Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to examine the adoption of sustainable building practices and understand stakeholder relationships that may influence the adoption of sustainable building practices. The study proposes a conceptual framework based on an extensive review of literature in the following areas: 1) the nature of construction practice and particular challenges for sustainability, 2) stakeholder interactions and information flows in construction projects, and 3) diffusion of innovation in the building context. A set of factors that may influence the adoption of sustainable building practices by stakeholders in construction projects are included in this conceptual framework. The study then tests some key components of the framework using empirical data, to shed new light on the mechanism of achieving sustainable building practices. This study includes buildings that both have and have not adopted sustainable building practices (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design and Energy Star certifications) in the New York metropolitan area, and identifies organizations involved in projects in order to understand the trajectory of the adoption process and the diffusion among project stakeholders. Findings indicate that stakeholders' previous exposure to sustainable practices increased the likelihood of projects adopting sustainable practices; and having an architect and a general contractor who had worked on sustainable building practices increased the likelihood of adopting sustainable building programs. On the other hand, stakeholders' previous work collaboration is not associated with the adoption of sustainable building practices and it may not necessarily strengthen the relationships among stakeholders. The study makes theoretical, methodological, and practical contributions. The proposed conceptual framework integrates theories in diffusion of innovation and stakeholder theories in the building industry to understand the elements of the adoption process of new practices for better sustainability outcomes. The methodology developed to utilize multiple secondary datasets contribute to future research methods by enabling the accumulation of knowledge. It is important to point out that the small sample size included in the data analysis limits the internal and external validities of the findings above. Therefore, it is hard to claim these findings without further research, which is suggested at the end of this study.

Within this trajectory, the low-tech design for remanufacturing represents a reference framework and a promising tool applicable to the building processes. The enabling technologies and new paradigms for the transition to circular economy emerging from the European research scenario are also mapped, outlining z`the possible future developments in line with open technical and societal challenges.

Sustainable consumption focuses on formulating equitable strategies that foster the highest quality of life, the efficient use of natural resources, and the effective satisfaction of human needs while simultaneously promoting equitable social development, economic competitiveness, and technological innovation. But this is a complex topic and, as the challenges of sustainability grow larger, there is a need to re-imagine how SCP policies can be formulated, governed and implemented. The EU-funded project "Sustainable Consumption Research Exchanges" (SCORE!) consists of around 200 experts in the field of sustainable innovation and sustainable consumption. The SCORE! philosophy is that innovation in SCP policy can be achieved only if experts that understand business development, (sustainable) solution design, consumer behaviour and system innovation policy work together in shaping it. Sustainable technology design can be effective only if business can profitably make the products and consumers are attracted to them. To understand how this might effectively happen, the expertise of systems thinkers must be added to the mix. System Innovation for Sustainability 1 is the first result of a unique positive confrontation between experts from all four communities. It examines what SCP is and what it could be, provides a state-of-the-art review on the governance of change in SCP policy and looks at the strengths and weaknesses of current approaches. The SCORE! experts are working with actors in industry, consumer groups and eco-labelling organisations in the key consumption areas of mobility, food and agriculture, and energy use and housing – responsible for 70% of the life-cycle environmental impacts of Western societies – with the aim of stimulating, fostering or forcing change to SCP theory in practice. The System Innovation for Sustainability series will continue with three further volumes of comprehensive case studies in each of these three critical consumption areas.
