Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres (1780 –1867) was a French Neoclassical painter. Although he considered himself to be a painter of history in the tradition of Nicolas Poussin and Jacques-Louis David, by the end of his life it was Ingres's portraits, both painted and drawn, that were recognized as his greatest legacy. Ingres is a puzzling artist and his career is full of contradictions. Yet more than most artists he was obsessed by a restricted number of themes and returned to the same subject again and again over a long period of years. He was a bourgeois with the limitations of a bourgeois mentality but as Baudelaire remarked, his finest works 'are the product of a deeply sensuous nature'. The central contradiction of his career is that although he was held up as the guardian of classical rules and precepts, it is his personal obsessions and mannerisms that make him such a great artist. His technique as a painter was academically unimpeachable. A man profoundly respectful of the past, he assumed the role of a guardian of academic orthodoxy against the ascendant Romantic style represented by his nemesis Eugène Delacroix. His exemplars, he once explained, were "the great masters which flourished in that century of glorious memory when Raphael set the eternal and incontestable bounds of the sublime in art ... I am thus a conservator of good doctrine, and not an innovator." Nevertheless, modern opinion has tended to regard Ingres and the other Neoclassicists of his era as embodying the Romantic spirit of his time, while his expressive distortions of form and space make him an important precursor of modern art.

Book excerpt: An exploration of the fascinating parallels and differences between Picasso's Woman with a Book and Ingres's Madame Moitessier This publication examines, in detail, two extraordinary interrelated works: Picasso's Woman with a Book (1932) and Ingres's Madame Moitessier (1844-56). Each painting is explored in depth, illuminating the parallels and differences between the artists' techniques and creative ambitions. The first essay tells the story of the twelve-year gestation of Ingres's Madame Moitessier, focusing on the role of drawings in the elaboration of the composition, and of the sitter herself in determining how she was to be presented. The second essay traces the development of Picasso's Woman with a Book, among the most celebrated likenesses of the artist's young lover, Marie-Thérèse Walter. In contrast to Ingres's work, it was painted in just a day or two. The final essay explores, through these two works, the artists' shared interest in the relationship between nude and clothed bodies, revealing the depth of Picasso's engagement with Madame Moitessier, which motivates and animates Woman with a Book.

Book excerpt: Ingres is one of the most famous figures in all of French art. His Grande Odalisque, the Portrait of Caroline Riviere and the Turkish Bath have become icons of Western painting and are among the Louvre's biggest drawcards. Yet this most classical of 19th-century painters is also the most willfully complex: his work has always been a subject of heated debate and even today it offers a potent mix of the baffling and the fascinating. For Ingres was a multifaceted and sometimes contradictory artistic personality: a marvelous draftsman, passionately in love with nature; an infallible virtuoso of the portrait; a creator of limpid, monumental nudes; the inventor of delicious deformations; a resolute history painter; a rigid doctrinaire; an eclectic who could make capital out of the most varied traditions; an inspired artist; and a truly dreadful bourgeois. Out of this complexity emerge the richness and modernity of an oeuvre whose most strikingly attractive feature is its potent yet chaste eroticism. Book jacket.

Book excerpt: Between 1850 and 1900 fashion in Paris became an art form in itself, its designers inspired to creations of ever greater elegance and exoticism by the examples of the Old Masters and the popular painters of the day. But as art inspired fashion, so fashion served as a muse for art: painters from Courbet to Whistler, from Manet to Vuillard borrowed the poses of their models from the fashion plates of the day, and embraced the intimate scene - a walk in the garden, a visit from a friend - so typical of the genre. The dialogue between fashion and art is illustrated here by some 120 paintings - works by Ingres, Tissot, Renoir, Manet, Monet, Seurat and Degas among them - and a clutch of hitherto unpublished photographs from the recently discovered archive of Disderi.
