Book excerpt: ★ "This amazing outpouring of strength and honesty offers inspirational personal accounts for every reader who wonders what to do when everything seems impossible." --Booklist, starred review A 2019 Texas Topaz Reading List Selection A Junior Library Guild Selection Hope is a decision, but it is a hard one to recognize in the face of oppression, belittlement, alienation, and defeat. To help embolden hope, here is a powerhouse collection of essays and personal stories that speak directly to teens and all YA readers. Featuring Angie Thomas, Marie Lu, Nicola Yoon, David Levithan, Libba Bray, Jason Reynolds, Renée Ahdieh, and many more! "The hope of a secure and livable world lies with disciplined nonconformists who are dedicated to justice, peace and brotherhood."--Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. We all experience moments when we struggle to understand the state of the world, when we feel powerless and--in some cases--even hopeless. The teens of today are the caretakers of tomorrow, and yet it's difficult for many to find joy or comfort in such a turbulent society. But in trying times, words are power. Some of today's most influential young adult authors come together in this highly personal collection of essays and original stories that offer moments of light in the darkness, and show that hope is a decision we all can make. Like a modern day Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul or Don't Sweat the Small Stuff for Teens, Hope Nation acknowledges the pain and offers words of encouragement. Authors include: Atia Abawi, Renee Ahdieh, Libba Bray, Howard Bryant, Ally Carter, Ally Condie, Christina Diaz Gonzales, Gayle Forman, Romina Garber, I. W. Gregario, Kate Hart, Bendan Kiely, David Levithan, Alex London, Marie Lu, Julie Murphy, Jason Reynolds, Aisha Saeed, Nic Stone, Angie Thomas, Jenny Torres Sanchez, Jeff Zentner, and Nicola Yoon. Praise for Hope Nation: "A salve when days are bleak."--Kirkus Reviews "An important and inspiring read for thoughtful teens."--School Library Journal

Book excerpt: Also available in an open-access, full-text edition at http://oaktrust.library.tamu.edu/handle/1969.1/85766 “Emotion is an expression of the self,” Verena Kast writes in this ground-breaking study of the neglected emotions of joy, inspiration, and hope. “If we decide we no longer want to hide behind empty shells, then we will have to allow certain emotions more room. We will have to let ourselves laugh louder, cry louder, and shout for joy.” Kast skillfully and engagingly makes the case that not only therapists and analysts but also individuals seeking growth in their own lives should give more attention to the elated emotions. Fear of excess (mania) and analytic preoccupation with grief, anxiety, and depression have together caused joy and hope to be shunned as a focus in individuation (the process toward wholeness). Kast convincingly demonstrates the role of joy in relationship and existential involvement. Joy answers the human need for elated feeling and meaning in our lives, a need which is often filled in modern society by secularized parodies of religious ecstasy, such as addiction and compulsiveness. Kast explores the Dionysian myth as an archetypal image of the transforming effect of ecstasy on the personality. She considers Sisyphus, the absurd hero of French existentialism, as the symbol for rejection of false hope and joy, rejection which clears the way for true hope rooted in basic trust and the positive mother archetype. She suggests simple techniques for recapturing our joy through development of an autobiography of joy. Using this approach, we can discover what gives us joy personally, how we can best experience joy, and how and why we choke off our joy. By viewing joy, inspiration, and hope as core emotions in our being, we open ourselves to greater wholeness and fuller life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A year ago, I set out to write a book that would inspire others. I chose a wide range of people to speak on important topics that affect all of us in our day to day life. I have woven my biography into interviews with a variety of actors, musicians and motivational speakers who I have had the good fortune of calling friends. We dive deep into the topics of mental health, addiction, LGBTQ equality, the loss of a parent, spirituality, activism, representation, family, the importance of mentors, the healing power of the arts and humor. All of the people in the book wanted to use their voices to raise awareness, and provide encouragement and support to those struggling with similar hardships. This book is about unity, hope and inspiration, which is so needed in today's world. My desire is for everyone reading this book to walk away feeling hopeful and optimistic, if they are struggling in any way. The following people contributed their stories via interviews: Kris Allen, Chance Perez, Adam Hurstfield, Chance Hurstfield, Abigail Hawk, Conor Michael Smith, DeVon Franklin, Marco James, Robert Palmer Watkins, Jordi Vilasuso, Wils, Davi Santos, James Byous, Liris Crosse, Aspen Kaye, David A. Gregory, Cory Jeacoma, Everett S. Weston, Damon Gillespie, Jonathan Coords, Malachi Coords, Justin Paul, Matthew Sauvé, Alan Trinca, Andy Senor Jr., CYCLE (Christien Morneweck), Virginia Coe, Derek Connors, Tania Connors, Justiin Davis, Jay Louie and Dominick LaRuffa Jr.
