Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pope John Paul II speaks in "Ecclesia in Africa" (1995) of the necessity for the church to inculturate itself into the cultures of the African peoples. This book shows what makes inculturation in Africa a necessity. Against the background of a socio-empircal study it becomes understandable, why in the history of mission, from a European-religious perspective much remains misunderstood and causes distress until today. The author focuses on the 'way of Inculturation" showing how a "rooting of the Gospel in Africa" could be possible and sustainable. Book excerpt: "When I feed the poor, they call me a saint; when I ask why they are poor, they call me a communist." ** This quotation given by the protagonist Dom Helder Camara is also the motto of this book. The book shows Camara's life from his childhood over the first pastoral steps up to him as the educationalist, bureaucrat and politician. As an archbishop for twenty years in Olinda and Recife Helder Camara is therefore referred to as "Man of the people in Recife". The "brother of the poor" criticised the political system in his motherland Brasil openly and by this risked his life more than once. His international reputation is still actual: moving theology of liberation, Camara provoces effects in Church and society life all over the world.

Book excerpt: Although Africa is today often seen, because of its large number of Christians, as the future hope of the Church, a closer examination of African Christianity, however, shows that the Christian faith has not taken deep root in Africa. Many Africans today declare themselves to be Christians but still remain followers of their traditional African religions, especially in matters concerning the inner dimensions of their lives. It is evident that, in strictly personal matters relating to such issues as passage rites and crises, most Africans turn to their African traditional religions. As an incarnational faith, part of the history of Christianity has been its encounter with other cultures and its becoming deeply rooted in some of these cultures. The central question remains: Why has the Christian faith not taken deep root in Africa? This volume is concerned with answering this question.

Book excerpt: Associations in the Greco-Roman World provides students and scholars with a clear and readable resource for greater understanding of the social, cultural, and religious life across the ancient Mediterranean. The authors provide new translations of inscriptions and papyri from hundreds of associations, alongside descriptions of more than two dozen archaeological remains of building sites. Complemented by a substantial annotated bibliography and accompanying images, this sourcebook fills many gaps and allows for future exploration in studies of the Greco-Roman religious world, particularly the nature of Judean and Christian groups at that time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Between the 1870s and the 1930s competing European powers carved out and consolidated colonies in Melanesia, the most culturally diverse region of the world. As part of this process, great assemblages of ethnographic artefacts were made by a range of collectors whose diversity is captured in this volume. The contributors to this tightly-integrated volume take these collectors, and the collecting institutions, as the departure point for accounts that look back at the artefact-producing societies and their interaction with the collectors, but also forward to the fate of the collections in metropolitan museums, as the artefacts have been variously exhibited, neglected, re-conceived as indigenous heritage, or repatriated. In doing this, the contributors raise issues of current interest in anthropology, Pacific history, art history, museology, and material culture.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nothing has so radically transformed the world as the distinction between true and false religion. In this nuanced consideration of his own controversial Moses the Egyptian, renowned Egyptologist Jan Assmann answers his critics, extending and building upon ideas from his previous book. Maintaining that it was indeed the Moses of the Hebrew Bible who introduced the true-false distinction in a permanent and revolutionary form, Assmann reiterates that the price of this monotheistic revolution has been the exclusion, as paganism and heresy, of everything deemed incompatible with the truth it proclaims. This exclusion has exploded time and again into violence and persecution, with no end in sight. Here, for the first time, Assmann traces the repeated attempts that have been made to do away with this distinction since the early modern period. He explores at length the notions of primary versus secondary religions, of "counter-religions," and of book religions versus cultic religions. He also deals with the entry of ethics into religion's very core. Informed by the debate his own work has generated, he presents a compelling lesson in the fluidity of cultural identity and beliefs.
