Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The National Clean Energy Fund (NCEF), announced in the Government of India’s Budget 2010-11, is seen as a major step in India's quest for energy security and reducing the carbon intensity of energy. Funding research and innovative projects in clean energy technologies, and harnessing renewable energy sources to reduce dependence on fossil fuels constitute the objectives of the NCEF. The NCEF’s utilization of funds is considered to be rather low and disbursements poorly aligned with the fund’s stated objectives, thus posing a potential risk of diluting the focus of NCEF with adverse implications for the much-needed research and innovation in the clean energy sector in India. The book provides a detailed framework for promoting effective utilization and administration of NCEF. To this effect, it identifies the most promising avenues for utilization of NCEF resources for catalytic opportunities and deployment of new technologies. It also identifies and prioritizes the specific energy sub-sectors towards which the NCEF resources are directed. It also makes suggestions for designing a smart monitoring and evaluation framework for the NCEF. This work provides significant information for the government so that appropriate mid-course corrections may be made in a timely manner. This will also be useful in honing the strategic thinking on a suitable energy-technology policy and an assessment of technology needs and other barriers to the clean energy sector in India.

More than one third of India's population currently do not have access to electricity. Urgent action is needed to overcome this problem of energy poverty. At the same time rapid economic growth is projected to increase electricity demand by fivefold to sixfold between now and 2050. Massive investments will be needed to meet this increased demand, but this will also create unique opportunities to transform the power sector towards a low-carbon future. This Information Paper presents in more detail the analysis for India published in Energy Technology Perspectives 2010. The paper investigates the best way of achieving deep CO2 emission cuts in the Indian power system while allowing the Indian economy to continue growing and meeting the challenge of alleviating energy poverty. It does so from a techno-economic perspective - building on detailed resource and technology data for India - and identifies the key power sector technologies needed for India to realise such a transition.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All over India, the shortage of power is a reality that affects all walks of life, all kinds of people. Among its most tangible impacts is the shortage of electricity in the domestic sector. Despite the fact that India's capacity to generate power has grown from 1362 MW at the time of Independence to over 100 000 MW in 2001, there is still, on an average, an eight per cent shortfall. Each person in India can use about 350 kW of power every year, and this is among the lowest per capita averages in the world. Hours of load shedding, sweltering summers, and cold winters without enough power are all common experiences for the average Indian. Generators and inverters are fast competing with refrigerators and televisions as hot-selling consumer goods.'Empowering the Indian city: scenarios and solutions' is an attempt to bring into focus the various issues that confront development in the Indian power sector, with special reference to the urban power supply to the domestic sector. It puts forth a multitude of choices that exist before the Indian citizen, the government, and the industry to create a future where electricity can be a resource not so ridden by scarcity and bad quality. Many of us have often thought about what alternatives exist before us, other than buying a cost-intensive, polluting generator, or an inverter that will hike our electricity bills considerably. This concise book tries to list out a few ways of bridging this shortage by focusing on alternative energy sources, energy-efficient lighting, and governmental reform, which is already in the pipeline. It is a book not just about shortage of power. It is also about the theft of power, bad management practices in the sector and the misuse of power, faulty tariff systems, and low quality in what is supplied to the consumer as usable power. It is also about the future of power reforms in the country and which way they are headed.

Book excerpt: Electricity, supplied reliably and affordably, is foundational to the U.S. economy and is utterly indispensable to modern society. However, emissions resulting from many forms of electricity generation create environmental risks that could have significant negative economic, security, and human health consequences. Large-scale installation of cleaner power generation has been generally hampered because greener technologies are more expensive than the technologies that currently produce most of our power. Rather than trade affordability and reliability for low emissions, is there a way to balance all three? The Power of Change: Innovation for Development and Deployment of Increasingly Clean Energy Technologies considers how to speed up innovations that would dramatically improve the performance and lower the cost of currently available technologies while also developing new advanced cleaner energy technologies. According to this report, there is an opportunity for the United States to continue to lead in the pursuit of increasingly clean, more efficient electricity through innovation in advanced technologies. The Power of Change: Innovation for Development and Deployment of Increasingly Clean Energy Technologies makes the case that America's advantagesâ€"world-class universities and national laboratories, a vibrant private sector, and innovative states, cities, and regions that are free to experiment with a variety of public policy approachesâ€"position the United States to create and lead a new clean energy revolution. This study focuses on five paths to accelerate the market adoption of increasing clean energy and efficiency technologies: (1) expanding the portfolio of cleaner energy technology options; (2) leveraging the advantages of energy efficiency; (3) facilitating the development of increasing clean technologies, including renewables, nuclear, and cleaner fossil; (4) improving the existing technologies, systems, and infrastructure; and (5) leveling the playing field for cleaner energy technologies. The Power of Change: Innovation for Development and Deployment of Increasingly Clean Energy Technologies is a call for leadership to transform the United States energy sector in order to both mitigate the risks of greenhouse gas and other pollutants and to spur future economic growth. This study's focus on science, technology, and economic policy makes it a valuable resource to guide support that produces innovation to meet energy challenges now and for the future.

Book excerpt: This digital book presents a brief history of renewable energy work carried out since 1981 at Nimbkar Agricultural Research Institute (NARI). Too often the record of research and development (R&D) is written up as articles in journals and books. The human interest story of the way the research was done, interactions with the stakeholders and the pushes and pulls in doing it are left out of the record. This book is an attempt to record these details. It also shows how R&D can be done in a small rural institute and should provide inspiration to other NGOs who want to do a similar type of work. The aim of the book is to inspire youngsters to enter the field of rural innovations and to provide challenging ideas for research and development to those who already are converts. Dr. Rajvanshi has written in an engaging style about the romance of doing research in rural setting and has shown that with meager resources and few members of staff, very meaningful and satisfying R&D work can be done. It is often said that good R&D requires lot of equipment, money and manpower. Work on renewable energy at NARI has shown that it is possible to do good work in little money and resources”, said Dr. Rajvanshi. There are six chapters in the book, out of which five describe the hardware development work carried out in household energy (cooking and lighting); gasification; electric cycle rickshaws and water-related problems among others. The last chapter deals with the philosophical issues and hence gives a roadmap for the future development of rural India. The book is a very interesting read as it emphasizes the human interest aspect of problem solving for rural India. The future research areas described at the end of each chapter will certainly be very useful for persons who are planning to develop a career in research and development for rural areas. The book is available free of cost and is available on NARI website http://www.nariphaltan.org/roi.pdf. This book has been written in the hope that it may inspire bright engineers to be engaged in rural R&D and thus making the book available free may help in this effort.

This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reduction of distribution losses is the key to sustainability of entire Indian power sector. Although sufficient emphasis has been placed on adoption of distribution loss reduction technologies (LRT) such as high voltage distribution system, it has not made significant inroads. Building on new institutional economics and sociological approaches, we propose actor analysis as a prerequisite for understanding barriers to technology adoption. The approach emphasizes understanding of action situations and power, interests and interdependencies of involved actors for LRT adoption. Using the method of stakeholder analysis, the study identifies key actors and their interdependencies in LRT adoption processes. The paper concludes that loss reduction and LRT adoption policies can be effectively implemented by engaging consumers through information sharing and, by showcasing advantages of LRT projects especially those leading to improvement in quality of electricity supply.
