Download or read book Dictionary of Popes written by J. N. D. Kelly and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-07-23 with total page 709 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fascinating dictionary gives concise accounts of every officially recognized pope in history, from St Peter to Pope Francis, as well as all of their irregularly elected rivals, the so-called antipopes. Each pope and antipope's entry covers his family and social background and pre-papal career as well as his activities in office. Also, an appendix provides a detailed discussion and analysis of the tradition that there has been a female pope. This new edition reflects the very latest in papal research and contains additional information in the further reading sections of each entry, making this dictionary an even more useful starting place for research into specific pontiffs. This is a continuous history of the papacy over almost 2,000 years. It reveals how, for much of that history, spiritual and temporal power have been inextricably mingled in the person of the pope. A fascinating read for students of theology and history, as well as the general reader with an interest in Christian history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Spirit and the Church celebrates the life and legacy of Peter Damian Fehlner, OFM Conv., who for the past six decades has carried the torch of the Franciscan theological and philosophical vision in the fields of ecclesiology, pneumatology, Mariology, and anthropology. Articles by colleagues, former students, and associates fall into three broad categories, corresponding with several of the main areas in which Fehlner has made a longstanding scholarly contribution: the Church's Magisterium and development of doctrine, anthropology, comma and creation; the relation between Mariology, pneumatology, and ecclesiology; and scholarly seeds planted by Fehlner now being cultivated and harvested by younger scholars. All of the essays in this volume engage with Fehlner, evaluate his contributions, and build upon and expand in new directions the contributions of our honoree. The essays in this volume manifest the contemporary relevance of Fehlner's Franciscan vision in terms of his invitation to renew the theology of the Church in a Marian mode in the light of Vatican II.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coredemption as Key to a Correct Understanding of Redemption Originally presented as Acts of the Marian Symposium in Fatima, Portugal in the year 2007, addresses central Christological issues bearing on the meaning and consequences of the Redemption, those arising from an incorrect or total lack of understanding of the mystery of Marian coredemption. Such aberrations as patripassianism, liberation theology, Kantian transcendentalism substituted for scholastic metaphysics, soteriological substitutionism and the Protestant solus, reflect a deeply rooted Marian minimalism and rejection of Mary’s prerogative as Coredemptrix.

Book Synopsis Christian Ethics Non-violent Resistance Approach to Boko Haram by : Anthony Okechukwu Nnadi PhD STD
Download or read book Christian Ethics Non-violent Resistance Approach to Boko Haram written by Anthony Okechukwu Nnadi PhD STD and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2024-04-10 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book takes a practical look at the complexity of the nature of violence/terrorism in Nigeria, in the light of the Catholic social teaching on non-violent resistance. With the critical analyses of some policies/strategies used to address the problem of Boko Haram terrorism in Nigeria, the book explores a range of questions: Does severe punishment work effectively as deterrence against possible involvement in terrorism? Does applying “lex talionis” reduce or exacerbate recidivism? What are the right mechanisms to stop terrorism/violence in Nigeria? This book is convinced that nothing is resolved through violence, and that, violence begets violence, alluding that, responding to terror with terror is a retaliatory method that is self-defeating. On the whole, it has been noted that the principle or law of retaliation (Lex Talionis) alone cannot stop armed insurgency in Nigeria, thus, the book suggests non-violent resistance as the best way to address terrorism and violent conflicts. Non-violent resistance does not mean condoning violent attacks against innocent civilians. Based on the Christian ethical principles of the dignity of the human person and justice, this book explicitly declares that the killing of innocent civilians is absolutely immoral. The book explores the use of the term Islamic terrorism and the Islamic ethics of justice, peace and nonviolence, and underlines that the Islamic core moral principles in no way support terrorism. While stating that terrorism is morally wrong, this book states that the causes of terrorism must be addressed with justice and fairness. On this basis, the book insists on critically investigating the following: religious extremism, corruption, bigotry in politics and religion, the glaring sense of apathy among the political elite to the suffering of the oppressed, and the mismanagement and abuse of political positions or the nation’s resources for selfish interest. There must be a rethink aimed at finding the best way to build an ethical society – a framework for justice and peace.

Download or read book A New Way written by Chiara Lubich and published by New City Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of spirituality has never seen a way to God like this one. Till now all forms of spiritual growth have focused on the individual’s discovery of the Beauty of Beauties, the God who fascinates the human heart. And they have striven to find ways in which individuals can be transformed, ways in which they can enter into the ultimate experience. In essence none of this disappears. But the spirituality that Chiara Lubich and her companions have discovered is a “new way” in which people go to God not primarily as individuals, but together. It is a “spirituality of communion,” as described by John Paul II. No longer is the spiritual life about withdrawing from other people, nor just about serving them. It is about living with them in unity, growing together in God. “What do I wish for this book? That it may become nourishment for the lives of many and that it may contribute to making the Church beautiful, so that for the salvation of the world and for the glory of God the Church may live among men and women, as a sign of and a pointer towards happiness.” Cardinal Miloslav Vlk Archbishop of Prague
