During the first four years the work was conducted at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station. Since the fall of 1909, it has been carried on both there and at the Bussey Institution of Harvard University. Strictly speaking the researches comprise more than five years' work, for several of the pure varieties used as parent stocks had been selfed for the two previous years, so that a number of crosses were made in 1905 with full assurance that as far as most of the visible characters were concerned, the parent strains were pure. There was some further advantage gained in that the' writers have been interested in experimental maize breeding since 1900, for without this experience the probable error of the results would be greatly increased. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Further Experiments on Inheritance in Maize This paper is a report on the inheritance of certain differences in the endosperm of various maize races that have been made the basis of a division into the subspecies everta, indurate, indentata and amylacea. To these investigations, a genetic study of the shape of seed which characterizes the socalled rice pop corns is added. The writers take pleasure in acknowledging the efficient aid of Mr. A. F. Schultze, assistant botanist at the Connecticut Agricultural College, and Mr. C. D. Hubbell, assistant at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station, in the considerable amount of field work involved. Material And Methods. The parental races used in the crosses were self-fertilized for several years before any hybrids were made, and are believed to have been homozygous for the characters studied. The material from which these races originated was described in a previous publication (See East and Hayes, 1911), but the following additional points regarding it should be noted: 1. Zea mays everta. The pop corns. No. 64. White rice pop. The white pop is one of the lines which has been produced from No. 23, (East & Hayes, 1911).
