Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While many firms compete through the development of new technologies and products, it is well known that new-to-the-world innovation is inherently risky and therefore may increase the probability of firm death. However, many existing studies consistently find a negative association between innovative activity and firm death. We argue that this may occur because authors fail to distinguish between innovation investments and innovation capital. Using an unbalanced panel of over 290,000 Australian companies, we estimate a piecewise-constant exponential hazard rate model to examine the relationship between innovation and survival and find that current innovation investments increase the probability of death while innovation capital lowers it.

Book excerpt: Although many companies compete through the development of new technologies and products, it is well known that innovation is inherently risky and therefore may increase the ex ante likelihood of both exceptional company performance and bankruptcy. However, existing empirical studies consistently find a positive relationship between innovative activity and company survival. We argue that this conclusion may be a result of a simple selection effect caused by the degree of uncertainty embodied in the innovation proxies used. Using a panel of almost 300,000 Australian companies, we estimate a piecewise-constant exponential hazard rate model to examine the relationship between innovation and company survival. As expected, we find that the degree of uncertainty embodied in different innovation proxies does shape the pattern of company survival.
Book Synopsis Survival Factors of Newly Founded Firms by : Wladimir Wiegel

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2009 in the subject Business economics - Company formation, Business Plans, grade: 1,7, University of Mannheim, language: English, abstract: New enterprises are a source of economic growth, innovation, structural change and em-ployment. However, new firms face a serious problem of high mortality subsequent to their entry into the market. Thus the goal of this thesis paper was to identify survival factors of newly founded firms. This incorporated first to identify existing theoretical frameworks of SFR and second to provide insights into some empirical key findings for some important survival factors of newly founded businesses within the existing literature. In the core part of this paper, a crude systematization of success determinants into personal, firm-specific and environmental factors was used. The analysis of literature on firm survival and success factors revealed a mixed picture as different studies came up with contradicting results. Only few key findings were revealed to have consistent re-sults, which are further presented and discussed in this paper. Furthermore, a critical review of the success factor literature revealed also that utilization of different success measures, biased and unrepresentative samples, inappropriate analytical methods and the lack of a theory-driven approach all contribute to inconsistent results. Finally, it was also identified that the research community faces a paucity of literature in the field of regional and pre-entry determinants and how they impact on business success and survival.

Book Synopsis Determinants of Innovation by : Manoj Joshi
Download or read book Determinants of Innovation written by Manoj Joshi and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most important question that researchers query about is how does the history influence innovative activities and how does it point to successful innovation? What are the determinants to it? Researchers however have been able to establish that entrepreneurship, new start-ups, consolidation of businesses, interaction with other companies and financial markets create an environment that is convincing to innovations. The most important determinant of innovation is the innovative effort. This can be measured by the expenditure in R&D etc. The level of interaction with different users also plays a vital role and cannot be ignored. A conducive environment for innovation is created by large and diversified human capital and entrepreneurial spirit both in the business and academic worlds. It is interesting to study and follow innovative firms that have launched one or more product innovations onto the market. What is further interesting as to what has happened to these firms before and after the commercialisation of an innovation?
Book Synopsis Innovation, Technological Conditions and New Firm Survival by : Paul H. Jensen

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High neonatal mortality is one of the most salient 'facts' about firm performance in the industrial organisation literature. We model firm survival and examine the relative influence of firm, industry and macroeconomic factors on survival for new vis-à-vis incumbent firms in Australia. In particular, we focus on how the intensity of innovation in each industry relates to firm survival. Our results imply that while new firms thrive in risky and innovative industries, they are also more susceptible to business cycle effects such as changes in the rate of growth of industry profits and the availability of equity finance.

Book Synopsis Mastering the Dynamics of Innovation by : James Utterback
Download or read book Mastering the Dynamics of Innovation written by James Utterback and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Explores how innovation transforms industries, suggesting a strategic model to help firms to adjust to ever-shifting market dynamics. Understanding and adapting to innovation -- 'at once the creator and destroyer of industries and corporations' -- is essential with increasing fragmentation and foreign competition, and the consequent demand for high cost-value and globally appealing products. Business cycles and population ecology (which focuses on linkages between survival, population density of firms, and size and growth of the market) are used to explain the surprising amount of movemente that characterizes even the largest, most established firms. The history of innovation is explored through a diverse variety of industries -- from typewriters to incandescent light bulbs to ice. These accounts show that entrepreneur-inventors and innovative firms tend to become conservative and defensive as the market expands beyond their original concept; this is the point at which it becomes difficult for the firm, originally innovative, to keep up with market shifts. Following these trends, organizations are either organic or mechanistic. Organic firms operate in an uncertain environment, so that individuals must collaborate on frequent adjustments in a limited hierarchy with a rich flow of communication. Mechanistic organizations, on the other hand, are characterized by rigid coordination that establishes consistent routines, especially following the advent of a successful corporate innovation. Firms must accept the inevitability of change by valuing innovation even above past success; one of management's most essential roles is to find a balance between supporting new and established innovations. Book Synopsis Dynamics of Long-Life Assets by : Stefan N. Grösser
Download or read book Dynamics of Long-Life Assets written by Stefan N. Grösser and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-05-10 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is published under a CC BY-NC 4.0 license. The editors present essential methods and tools to support a holistic approach to the challenge of system upgrades and innovation in the context of high-value products and services. The approach presented here is based on three main pillars: an adaptation mechanism based on a broad understanding of system dependencies; efficient use of system knowledge through involvement of actors throughout the process; and technological solutions to enable efficient actor communication and information handling. The book provides readers with a better understanding of the factors that influence decisions, and put forward solutions to facilitate the rapid adaptation to changes in the business environment and customer needs through intelligent upgrade interventions. Further, it examines a number of sample cases from various contexts including car manufacturing, utilities, shipping and the furniture industry. The book offers a valuable resource for both academics and practitioners interested in the upgrading of capital-intensive products and services. “The work performed in the project “Use-It-Wisely (UiW)” significantly contributes towards a collaborative way of working. Moreover, it offers comprehensive system modelling to identify business opportunities and develop technical solutions within industrial value networks. The developed UiW-framework fills a void and offers a great opportunity. The naval construction sector of small passenger vessels, for instance, is one industry that can benefit.” Nikitas Nikitakos, Professor at University of the Aegean, Department of Shipping, Trade, and Transport, Greece. “Long-life assets are crucial for both the future competiveness and sustainability of society. Make wrong choices now and you are locked into a wrong system for a long time. Make the right choices now and society can prosper. This book gives important information about how manufacturers can make right choices.” Arnold Tukker, Scientific director, Institute of Environmental Sciences (CML), Leiden University, and senior scientist, TNO.
