Book excerpt: Literacy Pledge: For every copy of this book sold in United States, Canada or Europe, we will donate a textbook to a child in need. Find out more about our pledge at www. world-literacy.info. Please also read Author's statement in the "Author's Biography" section. Behind Amazon's quirky smile logo lurks a cold and calculating giant machine. Author Kalpanik S. reveals his own smile as he tells the somewhat quirky story of his complex, and often hilarious, relationship with Amazon. From the sophisticated wit in his portrayal of the courtship period in "How To Get Hired By Amazon In Ten Days", to the dark humor of the disillusionment period in "The Cold, Calculating Machine", Kalpanik's story is more than just an insider's view of the giant machine known as Amazon.com. It's a modern, universal story of the uneasy relationship between an individual and today's gargantuan corporations. In the end, it is also a story of redemption for creative and freethinking individuals that define America. Acclaim for the book ... not only does the author makes us feel the vitality of the Hi-Tech worlds of California & Seattle but his very emotional experiences as an immigrant, a father and a dislocated worker.I love his leaps of imagination, and the words which hook us in, make us think this is our story. For example, here is what it means to yearn for acceptance: "I looked at Seattle's glistening skyline on one side and its beautiful waterfront on the other and asked it the same questions I had asked San Francisco sixteen years ago: will it accept me? Or will its people treat me as someone different, not one of them?" Overall, a hip, funny and yet very poignant story! .....John Lehman, author of "Everything is Changing" This edition of the book was revised in December 2011 to include author's perspective on the 2011 Amazon Warehouse scandal, where a detailed investigative report on worker treatment at a regional warehouse by a local newspaper caught national media attention. Confessions of a foreign born author I must confess that English is my third language, and even though this book has been edited by several professional native English editors, it is obvious-even to me- that this book is written by a Foreign-born author. Foreign-born or not, I believe I have a talent for storytelling, and I have converted a dull topic-the transformation of Amazon from a retail website to a marketplace-into an interesting and lively story. This is more of a little book than a big one. Being a technologist, I tend to be concise in my writing. The printed version of this edition is about 220 pages. This may be too little for a few readers, too much for others, and hopefully, just right for the some. So, If you are looking for a 1,000-page treatise on Amazon that can be used as an example of perfect grammar in the High school English grammar class, then this book may not be the right book for you. There are several other books on Amazon which are written in perfect English but are perfectly boring. A book about Amazon can be pretty dry, so I have tried to add some humor. In my attempt to make this book funny, a few facts may have been stretched. I quote this passage from 21 Dog Years: Doing Time @ Amazon.com, written by Mike Daisey, a fellow Amazon alumnus-turned author: "Some facts were injured in the telling of this story. The truth, however, remains unharmed." That applies to this book as well. To respect the privacy of the people involved in this story, their names have been changed - with one exception. Trust me, there really is a guy named Jeff Bezos who works at Amazon. All in all, I am proud of my work, Enjoy! [Signed] Kalpanik S. Note: Portions of this book have been previously published under titles "Seattle Adventures", "Artificial Imagination" and "Welcome to the USA".

This book was released on 2010-10-26 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Robert Louis Stevenson said, "Everyone lives by selling something." It is the principal force driving all commercial transactions and activities, from the executive suite of suits and ties to the trenches of open collar and rolled-up sleeves. Given the relative importance of selling in our quest for achievement and success, it is critical to develop selling skills, to hone and perfect them to the best of our abilities. Lots of books have been written about this subject, giving us tips, rules, comments, anecdotes and suggestions, and many more will be written in the future. After all, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics there are more than 14 million people employed in sales and related occupations. And every one of them would like to improve their ability to close sales. "SOLD! HOW AMERICA'S GREATEST SALES AND MARKETING TITANS PULLED IT OFF" takes a different tack. Instead of listing rules or techniques, it lets you study, embrace and emulate the best salesmen/entrepreneurs who ever lived in America. Olympic skier Jean-Claude Killy once said: "The best and fastest way to learn a sport is to watch and imitate a champion." Cadets at the West Point Military Academy study the strategies of the great military leaders of the past to acquire the skills they will need in future combat. Chess players study the strategies employed by the grand chess masters to develop and improve their game. Improving sales techniques and capabilities is no different. Learning how America's super salesmen and saleswomen achieved their success is immensely instructive, all with a view to providing the reader with insight into what made these men and women so successful "Sold!" is the story of 35 titans, from Henry J. Heinz and William Wrigley, Jr., to Steve Jobs, Mary Kay Ash and Jeff Bezos, men and women who created industries, giant corporations, new products, and did it by selling--pitching their ideas and companies to investors and banks, and their products to the public.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Artificial intelligence (AI) is presented as a solution to the greatest challenges of our time, from global pandemics and chronic diseases to cybersecurity threats and the climate crisis. But AI also contributes to the climate crisis by running on technology that depletes scarce resources and by relying on data centres that demand excessive energy use. Is AI Good for the Planet? brings the climate crisis to the centre of debates around AI, exposing its environmental costs and forcing us to reconsider our understanding of the technology. It reveals why we should no longer ignore the environmental problems generated by AI. Embracing a green agenda for AI that puts the climate crisis at centre stage is our urgent priority. Engaging and passionately written, this book is essential reading for scholars and students of AI, environmental studies, politics, and media studies and for anyone interested in the connections between technology and the environment.

Book excerpt: Just as the clothes we wear can communicate our personality and how we want to be perceived, so fashion can reflect the politics and preoccupations of the society that produced it. A Cultural History of Western Fashion guides you through the relationships between haute couture and ready-to-wear designer fashions, popular culture, big business, high-tech production, as well as traditional and social media. Exploring fashion's interdisciplinary nature, English and Munroe also highlight the parallel evolution of clothing design and the other visual arts over the last 150 years. This new edition includes expanded coverage of the build up to the First World War and brings this classic text up to date. There is also a new chapter on smart textiles and technology, exploring the work of Hussein Chalayan and Iris Van Herpen among others, and expanded coverage of the role of sustainability in the contemporary fashion industry, including biosynthetic textile production and Stella McCartney's use of vegan leather.

"More than any other activity, art will help to convince us of the urgency. This is its greatness and will be its responsibility, as art lies at the forefront of boldness" (Jacques Attali). The meeting of an essay, A Brief History of the Future by Jacques Attali, and the world of contemporary art on the occasion of the exhibition organized by the Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium (11.09.2015 – 24.01.2016). This book explores the major social issues studied by Jacques Attali and points out how visual artists go beyond simple observation to take an active part in the debate and develop projects fired by a form of utopian creativity. Making museums the mirror of a world in change EXCERPT The first wave is the decline of the American empire, which is no longer omnipotent. It represents a declining share of global GDP and will even be overtaken by China, Europe and others, even if it long remains the world’s leading military power. This decline will also correspond to a lack of the cutting-edge collaborative technologies that lead to new discoveries, in particular the information technologies, biotechnologies, and so on, which will change a lot of things. There will be changes in customs, but these will probably contribute to the permanent triumph of the United States’ ideology as the dominant one in the world. The second wave is produced by the US gradually sharing its dominance with other powers. This process has already begun through the establishment of the G20. The joint government of the world is a response to the fragmentation that is taking place. No doubt we shall see conflicts between China and Japan, tension between Europe and the United States, times when the whole lot will be at loggerheads. We may well be experiencing the last period in history in which conflicts between great nations still take place. ABOUT JACQUES ATTALI Economist, writer, member of the Council of State, special adviser to François Mitterrand from 1981 to 1991, Jacques Attali was born in 1943 in Alger. Over his career he has published more than 50 books and written many articles on current events. He is also the editorial writer of L'Express.
