased, these discrepancies collapsed to single laminar level Nusselt number. This suggested a potential change in the flowfield for one of the gauge types. Interrogation of the vane surface metrology showed depressions in the epoxy filler between the Pyrex insert and the metal airfoil. After filling these depressions, the vane was reinstalled and identical tests repeated. This second test revealed a better comparison for two of the Pyrex insert gauges while minimal change resulted in two other gauges. Similar results were achieved for the range of Reynolds numbers tested in laminar, transitional, and turbulent regions for the airfoil. These results suggest that further installation effects may still be present in the Pyrex gauges. Such alterations in the flow field can lead to misleading results and costly errors when applying experimental rig data to turbine design.

Book excerpt: An experimental study was made to obtain quantitative information on heat transfer, flow, and pressure distribution in a branched duct test section that had several significant features of an internal cooling passage of a turbine blade. The objective of this study was to generate a set of experimental data that could be used for validation of computer codes that would be used to model internal cooling. Surface heat transfer coefficients and entrance flow conditions were measured at nominal entrance Reynolds numbers of 45 000, 335 000, and 726 000. Heat transfer data were obtained by using a steady-state technique in which an Inconel heater sheet is attached to the surface and coated with liquid crystals. Visual and quantitative flow-field data from particle image velocimetry measurements for a plane at midchannel height for a Reynolds number of 45 000 were also obtained. The flow was seeded with polystyrene particles and illuminated by a laser light sheet. Pressure distribution measurements were made both on the surface with discrete holes and in the flow field with a total pressure probe. The flow-field measurements yielded flow-field velocities at selected locations. A relatively new method, pressure sensitive paint, was also used to measure surface pressure distribution. The pressure paint data obtained at Reynolds numbers of 335 000 and 726 000 compared well with the more standard method of measuring pressures by using discrete holes.

Book excerpt: An experimental study was conducted in a simulated three vane linear cascade to determine the effects of surface roughness and film cooling on the heat transfer coefficient distribution in the region downstream of the first row of suction side coolant holes. Suction side film cooling was operated in the range 0 less than M less than 1.4. The showerhead was tested at M(sub sh) = 1.6. In addition to the completely smooth condition, simulated airfoil roughness was used upstream of the coolant holes, downstream of the coolant holes, and both upstream and downstream of the coolant holes. Two levels of mainstream turbulence intensity were tested. The heat transfer measurements were conducted by application of a uniform heat flux in the region downstream of the coolant holes. The resulting surface temperature distributions were measured with infrared thermography. Because the upstream region was unheated, the influence of film cooling on the heat transfer coefficient was due to only to hydrodynamic effects and not thermal effects. The coolant to mainstream density ratio of the majority of the experiments was unity; however, a single experiment was conducted at a density ratio of DR = 1.6 to determine how the coolant to mainstream density ratio affects heat transfer. Net heat flux reduction calculations were performed by combining the heat transfer coefficient measurements of the present study with adiabatic effectiveness measurements of a separate study. In order to gain insight into the hydrodynamics that affect the heat transfer, boundary layer measurements were conducted using hot-wire anemometry.

Book excerpt: The progress under contract NAS3-24619 toward the goal of establishing a relevant data base for use in improving the predictive design capabilities for external heat transfer to turbine vanes, including the effect of downstream film cooling with and without leading edge showerhead film cooling. Experimental measurements were made in a two-dimensional cascade previously used to obtain vane surface heat transfer distributions on nonfilm cooled airfoils under contract NAS3-22761 and leading edge showerhead film cooled airfoils under contract NAS3-23695. The principal independent parameters (Mach number, Reynolds number, turbulence, wall-to-gas temperature ratio, coolant-to-gas temperature ratio, and coolant-to-gas pressure ratio) were maintained over ranges consistent with actual engine conditions and the test matrix was structured to provide an assessment of the independent influence of parameters of interest, namely, exit Mach number, exit Reynolds number, coolant-to-gas temperature ratio, and coolant-to-gas pressure ratio. Data provide a data base for downstream film cooled turbine vanes and extends the data bases generated in the two previous studies. The vane external heat transfer obtained indicate that considerable cooling benefits can be achieved by utilizing downstream film cooling. The data obtained and presented illustrate the interaction of the variables and should provide the airfoil designer and computational analyst the information required to improve heat transfer design capabilities for film cooled turbine airfoils. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Turbine blade endwall heat transfer measurements are given for a range of Reynolds and Mach numbers. Data were obtained for Reynolds numbers based on inlet conditions of 0.5 and 1.0 x 10(exp 6), for isentropic exit Mach numbers of 1.0 and 1.3, and for freestream turbulence intensities of 0.25% and 7.0%. Tests were conducted in a linear cascade at the NASA Lewis Transonic Turbine Blade Cascade Facility. The test article was a turbine rotor with 136 deg of turning and an axial chord of 12.7 cm. The large scale allowed for very detailed measurements of both flow field and surface phenomena. The intent of the work is to provide benchmark quality data for CFD code and model verification. The flow field in the cascade is highly three-dimensional as a result of thick boundary layers at the test section inlet. Endwall heat transfer data were obtained using a steady-state liquid crystal technique.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The efficiency of natural gas turbines is directly linked to the turbine inlet temperature, or the combustor exit temperature. Further increasing the turbine inlet temperature damages the turbine components and limits their durability. Advances in turbine vane cooling schemes protect the turbine components. This thesis studies the conjugate effects of internal cooling, film cooling and thermal barrier coatings (TBC) on turbine vane metal temperatures. Two-dimensional thermal profiles were experimentally measured downstream of a single row of film cooling holes on both an adiabatic and a matched Biot number model turbine vane. The measurements were taken as a comparison to computational simulations of the same model and flow conditions. To improve computational models of the evolution of a film cooling jet as it propagates downstream, the thermal field above the vane, not just the footprint on the vane surface must be analyzed. This study expands these data to include 2-D thermal fields above the vane at 0, 5 and 10 hole diameters downstream of the film cooling holes. In each case the computational jets remained colder than the experimental jets because they did not disperse into the mainstream as quickly. Finally, in comparing results above adiabatic and matched Biot number models, these thermal field measurements allow for an accurate analysis of whether or not the adiabatic wall temperature was a reasonable estimate of the driving temperature for heat transfer. In some cases the adiabatic wall temperature did give a good indication of the driving temperature for heat transfer while in other cases it did not. Previous tests simulating the effects of TBC on an internally and film cooled model turbine vane showed that the insulating effects of TBC dominate over variations in film cooling geometry and blowing ratio. In this study overall and external effectiveness were measured using a matched Biot number model vane simulating a TBC of thickness 0.6d, where d is the film cooing hole diameter. This new model was a 35% reduction in thermal resistance from previous tests. Overall effectiveness measurements were taken for an internal cooling only configuration, as well as for three rows of showerhead holes with a single row of holes on the pressure side of the vane. This pressure side row of holes was tested both as round holes and as round holes embedded in a realistic trench with a depth of 0.6 hole diameters. Even in the case of this thinner TBC, the insulating effects dominate over film cooling. In addition, using measurements of the convective heat transfer coefficient above the vane surface, and the thermal conductivities of the vane wall and simulated TBC material, a prediction technique of the overall effectiveness with TBC was evaluated.
