Book Synopsis Litigation and Settlement in a Game with Incomplete Information by : Wolfgang Ryll
Download or read book Litigation and Settlement in a Game with Incomplete Information written by Wolfgang Ryll and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 177 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We investigate a two-person game of litigation and settlement with incomplete information on one side. So far, various theoretical attempts have been made to answer the question of why some people choose not to resolve their disputes and instead go to court and incur litigation costs, even if bargaining leaves room for both parties to fare better when avoiding the conflict. We can distinguish between games which focus on strategic elements like games with incomplete information (see, for example, P'ng (1983), Samuelson (1982) and Schweizer (1989» and decision-theoretic models neglecting strategic elements (see, for example, Landes (1971) and Gould (1973». The single-person decision theory approach to litigation assumes litigants to have a subjective estimate of the likelihood that the plaintiff will win the action. Differing views on the probability of winning the court case help to explain the fraction of cases that actually go to trial. Among others, P'ng (1983) points out the shortcomings of the single-person decision theory approach which does not take into account, for example, the different fee systems in England and the U.S. and the differences in information conflicting parties may have. P'ng constructs a model of one-sided incomplete information where the settlement terms are given exogenously. Schweizer (1989), on the other hand, extends P'ng's model and allows for two-sided asymmetric information where the settlement terms are determined endogenously.
Book Synopsis Putting the Urban Poor on the Map by :
Download or read book Putting the Urban Poor on the Map written by and published by UN-HABITAT. This book was released on 2000 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This publication presents a methodology for participative informal settlement upgrading with the support of information technology, the result of research and development activities carried out by UNCHS (Habitat) and a group of partners. Examining a number of experiences in the field, and through direct support to specific tool development activities, Habitat aims to consolidate a wealth of practical and field experiences into a methodological framework. The methodology refers to the project preparation phase, including community involvement protocols, and the information management system related to it. This methodology should be seen as a practical reference framework for programme managers and officials involved in designing and managing settlement upgrading projects and should assist policy makers and external support agencies in policy formulation and resource allocation. It will also provide a technical background to the Global Campaigns for Secure Tenure and for Good Urban Governance that UNCHS (Habitat) is launching in the year 2000"--p. 3.

This book was released on 2013 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We discuss the implications of various models of settlement negotiations for the revelation or suppression of private information held by the parties. This information may be relevant to multiple audiences, including those involved in the instant lawsuit; other potential litigants that may subsequently make use of the information in their own suits against one of the parties; and more distant observers and users of the legal process. We also examine how rules of evidence and rules of civil procedure can sometimes result in different degrees of purposeful or (arguably) unintended information suppression.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imparting all the warmth and fragrance of an old-fashioned, turn-of-the-century kitchen, The Settlement Cook Book was originally devised as a cooking and homemaking primer for newly arrived immigrants. Filled with hundreds of recipes for good eating, this back-to-basics book is also good reading. A blend of hardy, old-fashioned dishes and simple recipes that will fit today's demanding lifestyles, the text covers everything from making roast chicken (with chestnut dressing) to the best way to dust a room. Clearly detailed, easy-to-read directions tell how to create such tasty fare as griddle cakes, shrimp Creole, and mulligatawny soup; cheese fondue, oyster a la poulette, and other Continental specialties; as well as ethnic foods such as gefilte fish and matzo ball soup. Sections on preserving, canning, and pickling are interspersed with quaint "lessons" on how to sterilize milk, build a fire, and discern fresh eggs from stale ones. A delightful culinary education from the days before convection ovens and "dream kitchens," The Settlement Cook Book is a treasury of Americana, a delightful sampling of cultural history that will enchant lovers of old cookbooks and well-prepared foods.
