Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book described vibration reduction for flexible structures by the command smoothing techniques. The Command smoothing technique is a kind of open-loop controller. The operator's commands filter through a piecewise continuous function, called smoother, to produce smoothed commands. Smoothed commands move flexible dynamic systems toward desired positions with minimal oscillations. Five types of command smoother were reported including one-piece, two-pieces, three-pieces, and four-pieces smoothers, and the smoother for multi-mode Duffing oscillators. All smoothers are robust to changes in the system parameters and working conditions. The command smoothing technique has been successfully applied to industrial cranes, sloshing suppression, flexible manipulators, high-speed cam and follower systems, and helicopter slung loads.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Machine vibration leads to lower precision, efficiency, and safety. As a result, large sums of money and innumerable man-hours are spent in efforts to reduce vibration in machinery. A subclass of machinery that is widely used in industry is two-mode flexible systems. Cranes with double-pendulum dynamics and two-link flexible robotic arms are representative examples of two-mode flexible systems. In order to thoroughly understand these types of systems, a detailed study of double-pendulum cranes is preformed. The crane payload is considered to be a distributed mass. The parameters of the payload and the crane has important effects on the dynamic response. the effects are studied as a function of the parameters so that effective control methods can be developed. This thesis develops a technique for improving the control of two-mode flexible systems called input shaping. Input shaping is a control strategy that uses a series of impulses to modify the reference command to suppress unwanted vibration in a system. This thesis reviews several types of input shapers and presents a method for optimizing a robust input shaper called Specified Insensitivity input shapers using knowledge of amplitude contributions of each mode to the overall response. Simulations and experiments are presented to verify the new algorithm. Two human operator studies are presented to demonstrate the effectiveness of input shaping when used in conjunction with distributed crane payloads, such as cargo containers. One study investigates the improvement in efficiency when using input shaping and the differences in efficiency between input shapers. The other study investigates operator learning when moving a payload with unshaped and shaped commands.

Book excerpt: This book is the result of over ten (10) years of research and development in flexible robots and structures at Sandia National Laboratories. The authors de cided to collect this wealth of knowledge into a set of viewgraphs in order to teach a graduate class in Flexible Robot Dynamics and Controls within the Mechanical En gineering Department at the University of New Mexico (UNM). These viewgraphs, encouragement from several students, and many late nights have produced a book that should provide an upper-level undergraduate and graduate textbook and a reference for experienced professionals. The content of this book spans several disciplines including structural dynam ics, system identification, optimization, and linear, digital, and nonlinear control theory which are developed from several points of view including electrical, me chanical, and aerospace engineering as well as engineering mechanics. As a result, the authors believe that this book demonstrates the value of solid applied theory when developing hardware solutions to real world problems. The reader will find many real world applications in this book and will be shown the applicability of these techniques beyond flexible structures which, in turn, shows the value of mul tidisciplinary education and teaming.

Book excerpt: Control of Flexible-link Manipulators Using Neural Networks addresses the difficulties that arise in controlling the end-point of a manipulator that has a significant amount of structural flexibility in its links. The non-minimum phase characteristic, coupling effects, nonlinearities, parameter variations and unmodeled dynamics in such a manipulator all contribute to these difficulties. Control strategies that ignore these uncertainties and nonlinearities generally fail to provide satisfactory closed-loop performance. This monograph develops and experimentally evaluates several intelligent (neural network based) control techniques to address the problem of controlling the end-point of flexible-link manipulators in the presence of all the aforementioned difficulties. To highlight the main issues, a very flexible-link manipulator whose hub exhibits a considerable amount of friction is considered for the experimental work. Four different neural network schemes are proposed and implemented on the experimental test-bed. The neural networks are trained and employed as online controllers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among the Environmental Restoration and Waste Management Program of the U.S. Department of Energy, the remediation of radioactive waste from the underground storage tank challenges the state-of-the-art equipment and methods. Long-reach manipulators are being considered to be one of the most advantageous approaches for the retrieval of waste from large storage tanks. Because of long-reach manipulator's high payload capacity and high length-to-cross-section ratios, such manipulator system exhibits significant structural flexibility. To avoid structural vibrations during operation, control algorithms employing various types of shaping filters were investigated. A robust notch filtering method and an impulse shaping method were evaluated. In addition to that, a new approach that uses imbedded simulation was developed and compared with others. In the new approach, joint trajectories have been generated considering the flexible link dynamics.
