Book Synopsis Nonlinear Diffusion Equations by : Zhuoqun Wu
Download or read book Nonlinear Diffusion Equations written by Zhuoqun Wu and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2001 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonlinear diffusion equations, an important class of parabolic equations, come from a variety of diffusion phenomena which appear widely in nature. They are suggested as mathematical models of physical problems in many fields, such as filtration, phase transition, biochemistry and dynamics of biological groups. In many cases, the equations possess degeneracy or singularity. The appearance of degeneracy or singularity makes the study more involved and challenging. Many new ideas and methods have been developed to overcome the special difficulties caused by the degeneracy and singularity, which enrich the theory of partial differential equations. This book provides a comprehensive presentation of the basic problems, main results and typical methods for nonlinear diffusion equations with degeneracy. Some results for equations with singularity are touched upon.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the past several decades, the study of free boundary problems has been a very active subject of research occurring in a variety of applied sciences. What these problems have in common is their formulation in terms of suitably posed initial and boundary value problems for nonlinear partial differential equations. Such problems arise, for example, in the mathematical treatment of the processes of heat conduction, filtration through porous media, flows of non-Newtonian fluids, boundary layers, chemical reactions, semiconductors, and so on. The growing interest in these problems is reflected by the series of meetings held under the title "Free Boundary Problems: Theory and Applications" (Ox ford 1974, Pavia 1979, Durham 1978, Montecatini 1981, Maubuisson 1984, Irsee 1987, Montreal 1990, Toledo 1993, Zakopane 1995, Crete 1997, Chiba 1999). From the proceedings of these meetings, we can learn about the different kinds of mathematical areas that fall within the scope of free boundary problems. It is worth mentioning that the European Science Foundation supported a vast research project on free boundary problems from 1993 until 1999. The recent creation of the specialized journal Interfaces and Free Boundaries: Modeling, Analysis and Computation gives us an idea of the vitality of the subject and its present state of development. This book is a result of collaboration among the authors over the last 15 years.

Book Synopsis Nonlinear Diffusion Equations and Their Equilibrium States, 3 by : N.G Lloyd
Download or read book Nonlinear Diffusion Equations and Their Equilibrium States, 3 written by N.G Lloyd and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 567 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonlinear diffusion equations have held a prominent place in the theory of partial differential equations, both for the challenging and deep math ematical questions posed by such equations and the important role they play in many areas of science and technology. Examples of current inter est are biological and chemical pattern formation, semiconductor design, environmental problems such as solute transport in groundwater flow, phase transitions and combustion theory. Central to the theory is the equation Ut = ~cp(U) + f(u). Here ~ denotes the n-dimensional Laplacian, cp and f are given functions and the solution is defined on some domain n x [0, T] in space-time. FUn damental questions concern the existence, uniqueness and regularity of so lutions, the existence of interfaces or free boundaries, the question as to whether or not the solution can be continued for all time, the asymptotic behavior, both in time and space, and the development of singularities, for instance when the solution ceases to exist after finite time, either through extinction or through blow up.

Book excerpt: VI SOCRATES: I think that we ought to stress that we will write only about things that we have first hand experience in, in a coherent way that will be useful to engineers and other scientists and stressing the formulation without being too mathematical. We should write with integrity and honesty, giving reference to other authors where reference is due, but avoiding mentioning everybody just to be certain that our book is widely advertised. Above all, the book should be clear and useful. PLATO: I think we should include a good discussion of fundamental ideas, of how integral equations are formed, pointing out that they are like two dimensional shadows of three dimensional objects, ... SOCRATES: Stop there! Remember you are not 'the' Plato! PLATO: Sorry, I was carried away. ARISTOTLE: I think that the book should have many applications so that the reader can learn by looking at them how to use the method. SOCRATES: I agree. But we should be careful. It is easy to include many illustra tions and examples in a book in order to disguise its meagre contents. All examples should be relevant. ARISTOTLE: And we should also include a full computer program to give the reader if so he wishes, a working experience of the technique.

This book was released on 2004-05-24 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike the classical Sturm theorems on the zeros of solutions of second-order ODEs, Sturm's evolution zero set analysis for parabolic PDEs did not attract much attention in the 19th century, and, in fact, it was lost or forgotten for almost a century. Briefly revived by Plya in the 1930's and rediscovered in part several times since, it was not un
Book Synopsis Symmetries and Differential Equations by : George W. Bluman
Download or read book Symmetries and Differential Equations written by George W. Bluman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major portion of this book discusses work which has appeared since the publication of the book Similarity Methods for Differential Equations, Springer-Verlag, 1974, by the first author and J.D. Cole. The present book also includes a thorough and comprehensive treatment of Lie groups of tranformations and their various uses for solving ordinary and partial differential equations. No knowledge of group theory is assumed. Emphasis is placed on explicit computational algorithms to discover symmetries admitted by differential equations and to construct solutions resulting from symmetries. This book should be particularly suitable for physicists, applied mathematicians, and engineers. Almost all of the examples are taken from physical and engineering problems including those concerned with heat conduction, wave propagation, and fluid flows. A preliminary version was used as lecture notes for a two-semester course taught by the first author at the University of British Columbia in 1987-88 to graduate and senior undergraduate students in applied mathematics and physics. Chapters 1 to 4 encompass basic material. More specialized topics are covered in Chapters 5 to 7.

Book Synopsis Nonlinear PDE’s in Condensed Matter and Reactive Flows by : Henri Berestycki
Download or read book Nonlinear PDE’s in Condensed Matter and Reactive Flows written by Henri Berestycki and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nonlinear partial differential equations abound in modern physics. The problems arising in these fields lead to fascinating questions and, at the same time, progress in understanding the mathematical structures is of great importance to the models. Nevertheless, activity in one of the approaches is not always sufficiently in touch with developments in the other field. The book presents the joint efforts of mathematicians and physicists involved in modelling reactive flows, in particular superconductivity and superfluidity. Certain contributions are fundamental to an understanding of such cutting-edge research topics as rotating Bose-Einstein condensates, Kolmogorov-Zakharov solutions for weak turbulence equations, and the propagation of fronts in heterogeneous media.
