Book excerpt: An intense night takes an unexpected turn as the Niantic Project Laboratory located inside of CERN is finally shuttered. But the mysterious origins of Exotic Matter, and its potential for mankind, are too important for the corporations interested in exploiting it, and they converge on what was once the NIA's prized project, intent on getting their hands on the remaining researchers at the facility. However, what starts as a military operation quickly takes a turn into the unknown as other dangerous players with their own agendas also arrive on the scene, intent on turning the chaos to their own advantage, and redefining the future of Exotic Matter.

Chapeau must come to terms with his role in two tragedies: The death of Carrie Campbell, a brave, visionary woman who sacrificed herself to save human civilization from self-destruction, and the takeover of a human mind by an AI that he helped create. Chapeau walks away, leaving the duty of uncovering the truth about Exotic Matter to the mysterious Verity Seke, and there’s much to investigate: An ancient society that has been protecting the secrets of XM-induced immortality, the resurrection of an Enlightened leader, and a desperate movement to save humanity from embarking on a path to its own destruction. From the efforts to resurrect Roland Jarvis in 13MAGNUS to Hank Johnson’s Recursion, each document from Verity Seke’s daily investigation is presented here, in Volume 2 of The Niantic Project Files.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to 1M 2003, the eighth in a series of the premier international technical conference in this field. As IT management has become mission critical to the economies of the developed world, our technical program has grown in relevance, strength and quality. Over the next few years, leading IT organizations will gradually move from identifying infrastructure problems to providing business services via automated, intelligent management systems. To be successful, these future management systems must provide global scalability, for instance, to support Grid computing and large numbers of pervasive devices. In Grid environments, organizations can pool desktops and servers, dynamically creating a virtual environment with huge processing power, and new management challenges. As the number, type, and criticality of devices connected to the Internet grows, new innovative solutions are required to address this unprecedented scale and management complexity. The growing penetration of technologies, such as WLANs, introduces new management challenges, particularly for performance and security. Management systems must also support the management of business processes and their supporting technology infrastructure as integrated entities. They will need to significantly reduce the amount of adventitious, bootless data thrown at consoles, delivering instead a cogent view of the system state, while leaving the handling of lower level events to self-managed, multifarious systems and devices. There is a new emphasis on "autonomic" computing, building systems that can perform routine tasks without administrator intervention and take prescient actions to rapidly recover from potential software or hardware failures.

Book excerpt: Magi is the story of a man who believes that he understands the world he lives in and rejects ideas about "Alien Conspiracies", and sets out to prove his own assumption that cattle mutilations in the Colorado Rockies are the actions of a secret government program that is testing biological agents for the development of weapons. His life converges with other people who are firmly entrenched in the world of alien/human interaction and his world view is changed forever as he comes face to face with this new reality that he stumbles upon. The complexity of the problem he discovers is that layers of covert groups are designed to watchdog each other and take necessary actions in order to maintain stability in a world that must be kept secret at all costs. Once he loses the simplicity of what he thought was once the world, he becomes caught between choices. Yet there are deeper insidious problems plaguing the world and these people in these various groups. It isn't clear about who controls what, what the aliens want or even who they are. Why have they not annihilated us and why do they not help us? These ideas and more keep the players firmly locked in a Leontius' Eyes syndrome, unable to tear their selves away and choose how to accept what is so blatantly obvious to the senses and the mind. Out of a central incident arises a clarity of a different kind; that all have been drawn together at this moment to work in concert to support the stasis of this secret existence. The question remains as to whether it has all been a mass manipulation at the whim of a single entity, or if this has been necessary for the continued existence of mankind in general.

Today’s networks are evolving rapidly, and there are several developing areas and applications. These include heterogeneous networking supported by recent technological advances in power wireless communications, along with silicon integration of various functionalities such as sensing, communications, intelligence and actuations, which is emerging as a critically important disruptive computer class based on a new platform, networking structure and interface that enables novel, low-cost and high-volume applications. However, implemeting these applications has sometimes been difficult due to interconnection problems. As such, different networks need to collaborate, and wired and next-generation wireless systems need to be integrated in order to develop high-performance computing solutions to address the problems arising from these networks’ complexities. This ebook presents the latest research findings, as well as theoretical and practical perspectives on the innovative methods and development techniques related to the emerging areas of information networking and applications

Book excerpt: UNDERWATER INSPECTION AND REPAIR FOR OFFSHORE STRUCTURES Benefit from a much-needed, up-to-date handbook on underwater inspection and repair processes and technologies Underwater Inspection and Repair for Offshore Structures fills a gap in the literature to provide an overview of the inspection and repair processes for both steel and concrete offshore structures. Authors and noted experts on the topic John V. Sharp and Gerhard Esdal guide readers through the reasons why inspection and repair are performed and how both are linked to the management of structural integrity, statutory requirements, and various types of damage. The book addresses critical topics, including the execution and planning of inspection and repair, the tools and methods used, and their deployment underwater. The authors put particular focus on steel and concrete offshore oil and gas installations, but the content is also applicable to the substructures of offshore wind turbines. Underwater Inspection and Repair for Offshore Structures is complementary to the authors’ book Ageing and Life Extension of Offshore Structures, also from Wiley. This important book: Covers current inspection and monitoring techniques to evaluate existing structures Includes coverage of robotic (ROV) inspection and repair methods Provides an overview of repair and maintenance techniques applicable to the splash‑zone and underwater operations Written for engineers, designers, and safety auditors working with offshore structures. Underwater Inspection and Repair for Offshore Structures is a comprehensive resource for understanding how to effectively inspect and repair these vulnerable structures.

Book excerpt: This book reviews the challenges of all-optical and wireless networks for the future Internet, with a focus on cross-layer design and optimization. Features: presents a thorough introduction to major networking modes and their effect on Internet development; proposes a new structure favorable for all-optical packet switching; discusses a new quality of service (QoS) provisioning approach, which overcomes the scalability problem of IntServ and the coarse QoS granularity of DiffServ; describes the end-to-end arguments in Internet design, before investigating a solution to congestion control problems in multi-hop wireless and all-optical networks; examines how to exploit multiple-input-multiple-output technology to improve network performance in centralized wireless networks; surveys green networking strategies from a quantitative perspective; suggests a strategic vision for possible developments of network technology for the future Internet.
