This book was released on 2020-10-09 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ultrasound excitation of structural steel members leads to localised energy dissipation at existent fatigue cracks and thus allows for thermographic flaw detection. Essential effects on the defect-selective heating, such as flaw size, plate thickness, crack mouth opening or static preload, are systematically investigated. Laser vibrometry measurements of the crack edges, theoretical modelling of frictional heating and numerical simulations contribute to the understanding of the involved physics. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In condensed matter initially fast positrons annihilate after having reached equi librium with the surroundings. The interaction of positrons with matter is governed by the laws of ordinary quantum mechanics. Field theory and antiparticle properties enter only in the annihilation process leading to the emergence of energetic photons. The monitoring of annihilation radiation by nuclear spectroscopic methods provides valuable information on the electron-positron system which can directly be related to the electronic structure of the medium. Since the positron is a positive electron its behavior in matter is especially interesting to solid-state and atomic physi cists. The small mass quarantees that the positron is really a quantum mechanical particle and completely different from any other particles and atoms. Positron physics started about 25 years ago but discoveries of new features in its interac tion with matter have maintained continuous interest and increasing activity in the field. Nowadays it is becoming part of the "stock-in-trade" of experimental physics.

Book excerpt: This report examines materials research programs across all operating Administrations within the U.S. Department of Transportation. It is the department's first report on ongoing and planned research and technology efforts in advanced materials. The report was published in support of the Administration's initiative to establish an integrated program of research designed to enhance the performance and longevity of the Nation's transportation infrastructure. It is intended to provide the department's customers with a consolidated report of materials-related research projects. The report highlights opportunities for joint research and near-term applications of advanced materials technologies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the development of a technique for obtaining a reliable assessment of the condition of steel bridge pins already determined by ultrasound to contain imperfections. The details of a technique for performing high-definition ultrasonic scans of pins in the field are described. Results demonstrating this technique on specially fabricated calibration pins with actual cracks and actual bridge pins in the field are presented. A mathematical model for tracing the propagation of ultrasonic sound rays is also described. This model can be used as a tool to help interpret scanned images of imperfect pins. The researchers recommend that future research be carried out to develop further the instrumentation equipment and models needed for accurate field assessment of steel bridge pins.
