Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problem of dealing with missing or incomplete data in machine learning and computer vision arises in many applications. Recent strategies make use of generative models to impute missing or corrupted data. Advances in computer vision using deep generative models have found applications in image/video processing, such as denoising, restoration, super-resolution, or inpainting. Inpainting and Denoising Challenges comprises recent efforts dealing with image and video inpainting tasks. This includes winning solutions to the ChaLearn Looking at People inpainting and denoising challenges: human pose recovery, video de-captioning and fingerprint restoration. This volume starts with a wide review on image denoising, retracing and comparing various methods from the pioneer signal processing methods, to machine learning approaches with sparse and low-rank models, and recent deep learning architectures with autoencoders and variants. The following chapters present results from the Challenge, including three competition tasks at WCCI and ECML 2018. The top best approaches submitted by participants are described, showing interesting contributions and innovating methods. The last two chapters propose novel contributions and highlight new applications that benefit from image/video inpainting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique text/reference presents a detailed review of noise removal for photographs and video. An international selection of expert contributors provide their insights into the fundamental challenges that remain in the field of denoising, examining how to properly model noise in real scenarios, how to tailor denoising algorithms to these models, and how to evaluate the results in a way that is consistent with perceived image quality. The book offers comprehensive coverage from problem formulation to the evaluation of denoising methods, from historical perspectives to state-of-the-art algorithms, and from fast real-time techniques that can be implemented in-camera to powerful and computationally intensive methods for off-line processing. Topics and features: describes the basic methods for the analysis of signal-dependent and correlated noise, and the key concepts underlying sparsity-based image denoising algorithms; reviews the most successful variational approaches for image reconstruction, and introduces convolutional neural network-based denoising methods; provides an overview of the use of Gaussian priors for patch-based image denoising, and examines the potential of internal denoising; discusses selection and estimation strategies for patch-based video denoising, and explores how noise enters the imaging pipeline; surveys the properties of real camera noise, and outlines a fast approximation of nonlocal means filtering; proposes routes to improving denoising results via indirectly denoising a transform of the image, considering the right noise model and taking into account the perceived quality of the outputs. This concise and clearly written volume will be of great value to researchers and professionals working in image processing and computer vision. The book will also serve as an accessible reference for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in computer science, applied mathematics, and related fields. "The relentless quest for higher image resolution, greater ISO sensitivity, faster frame rates and smaller imaging sensors in digital imaging and videography has demanded unprecedented innovation and improvement in noise reduction technologies. This book provides a comprehensive treatment of all aspects of image noise including noise modelling, state of the art noise reduction technologies and visual perception and quantitative evaluation of noise.” Geoff Woolfe, Former President of The Society for Imaging Science and Technology. "This book on denoising of photographic images and video is the most comprehensive and up-to-date account of this deep and classic problem of image processing. The progress on its solution is being spectacular. This volume therefore is a must read for all engineers and researchers concerned with image and video quality." Jean-Michel Morel, Professor at Ecole Normale Supérieure de Cachan, France.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Compressed Sensing (CS) in theory deals with the problem of recovering a sparse signal from an under-determined system of linear equations. The topic is of immense practical significance since all naturally occurring signals can be sparsely represented in some domain. In recent years, CS has helped reduce scan time in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (making scans more feasible for pediatric and geriatric subjects) and has also helped reduce the health hazard in X-Ray Computed CT. This book is a valuable resource suitable for an engineering student in signal processing and requires a basic understanding of signal processing and linear algebra. Covers fundamental concepts of compressed sensing Makes subject matter accessible for engineers of various levels Focuses on algorithms including group-sparsity and row-sparsity, as well as applications to computational imaging, medical imaging, biomedical signal processing, and machine learning Includes MATLAB examples for further development

Book excerpt: This book covers recent advances in image processing and imaging sciences from an optimization viewpoint, especially convex optimization with the goal of designing tractable algorithms. Throughout the handbook, the authors introduce topics on the most key aspects of image acquisition and processing that are based on the formulation and solution of novel optimization problems. The first part includes a review of the mathematical methods and foundations required, and covers topics in image quality optimization and assessment. The second part of the book discusses concepts in image formation and capture from color imaging to radar and multispectral imaging. The third part focuses on sparsity constrained optimization in image processing and vision and includes inverse problems such as image restoration and de-noising, image classification and recognition and learning-based problems pertinent to image understanding. Throughout, convex optimization techniques are shown to be a critically important mathematical tool for imaging science problems and applied extensively. Convex Optimization Methods in Imaging Science is the first book of its kind and will appeal to undergraduate and graduate students, industrial researchers and engineers and those generally interested in computational aspects of modern, real-world imaging and image processing problems.

Book excerpt: Image denoising, image deblurring, image inpainting, super-resolution, and compressed sensing reconstruction have important application value in engineering practice, and they are also the hot frontiers in the field of image processing. This book focuses on the numerical analysis of ill condition of imaging inverse problems and the methods of solving imaging inverse problems based on operator splitting. Both algorithmic theory and numerical experiments have been addressed. The book is divided into six chapters, including preparatory knowledge, ill-condition numerical analysis and regularization method of imaging inverse problems, adaptive regularization parameter estimation, and parallel solution methods of imaging inverse problem based on operator splitting. Although the research methods in this book take image denoising, deblurring, inpainting, and compressed sensing reconstruction as examples, they can also be extended to image processing problems such as image segmentation, hyperspectral decomposition, and image compression. This book can benefit teachers and graduate students in colleges and universities, or be used as a reference for self-study or further study of image processing technology engineers.
