Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inigo Jones (1573-1652) is widely acknowledged to have been England's most important architect. As court designer to the Stuart kings James I and Charles I, he is credited with introducing the classical language of architecture to the country. He famously traveled to Italy and studied firsthand the buildings of the Italian masters, particularly admiring those by Andrea Palladio. Much less well known is the profound influence of native British arts and crafts on Jones's architecture. Likewise, his hostility to the more opulent forms of Italian architecture he saw on his travels has largely gone unnoted. This book examines both of these overlooked issues. Vaughan Hart identifies well-established links between the classical column and the crown prior to Jones, in early Stuart masques, processions, heraldry, paintings, and poems. He goes on to discuss Jones's preference for a masculine and unaffected architecture, demonstrating that this plain style was consistent with the Puritan artistic sensitivities of Stuart England. For the first time, the work of Inigo Jones is understood in its national religious and political context. Published for the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Inigo Jones and Wren: Or the Rise and Decline of Modern Architecture in England I have endeavoured, I hope with success, to unravel the history of Inigo Jones's two great designs for Whitehall, which have so completely puzzled previous writers, and I have endeavoured also to apply similar principles to the elucidation of the different schemes made by Wren for St. Paul's. Book excerpt: The spread of Renaissance culture in England coincided with the birth of the profession of architecture, whose practitioners soon became superior to simple builders in social standing and perceived intellectual prowess. This stimulating book, which focuses in particular on the scientist, mathematician, and architect Sir Christopher Wren, explores the extent to which this new professional identity was based on expertise in the mathematical arts and sciences. Featuring drawings, instruments, paintings, and other examples of the material culture of English architecture, the book discusses the role of mathematics in architectural design and building technology. It begins with architectural drawing in the 16th century, moves to large-scale technical drawing under Henry VIII, considers Inigo Jones and his royal buildings and Christopher Wren and the dome of St. Paul's, and concludes with the architectural education of George III. Interweaving text and visual image, the book investigates the boundaries between art and science in architecture--the most artistic of the sciences and the most scientific of the arts.
