These insects are often suspected injuring the plants over which they are seen running, but as a rule they are only indirectly responsible. A few species, such as the large black Carpenter Ants. Form their galleries in trunks of trees, posts and timber and do a con siderable amount of damage, but the great variety of smaller species which infest our gardens do not feed upon foliage or injure growing plants. Sometimes they may be found upon unopened flower buds, but they are only attracted by some sweet secretions on the surface; as a rule their presence indicates that there is a colony of Aphids near by, which they take under their protection in order to obtain from them the sweet honey-dew exuded by these minute creatures. The worst injury for which ants are responsible is the establishmnt of colonies of Aphids upon the roots of many plants; the ants collect the eggs and take care of them during the winter and when growth is sufficiently advanced carry them to the roots and look after them during the summer, in order to have a constant supply of honey dew. These colonies increase rapidly and soon check the growth of the plant and ultimately destroy it. Where ants' nests abound, frequent digging and stirring of the soil, and in field cultivation repeated disking and harrowing, will get rid of many, or they may be treated with carbon bisulphide; a small quantity should be poured into the entrance of the nest or into a hole made with a stick and quickly covered with earth: the fumes will speed ily kill all the inmates. It is best to perform the Operation towards even ing when all the ants are within the nest This is a very effective mode of getting rid of the large colonies which make mounds of rubbish on lawns and in fields. Beds built over subsoil tended to remain uninfested for a much longer period than those built over topsoil. Damage was overcome to some extent by removing the topsoil before constructing the bed (7, p. Cats - Wild house cats frequently do a great deal of damage in seedbeds and freshly prepared and planted nursery beds by scratching around in the loose planting medium. All ears were harvested at the roasting-ear stage and immediately examined for extent Of filling of the ear as well as for the presence of insect larvae. Separate records were taken for each ear, the presence or absence of both species Of earworms or the small, corn-silk fly larvae being recorded. It is difficult to distinguish the larvae of the corn earworm from those Of the fall armyworm; since both are known to be present in the island and since they caused the same kind Of damage no attempt was made to separate them, and both types are mentioned together. The presence Of a single larva Of any one of the three ear pests was sufficient for an ear to be classified as infested. Protecting silks for period prior to pollination resulted in poorly filled. Ears. The filling of the ears was unsatisfactory even when the silks were exposed for 168 hours. Only 10. 4 percent Of the ears were well filled following the 4-hour exposure, 53 percent as a result Of the 24-hour exposure, and only 61 percent after 168 hours' exposure. Insects offer a significant opportunity to merge traditional knowledge and modern science to improve human food security worldwide. This publication describes the contribution of insects to food security and examines future prospects for raising insects at a commercial scale to improve food and feed production, diversify diets, and support livelihoods in both developing and developed countries. It shows the many traditional and potential new uses of insects for direct human consumption and the opportunities for and constraints to farming them for food and feed. It examines the body of research on issues such as insect nutrition and food safety, the use of insects as animal feed, and the processing and preservation of insects and their products. It highlights the need to develop a regulatory framework to govern the use of insects for food security. And it presents case studies and examples from around the world. Edible insects are a promising alternative to the conventional production of meat, either for direct human consumption or for indirect use as feedstock. To fully realise this potential, much work needs to be done by a wide range of stakeholders. This publication will boost awareness of the many valuable roles that insects play in sustaining nature and human life, and it will stimulate debate on the expansion of the use of insects as food and feed.
