Book Synopsis Camden After the Fall by : Howard Gillette, Jr.
Download or read book Camden After the Fall written by Howard Gillette, Jr. and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2011-06-03 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What prevents cities whose economies have been devastated by the flight of human and monetary capital from returning to self-sufficiency? Looking at the cumulative effects of urban decline in the classic post-industrial city of Camden, New Jersey, historian Howard Gillette, Jr., probes the interaction of politics, economic restructuring, and racial bias to evaluate contemporary efforts at revitalization. In a sweeping analysis, Gillette identifies a number of related factors to explain this phenomenon, including the corrosive effects of concentrated poverty, environmental injustice, and a political bias that favors suburban amenity over urban reconstruction. Challenging popular perceptions that poor people are responsible for the untenable living conditions in which they find themselves, Gillette reveals how the effects of political decisions made over the past half century have combined with structural inequities to sustain and prolong a city's impoverishment. Even the most admirable efforts to rebuild neighborhoods through community development and the reinvention of downtowns as tourist destinations are inadequate solutions, Gillette argues. He maintains that only a concerted regional planning response—in which a city and suburbs cooperate—is capable of achieving true revitalization. Though such a response is mandated in Camden as part of an unprecedented state intervention, its success is still not assured, given the legacy of outside antagonism to the city and its residents. Deeply researched and forcefully argued, Camden After the Fall chronicles the history of the post-industrial American city and points toward a sustained urban revitalization strategy for the twenty-first century.

Book excerpt: When I began writing this book (October 2010), I resided in the northeastern part of North Carolina, in Barco, a big city approximately forty-eight miles west on Highway US 158 of the Outer Banks (OBX), NC. I have since than moved (March 2012) to Harlem, GA, approximately eight miles on Highway US 78 west of Fort Gordon, GA, where I reunited and remarried my spouse Dorothy on September 15, 2012. I'm currently waiting to hear from the presidential pardon attorney's decision to be made on my tireless effort in exonerating my wrongful conviction as a result of the miscarriage of justice and/or prosecutorial misconduct malicious act against me. I also plan to continue in pursuing my masters of science in criminal justice with Troy University, for which I have already received a Certificate of Acceptance. Hopefully, those studies will help me to better understand the American jurisprudence as it relates to our "We the People" Constitution rights. God be the glory!

Book Synopsis Social Justice and the City by : Nik Heynen
Download or read book Social Justice and the City written by Nik Heynen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-06-09 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This special collection aims to offer insight into the state of geography on questions of social justice and urban life. While using social justice and the city as our starting point may signal inspiration from Harvey’s (1973) book of the same name, the task of examining the emergence of this concept has revealed the deep influence of grassroots urban uprisings of the late 1960s, earlier and contemporary meditations on our urban worlds (Jacobs, 1961, 1969; Lefebvre, 1974; Massey and Catalano, 1978) as well as its enduring significance built upon by many others for years to come. Laws (1994) noted how geographers came to locate social justice struggles in the city through research that examined the ways in which material conditions contributed to poverty and racial and gender inequity, as well as how emergent social movements organized to reshape urban spaces across diverse engagements including the U.S. Civil Rights Movement, anti-war protests, feminist and LGBTQ activism, the American Indian Movement, and disability access. This book originally published as a special issue of Annals of the American Association of Geographers.
