III. TAVERNS OF FLEET STREET AND THEREABOUTS. IV. TAVERNS WEST OF TEMPLE BAR. VI. INNS AND TAVERNS FURTHER AFIELD. II. COFFEE-HOUSES OF OLD LONDON. I. COFFEE-HOUSES ON 'CHANGE AND NEAR-BY. II. ROUND ST PAUL'S. III. THE STRAND AND COVENT GARDEN. IV. FURTHER WEST. III. THE CLUBS OF OLD LONDON. LITERARY. "SOCIAL AND GAMING." IV. PLEASURE GARDENS OF OLD LONDON. I. VAUXHALL. II. RANELAGH. For all races of Teutonic origin the claim is made that they are essentially home-loving people. Yet the Englishman of the sixteenth and seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, especially of the latter, is seen to have exercised considerable zeal in creating substitutes for that home which, as a Teuton, he ought to have loved above all else. This, at any rate, was emphatically the case with the Londoner, as the following pages will testify. When he had perfected his taverns and inns, perfected them, that is, according to the light of the olden time, he set to work evolving a new species of public resort in the coffee-house. That type of establishment appears to have been responsible for the development of the club, another substitute for the home. And then came the age of the pleasure-garden. Both the latter survive, the one in a form of a more rigid exclusiveness than the eighteenth century Londoner would have deemed possible; the other in so changed a guise that frequenters of the prototype would scarcely recognize the relationship. But the coffee-house and the inn and tavern of old London exist but as a picturesque memory which these pages attempt to revive.

Book excerpt: Pubs represent a history of London life that stretches across the centuries from the taverns that served Chaucer and Shakespeare to those frequented by Orwell and Dickens. From river pubs to theater pubs, Victorian gin palaces to medieval coaching houses, the pubs covered here have been chosen for their architecture and interiors, for having a role in local social history, or having once been frequented by the famous, infamous, and in some cases, ghostly. This guide includes details on hundreds of historical pubs in each area. There are practical tips and information on all the pubs featured, such as travel, opening hours, food and beer selections, as well as maps of all the main areas and listings of other attractions near every pub.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: London's public houses evolved from two separate institutions: the inn, providing accommodation, and the tavern, serving drinks. The author has chosen over 150 places of refreshment, some old, some new, but each with its own distinctive character. He has grouped them into areas so that the thirsty explorer may visit several at a time. He describes their location, tells something of the history and legend of the older houses and mentions famous customers of the past. About the author John Wittich has lectured on London and architecture for many years. A guide-lecturer of the London Tourist Board, he holds Fellowships of the Royal Society of Arts and the Ancient Monuments Society. He is a Freeman of the City of London and Liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Woolmen, and a Member of the Court of the Worshipful Company of Parish Clerks. Other titles for Shire by this author are: Discovering London Curiosities (currently out of print) Discovering London Street Names London Villages (currently out of print) Discovering Off-Beat Walks in London

Book excerpt: A history of Britain told through the story of one very special pub, from "The Beer Drinker's Bill Bryson" (Times Literary Supplement) Welcome to the George Inn near London Bridge; a cosy, wood-paneled, galleried coaching house a few minutes' walk from the Thames. Grab yourself a pint, listen to the chatter of the locals and lean back, resting your head against the wall. And then consider this: who else has rested their head against that wall, over the last six hundred years? Chaucer and his fellow pilgrims almost certainly drank in the George on their way out of London to Canterbury. It's fair to say that Shakespeare popped in from the nearby Globe for a pint, and we know that Dickens certainly did. Mail carriers changed their horses here, before heading to all four corners of Britain—while sailors drank here before visiting all four corners of the world. The pub, as Pete Brown points out, is the 'primordial cell of British life' and in the George he has found the perfect example. All life is here, from murderers, highwaymen, and ladies of the night to gossiping peddlers and hard-working clerks. So sit back with Shakespeare's Pub and watch as buildings rise and fall over the centuries, and 'the beer drinker's Bill Bryson' (UK's Times Literary Supplement) takes us on an entertaining tour through six centuries of history, through the stories of everyone that ever drank in one pub.
