Book excerpt: In this "eloquent debut," a young Australian woman unable to find her footing in the world begins to break down when the emergencies she hears working as a 911 operator and the troubles within her own life gradually blur together, forcing her to grapple with how the past has shaped her present (Publishers Weekly). Drifting after her final year in college, a young writer begins working part-time as an emergency dispatch operator in Sydney. Over the course of an eight-hour shift, she is dropped into hundreds of crises, hearing only pieces of each. Callers report car accidents and violent spouses and homes caught up in flame. The work becomes monotonous: answer, transfer, repeat. And yet the stress of listening to far-off disasters seeps into her personal life, and she begins walking home with keys in hand, ready to fight off men disappointed by what they find in neighboring bars. During her free time, she gets black-out drunk, hooks up with strangers, and navigates an affair with an ex-lover whose girlfriend is in their circle of friends. Two centuries earlier, her great-great-great-great-grandfather--the British explorer John Oxley--traversed the wilderness of Australia in search of water. Oxley never found the inland sea, but the myth was taken up by other men, and over the years, search parties walked out into the desert, dying as they tried to find it. Interweaving a woman's self-destructive unraveling with the gradual worsening of the climate crisis, The Inland Sea is charged with unflinching insight into our age of anxiety. At a time when wildfires have swept an entire continent, this novel asks what refuge and comfort looks like in a constant state of emergency.

Book excerpt: Armchair fiction presents extra-large paperback editions of the best in classic science fiction novels. Richard Tooker's "Inland Deep, Illustrated Edition" is the eighteenth installment of our "Lost World-Lost Race Classics" series. Clues from the forgotten past led them to an unknown world of terror¿ Philanthropist Roger Anson loved financing trips for scientific advancement, and Bob Langtree, a museum curator and field investigator, loved scientific expeditions. As luck would have it, information came to Roger regarding the mysterious Comanche Caves. Strange sounds-vaguely human-had been heard there; and most interesting of all, a footprint had been found-a footprint only part human! So off Roger and Bob went, on an exploration into the deepest recesses of the Comanche caves. And sure enough, deep inside they found prints-like the tracks of a giant frog! These strange prints soon led to an underground world-a fantastic new realm filled with monstrous beasts, weird phenomena, and home to a previously undiscovered race of semi-intelligent beings. But in the end, their expedition to break new scientific barriers became a desperate race for survival.

Book excerpt: The current high demand for fish and increased awareness of the role of the environment in supporting human well being has led to a situation where attitudes to inland water resources are changing rapidly. Trends in resource use and environmental impact are very evident in inland waters which are particularly vulnerable as they act as collectors of all the activities occurring in their basins and rank as some of the most endangered ecosystems in the world. The principle changes influencing the evolution of the aquatic resource for fisheries are described in this book, which has been compiled for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

Book Synopsis Imaging Spectrometry by : Freek D. van der Meer
Download or read book Imaging Spectrometry written by Freek D. van der Meer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-07-27 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A significant step forward in the world of earth observation was made with the development of imaging spectrometry. Imaging spectrometers measure reflected solar radiance from the earth in many narrow spectral bands. Such a spectroscopical imaging system is capable of detecting subtle absorption bands in the reflectance spectra and measure the reflectance spectra of various objects with a very high accuracy. As a result, imaging spectrometry enables a better identification of objects at the earth surface and a better quantification of the object properties than can be achieved by traditional earth observation sensors such as Landsat TM and SPOT. The various chapters in the book present the concepts of imaging spectrometry by discussing the underlying physics and the analytical image processing techniques. The second part of the book presents in detail a wide variety of applications of these new techniques ranging from mineral identification, mapping of expansive soils, land degradation, agricultural crops, natural vegetation and surface water quality.
