Book excerpt: Preface Adhesion is a phenomenon architects and civil engineers are not very familiar with. In other disciplines knowledge about surface properties and the background of bonding energies is also far from satisfactory; nevertheless there are many important· applications in concrete engineering, where adhesion is necessary for success and durability. These include: - coating and painting - repair of concrete surfaces - bonding of fresh to old concrete - crack injection - glueing of precast elements - glueing of steel to concrete, etc. In 1981 RILEM established the technical committee 52-RAC 'Resin Adherence to Concrete'. The main aims of the committee's work were - to collect research results and practical experiences - to initiate and coordinate research programs - to develop, on a scientific base, test methods for field and for laboratory purposes. One of the results of the committee's work is a state-of-the-art report, which will be presented orally as a General Report at the International Symposium ISAP '86, and will be printed either in the RILEM journal Materials and Structures or separately. Several test recommendations have been elaborated and will be prepared as drafts for the participants ofISAP '86. These are: - direct tensile test - pull-off test - direct shear test - slant shear test - four-point bending test - dynamic loading test - thermal compatibility test (two versions) - injectibility test.

Hence, the present ICOLD Bulletin 177 supersedes ICOLD Bulletin 126 (‘Roller-compacted concrete dams - State of the art and case histories’, published in 2003) and ICOLD Bulletin 75 (‘Roller-Compacted Concrete for Gravity Dams’ published in 1989). While roller-compacted concrete technology could have still been considered a new technology in 2003, it is now true to say that construction by roller-compaction has become the standard approach for large concrete gravity dams. This Bulletin addresses all aspects of the planning, design, construction and performance of RCC in dams. Mixture proportioning and quality control are discussed and a comprehensive listing of references is included. Many aspects of RCC in dams have become better understood since the publication of Bulletin No 126 and the present Bulletin contains less information on the particular approaches applied in different countries, but includes more comprehensive information particularly in relation to design, mixture proportioning and construction. With greater understanding, it has further been possible to highlight more definitively the requirements of successful RCC dams, as well as the pitfalls and difficulties that can be associated with RCC dam design and construction. Le Bulletin CIGB 177, intitulé « Barrages en Béton Compacté au Rouleau » présente les dernières avancées en matière de technologie du béton compacté au rouleau pour les barrages intégrant les progrès de la technologie BCR pour les barrages au cours des 15 dernières années, depuis que le dernier bulletin sur le sujet a été publié en 2003. Par conséquent, le bulletin 177 remplace le bulletin 126 (« Barrages en béton compacté au rouleau - Technique actuelle et exemples », publié en 2003) et le bulletin 75 (« Béton compacté au rouleau pour barrages-poids - Technique actuelle » publié en 1989). Alors que la technologie du BCR pourrait encore être considérée comme une nouvelle technologie en 2003, il est maintenant vrai de dire que la construction par le compactage par rouleaux est devenue l'approche standard pour les grands barrage-poids en béton. Book excerpt: The EEC's heavy dependence on imported raw materials, combined with insufficient priority given to recuperative technologies, provided twin incentives to convene the European Conference on Waste Management. The conference was also held in answer to a call for a serious interna tional forum to enable high calibre spokesmen to express their views on a diversity of vital interests. The ambitious objective was that such a melting pot would smooth the road to cohesive policies and purposeful action, especially in the field of waste recycling. Among the speakers there were several specialists ready to outline the state of the art of a variety of technical subjects. This range included aspects of packaging, hazardous waste, the utilisation of waste in agri culture, energy from waste, and waste paper. ~aper was to play a particularly serious role, because pulp and paper is the largest external commodity need by the EEC countries after oil. Speakers were to be drawn from all parts of the EEC, in the expectation that country-to-country comparisons would stimulate progress in specific areas. This hope was frequently realised. Well represented was the Environment and Consumer Protection Department of the Commission itself. It is this department that has been quietly setting the beginnings of a coherent policy for waste management for throughout the 250 million population Community for the past seven years.
