Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jamie Hill is a happily married, mother of three. There is nothing extraordinary about her, with the exception that she is a child of the Almighty God. Many of her poems describe her life. She was born in Helena, MT and raised most of her life in Mississippi. As a child she spent much of her time in and out of children's shelters and foster homes. She came from a broken home of drugs and alcohol. Many times in her life she came near death through rape, drugs, and suicide attempts. If it had not been for the Lord on her side she probably wouldn't be alive to write this book, but through prayers and "mustard seed" faith she's alive and well enough to share her testimony of how she made it through On April 29, 2007 she came out of a horrible addiction of crack-cocaine and alcohol. She committed her life to God through the precious blood of Jesus. She since has been cleansed and remains filled with the Holy Ghost. She gives all the credit where it is due to the Lord Almighty, Jesus Christ who shed His blood on Calvary to save a wretch like herself. She says that her life is like a familiar song sang by the "Williams Brothers," "I'm just a nobody, trying to tell everybody about somebody who can save anybody."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the ways in which poetic inspiration came to be associated with madness in early nineteenth-century Britain. By examining the works of poets such as Barrett, Browning, Clare, Tennyson, Townshend, and the Spasmodics in relation to the burgeoning asylum system and shifting medical discourses of the period, it investigates the ways in which Britain’s post-Romantic poets understood their own poetic vocations within a cultural context that insistently linked poetic talent with illness and insanity. Joseph Crawford examines the popularity of mesmerism among the writers of the era, as an alternative system of medicine that provided a more sympathetic account of the nature of poetic genius, and investigates the persistent tension, found throughout the literary and medical writings of the period, between the Romantic ideal of the poet as a transcendent visionary genius and the ‘medico-psychological’ conception of poets as mere case studies in abnormal neurological development.

The Newbery Medal-winning author of Walk Two Moons, Sharon Creech, introduced Jack in Love That Dog, a New York Times bestseller. Both Love That Dog and Hate That Cat are approachable, funny, warm-hearted introductions to poetry told from the point of view of a very real kid wrestling with school assignments. These books are fast reads that will be welcomed by middle graders as they too wonder how poetry and schoolwork connect with their interests and how to uncover their true voices. In Hate That Cat, Jack is only trying to save that fat black cat stuck in the tree by his bus stop—but the cat scratches him instead! At school Miss Stretchberry begins teaching new poems, everything from William Carlos Williams to Valerie Worth to T.S. Eliot. As the year progresses, Jack gradually learns to love that cat and finds new ways to express himself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Is it possible to teach someone how to write a poem? Or does poetry simply "come from the heart" or from a special talent only some can ever hope to have? Of course there's no formula for writing an amazing poem. If poems came with instructions like IKEA(r) coffee tables, we'd all be missing the point. But this book will give you some strategies-some tools, if you will-to assemble your personal, imaginative raw materials into poems that will surprise and intrigue. These strategies are focused primarily on free verse, yet many of the concepts can also be applied to form poetry, at both the inception and revision stages. "How to Write a Poem" uses images like the buzz, the switch, the wave-from the Billy Collins poem "Introduction to Poetry"-to guide writers into new ways of writing poems. Excellent teaching tool. Anthology and prompts included.

Book excerpt: Poet Laith Biltaji began writing songs and limericks in his head as a child, only committing them to paper later, as a teen. While he draws his inspiration for his poetry from everyday occurrences in his life, it was after reading Michael Crichton's book Travels that he decided to compile a collection of his poems and divide them into four categories: journeys, love, people, and songs. Biltaji's poetry is the product of his personality, which stems from both Middle Eastern roots and global exposure. It is a deconstructed, chronological documentation of his journey through early teenage years, adolescence, and adulthood, documenting influences, people, and his never-ending search for the understanding of life and the supernatural experience of love. His new poetry collection, Inspirations, takes a peek at the inspirations that have shaped his life from his teen years to the present. The poems capture and crystallize the different levels of awareness that he has experienced over a period of twenty-five years. It is that distant region within him and in this world that he has endeavored to uncover and that comes alive in Inspirations.
