Book excerpt: For a measurement of the diffusion constant D from the decay of the fundamental mode only, optimal dimensions of the pile are given, leading to a fast decay of the higher modes. Another method is discussed which makes use also of higher modes. Evaluation formulas and optimal pile dimensions for this method are derived. The amplitudes of the normal modes are calculated for different initial distributions of the neutrons by means of the Fermi age theory. The error introduced using Fermi age theory was fixed moderator atoms for the slowing down process down to thermal energy is estimated. In one instance, for a simple initial distribution of thermal neutrons, the neutron density was calculated as a function of space and time. The data obtained were used to check the accuracy of some approximate evaluation formulas derived here.

Book Synopsis Materials Research Using Cold Neutrons At Pulsed Neutron Sources by : Chun Keung Loong
Download or read book Materials Research Using Cold Neutrons At Pulsed Neutron Sources written by Chun Keung Loong and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1999-04-29 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The applications of the use of cold neutrons for condensed matter research at accelerator-based spallation sources are less well-known than that of the use of cold neutrons at reactor sources. This book represents the outcome of the first international workshop on “Materials Research Using Cold Neutrons at Pulsed Sources”. It consists of overviews of the present status and future trends in research opportunities using cold neutrons, as well as topical papers focusing on the areas of small-angle neutron scattering, reflectivity and spectroscopic studies of a rich variety of materials, from adsorbed molecules to thin films to coal to metallic glasses. These papers will benefit researchers who are interested in the characterization of microscopic properties of advanced materials.

Book Synopsis Neutron Generators for Analytical Purposes by : International Atomic Energy Agency
Download or read book Neutron Generators for Analytical Purposes written by International Atomic Energy Agency and published by IAEA Radiation Technology Repo. This book was released on 2012 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication addresses recent developments in neutron generator (NG) technology. It presents information on compact instruments with high neutron yield to be used for neutron activation analysis (NAA) and prompt gamma neutron activation analysis in combination with high count rate spectrometers. Traditional NGs have been shown to be effective for applications including borehole logging, homeland security, nuclear medicine and the on-line analysis of aluminium, coal and cement. Pulsed fast thermal neutron analysis, as well as tagged and timed neutron analysis, are additional techniques which can be applied using NG. Furthermore, NG can effectively be used for elemental analysis and is also effective for analysis of hidden materials by neutron radiography. Useful guidelines for developing NG based research laboratories are also provided in this publication.
