Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides microscopic insights into chemical properties of NO on metal surfaces. NO/metal systems have been studied intensively to understand heterogeneous catalysis to detox exhaust NOx gas. The identification and componential analysis of various and mixed chemical species of NO adsorbed onto the surfaces have been significant challenges faced by conventional experimental techniques, such as vibrational spectroscopies. The author investigated "individual" NO molecules on Cu surfaces using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). STM not only provides information on the geometric, electronic, and vibrational properties at the single-molecule level; it is also able to manipulate molecules on surfaces to induce chemical reaction. Exploiting those techniques, the author chemically identified individual NO-related species on the surfaces and discovered new reaction processes for NO reduction, which provides microscopic insights into the catalytic mechanisms. The author also visualized wave functions of electrons in a valence orbital of NO and demonstrated that the wave functions are modified by the formation of covalent bonding or hydrogen bonding. This is, namely, "the visualization of quantum mechanics in real space," which is certainly worth reading. Furthermore, the book demonstrates that direct observation of valence orbitals helps to elucidate the reactivity of molecules adsorbed onto surfaces. This innovative approach to studying molecular properties will contribute to further development of STM and its related methods.

Book excerpt: The most efficient process to reduce NOx emissions from lean exhaust gases, selective catalytic reduction (SCR) with ammonia, has undergone tremendous development over the past decades. Originally only applied in stationary power plants and industrial installations, SCR systems are now installed in millions of mobile diesel engines, ranging from off-road machineries, to heavy-duty and light-duty trucks and passenger cars, to locomotives and ships. All of these applications involve specific challenges due to tighter emission limits, new internal combustion engine technologies, or alternative fuels. Three review articles and 14 research articles in this book describe recent results and research trends of various aspects of the SCR process. Reaction engineering aspects, such as the proper dosage of ammonia or urea, respectively, are as important as further developments of the different SCR catalysts, by deepening the understanding of their functionality or by systematic improvements of their properties, such as low-temperature activity, selectivity, or poisoning-resistance. Another covered aspect is cost reduction through the use of cheaper base materials for the production is active and stable SCR catalysts. Finally, research efforts are reported to develop SCR processes with different reducing agents, which would open doors to new applications in the future. The range of topics addressed in this book will stimulate the reader's interest as well as provide a valuable source of information for researchers in academia and industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Various established and novel quantum chemistry methods are employed to investigate the properties of photocatalytic materials. Hybrid quantum mechanics/molecular mechanics (QM/MM) cluster models are developed, allowing accurate geometric and electronic structure predictions for one-dimensional O-Ti-O chains in the microporous titanosilicate ETS-10. This model is exploited to identify transition metal substituents capable of improving the photocatalytic properties of ETS-10. A detailed investigation of vanadium substitution is presented, supporting the presence of both V IV and V V states in experimental samples. Consistent with experimental results, visible-light band gap energies and improved charge separation are predicted for V-substituted ETS-10, establishing this material as a promising visible light photocatalyst. Transition metal substitution trends, based on seven transition metals, are used to develop linear models capable of rapidly estimating key features of the electronic structure for various transition metal combinations. These linear models predict that systems with small ionic radii (V V, Fe III) and high oxidation states (V V, Mo V) are favored for obtaining visible-light band gap energies within the visible range of the spectrum. Similar computational methods are used to investigate reaction mechanisms for the high temperature decomposition of Brønsted acid and hydroxyl nest sites in zeolite materials. The decomposition of these sites is generally attributed to a dehydration mechanism. However, comparable reaction energies are predicted for proposed dehydrogenation pathways, suggesting that both reactions are likely to occur. This is consistent with recent experimental reports that have identified H 2 as the primary product from thermally treated zeolites. Predicted geometries and optical absorption spectra of the proposed dehydrogenation products are consistent with experimental results, providing insight into the structure of active sites in zeolite materials used in high temperature industrial applications. In the final section, a new methodology, the poly-functional (PF) method, is developed for predicting thermochemical properties. This method employs linear combinations of enthalpy estimates from different density functionals, exploiting error correlations among the functionals and allowing for further improvements in accuracy. Unlike more costly methods, the PF method boasts a good compromise between accuracy and computational efforts making it useful for larger systems or where computational resources are limited. Opportunities to improve PF accuracy and implications for the development of future density functional theory are discussed.

Book excerpt: Plasma catalysis is gaining increasing interest for various gas conversion applications, such as CO2 conversion into value-added chemicals and fuels, N2 fixation for the synthesis of NH3 or NOx, methane conversion into higher hydrocarbons or oxygenates. It is also widely used for air pollution control (e.g., VOC remediation). Plasma catalysis allows thermodynamically difficult reactions to proceed at ambient pressure and temperature, due to activation of the gas molecules by energetic electrons created in the plasma. However, plasma is very reactive but not selective, and thus a catalyst is needed to improve the selectivity. In spite of the growing interest in plasma catalysis, the underlying mechanisms of the (possible) synergy between plasma and catalyst are not yet fully understood. Indeed, plasma catalysis is quite complicated, as the plasma will affect the catalyst and vice versa. Moreover, due to the reactive plasma environment, the most suitable catalysts will probably be different from thermal catalysts. More research is needed to better understand the plasma–catalyst interactions, in order to further improve the applications.

Book excerpt: The calculation of traditional fluorine-containing (F2, OF2, N2F4, ClO3F, ClF5, ClF3) and oxygen-containing (OF2, O2, H2O2, N2O4, HNO3, ClO3F) oxidisers of differential fuels has been performed by the different classical semi-empirical quantum-chemical methods (CNDO, CNDO/2, MNDO, AM1, PM3) and ?B-INITIO in the many principal basis-sets optimising the all geometric parameters. It is shown, the high correlative dependencies between the burn parameters of the differential fuels (H2, N2H4, H2N2(CH3)2, CH2, AlH3, B5H9, BeH2) and calculated values of quantum-chemical parameters of the fluorine-containing (oxygencontaining) oxidisers exist in the form of Ip is specific impulse of pressure, P1 is specific traction in atmosphere, Pi is specific traction in vacuum, depending on Qfmin is minimum electronic charge on fluorine atom (Qfmin is the minimum electronic charge on oxygen atom). The authors performed comparative analysis of results of the quantum-chemical semi-empirical and ab-initio calculations for different fuels. The simple interpretation and illustration of the physical nature of these correlative dependencies are offered. The authors established the technique of theoretical estimation of the burn parameters of oxidisers of the differential fuels, that may be used to look for new more efficient non-pollution oxidisers.

This book was released on 2018-12-19 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume focuses on the host-guest chemistry of organic molecules and inorganic systems during synthesis (structure-direction). Organic molecules have been used for many years in the synthesis of zeolitic nanoporous frameworks. The addition of these organic molecules to the zeolite synthesis mixtures provokes a particular ordering of the inorganic units around them that directs the crystallization pathway towards a particular framework type; hence they are called structure-directing agents. Their use has allowed the discovery of an extremely large number of new zeolite frameworks and compositions. This volume covers the main aspects of the use of organic molecules as structure-directing agents for the synthesis of zeolites, including first an introduction of the main concepts, then two chapters covering state-of-the-art techniques currently used to understand the structure-directing phenomenon (location of molecules by XRD and molecular modeling techniques). The most recent trends in the types of organic molecules used as structure-directing agents are also presented, including the use of metal-complexes, the use of non-ammonium-based molecules (mainly phosphorus-based compounds) and the role of supramolecular chemistry in designing new large organic structure-directing agents produced by self-aggregation. In addition the volume explores the latest research attempting to transfer the asymmetric nature of organic chiral molecules used as structure-directing agents to the zeolite lattice to produce chiral enantioselective frameworks, one of the biggest challenges today in materials chemistry. This volume has interdisciplinary appeal and will engage scholars from the zeolite community with a general interest in microporous materials, which involves not only zeolite scientists, but also researchers working on metal-organic framework materials. The concepts covered will also be of interest for researchers working on the application of materials after encapsulation of molecules of interest in post-synthetic treatments. Further the work explores the main aspects of host-guest chemistry in hybrid organo-inorganic templated materials, which covers all types of materials where organic molecules are used as templates and are confined within framework-structured inorganic materials (intercalation compounds). Therefore the volume is also relevant to the wider materials chemistry community.
