Book excerpt: Excerpt from Inheritance of Waxy Endosperm in Maize While the observed percentage of waxy seeds for the 66 ears is a very close approximation to the expected percentage, we have seen that the two major groups, waxy X horny and-horny X waxy, that make up this total, differ from each other by an amount that would be expected to occur as the result of chance but once in 116 times. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Development and Inheritance of a Defective Endosperm in Maize The Development and Inheritance of a Defective Endosperm in Maize* During the past two decades extensive genetic investiga tions have been carried on with maize. This is owing partly to the economic importance of the crop and partly to the ease with which pollination may be controlled. It resembles its near' relative, the embryo, in its sexual origin, but differs from the latter in structure, in capacity for continued development, and in ability to reproduce. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Inheritance in Maize The investigations reported in this paper were begun in the Spring of the year 1905. During the first four years the work was conducted at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station. Since the fall of 1909, it has been carried on both there and at the Bussey Institution of Harvard University. Strictly speaking the researches comprise more than five years' work, for several of the pure varieties used as parent stocks had been selfed for the two previous years, so that a number of crosses were made in 1905 with full assurance that as far as most of the visible characters were concerned, the parent strains were pure. There was some further advantage gained in that the' writers have been interested in experimental maize breeding since 1900, for without this experience the probable error of the results would be greatly increased. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heredity of a Maize Variation Albinistic mutations are not uncommon in both plants and animals, and many white varieties are supposed to have originated in this way, but so far as known this is the first instance of a mutation of this kind affecting the endosperm of maize. The phenomenon is believed to be of interest, since it suggests one manner in which color diversity in maize may arise. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Further Experiments on Inheritance in Maize This paper is a report on the inheritance of certain differences in the endosperm of various maize races that have been made the basis of a division into the subspecies everta, indurate, indentata and amylacea. To these investigations, a genetic study of the shape of seed which characterizes the socalled rice pop corns is added. The writers take pleasure in acknowledging the efficient aid of Mr. A. F. Schultze, assistant botanist at the Connecticut Agricultural College, and Mr. C. D. Hubbell, assistant at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, in the considerable amount of field work involved. Material And Methods. The parental races used in the crosses were self-fertilized for several years before any hybrids were made, and are believed to have been homozygous for the characters studied. The material from which these races originated was described in a previous publication (See East and Hayes, 1911), but the following additional points regarding it should be noted: 1. Zea mays everta. The pop corns. No. 64. White rice pop. The white pop is one of the lines which has been produced from No. 23, (East & Hayes, 1911). Book excerpt: The Rice Genetics Collection of past symposia and other selected literature contains nearly 4,400 pages of searchable information on rice genetics and cytogenetics published by the IRRI and its partners since 1964. In addition to the five genetics symposia held at 5-year intervals since 1985, the collection contains classic publications that kicked off significant reporting on these subjects in the early 1960s. This collection is a comprehensive and historical documentation on the subject of rice genetics, spanning 45 years of research and scholarly work. Published in 1990, Rice Genetics II contains 65 chapters from various contributors on topics dealing with rice genetic research, including varietal differentiation and evolution; genetic markers, linkage groups, and aneuploids; genetics of stress tolerance, morphological and physiological traits, and disease and insect resistance; tissue and cell culture; molecular genetics of cytoplasmic and nuclear genomes, rice proteins, and disease resistance; RFLP analysis of rice genomes; and transformation techniques.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maize is one of the world’s highest value crops, with a multibillion dollar annual contribution to agriculture. The great adaptability and high yields available for maize as a food, feed and forage crop have led to its current production on over 140 million hectares worldwide, with acreage continuing to grow at the expense of other crops. In terms of tons of cereal grain produced worldwide, maize has been number one for many years. Moreover, maize is expanding its contribution to non-food uses, including as a major source of ethanol as a fuel additive or fuel alternative in the US. In addition, maize has been at the center of the transgenic plant controversy, serving as the first food crop with released transgenic varieties. By 2008, maize will have its genome sequence released, providing the sequence of the first average-size plant genome (the four plant genomes that are now sequenced come from unusually tiny genomes) and of the most complex genome sequenced from any organism. Among plant science researchers, maize has the second largest and most productive research community, trailing only the Arabidopsis community in scale and significance. At the applied research and commercial improvement levels, maize has no peers in agriculture, and consists of thousands of contributors worthwhile. A comprehensive book on the biology of maize has not been published. The "Handbook of Maize: the Genetics and Genomics" center on the past, present and future of maize as a model for plant science research and crop improvement. The books include brief, focused chapters from the foremost maize experts and feature a succinct collection of informative images representing the maize germplasm collection.
