Book Synopsis Automatic Architecture by : Sean Keller
Download or read book Automatic Architecture written by Sean Keller and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2018-02-12 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1960s and ’70s, architects, influenced by recent developments in computing and the rise of structuralist and poststructuralist thinking, began to radically rethink how architecture could be created. Though various new approaches gained favor, they had one thing in common: they advocated moving away from the traditional reliance on an individual architect’s knowledge and instincts and toward the use of external tools and processes that were considered objective, logical, or natural. Automatic architecture was born. The quixotic attempts to formulate such design processes extended modernist principles and tried to draw architecture closer to mathematics and the sciences. By focusing on design methods, and by examining evidence at a range of scales—from institutions to individual buildings—Automatic Architecture offers an alternative to narratives of this period that have presented postmodernism as a question of style, as the methods and techniques traced here have been more deeply consequential than the many stylistic shifts of the past half century. Sean Keller closes the book with an analysis of the contemporary condition, suggesting future paths for architectural practice that work through, but also beyond, the merely automatic.
Book Synopsis Flexible Forming for Fluid Architecture by : Arno Pronk
Download or read book Flexible Forming for Fluid Architecture written by Arno Pronk and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-10-11 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book on flexible formwork for fluid architecture is a multi-faceted research that covers a broad field: from design to material and technology, and from history to future developments. It offers a pragmatic approach that can be extended with more cases, materials, techniques and methods for fluid architecture, and provides a better understanding of the main aspects of fluid architecture and to help them find the most suitable combinations of all aspects. The book is a challenging experience with many new discoveries, including two patents: one on moulding of fluid surfaces and one on 3D printing of fibre–reinforced ice. It also features two world records: the larges span (30 meters) and the highest thin shell structure (30,5 meters) in ice as well as a method for the construction of a fully laminated shell structure in insulated glass.
Book Synopsis D'Arcy Wentworth Thompson's Generative Influences in Art, Design, and Architecture by : Ellen K. Levy
Download or read book D'Arcy Wentworth Thompson's Generative Influences in Art, Design, and Architecture written by Ellen K. Levy and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-03-11 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scottish zoologist D'Arcy Wentworth Thompson's visionary ideas in On Growth and Form continue to evolve a century after its publication, aligning it with current developments in art and science. Practitioners, theorists, and historians from art, science, and design reflect on his ongoing influence. Overall, the anthology links evolutionary theory to form generation in both scientific and cultural domains. It offers a close look at the ways cells, organisms, and rules become generative in fields often otherwise disconnected. United by Thompson's original exploration of how physical forces propel and shape living and nonliving forms, essays range from art, art history, and neuroscience to architecture, design, and biology. Contributors explore how translations are made from the discipline of biology to the cultural arena. They reflect on how Thompson's study relates to the current sciences of epigenesis, self-organization, biological complex systems, and the expanded evolutionary synthesis. Cross-disciplinary contributors explore the wide-ranging aesthetic ramifications of these sciences. A timeline links the history of evolutionary theory with cultural achievements, providing the reader with a valuable resource.
Book Synopsis Space Structures 4 by : G. A. R. Parke
Download or read book Space Structures 4 written by G. A. R. Parke and published by Thomas Telford. This book was released on 1993 with total page 1030 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The diversity of constructions included in this publication on space structures ranges from anten reflectors and masts positioned in space, to equally exciting terrestrial structures, notably large-span domes, barrel vaults, multi-layered grids, cable and membrane systems, and pneumatic structures. This collection of more than two hundred and twenty papers, presented in to volumes, is the work of leading international experts for presentation at the Fourth International Conference on Space Structures. These two volumes contain a prodigious amount of original and innovative information on space structures that will be of especial interest to engineers, architects and other professionals engaged in the planning, design, fabrication and erection of novel constructions.
Book Synopsis Parametric Experiments in Architecture by : Francesco Di Paola
Download or read book Parametric Experiments in Architecture written by Francesco Di Paola and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-08-29 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a comprehensive overview of the use of bamboo in the building industry. It systematically demonstrates bamboo’s utility in terms of its properties, describing the material properties of typical industrial bamboo products, and discussing their performance evaluation and optimization as building components and in the creation of building envelopes. The book presents the recent developments regarding the innovative ways to design and represent architecture through parametric survey tools, and describes the experimental geometrical-generative design process of a connection joint for free-form lightweight structures employing beams made of bamboo culms. It examines algorithmic-generative design themes, through processes of optimization, analysis, and geometrical-spatial verification, employing the potential of digital form-finding design and digital manufacturing techniques to validate the defined technological solution. This book appeals to scientists and professionals and is a valuable resource for civil engineers, designers and students interested in this unique plant material and its application in the building industry. Book Synopsis Shell Structures for Architecture by : Sigrid Adriaenssens
Download or read book Shell Structures for Architecture written by Sigrid Adriaenssens and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-03-21 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: *** Featuring a foreword by Pritzker Prize Winner Shigeru Ban *** Bringing together experts from research and practice, Shell Structures for Architecture: Form Finding and Optimization presents contemporary design methods for shell and gridshell structures, covering form-finding and structural optimization techniques. It introduces architecture and engineering practitioners and students to structural shells and provides computational techniques to develop complex curved structural surfaces, in the form of mathematics, computer algorithms, and design case studies. • Part I introduces the topic of shells, tracing the ancient relationship between structural form and forces, the basics of shell behaviour, and the evolution of form-finding and structural optimization techniques. • Part II familiarizes the reader with form-finding techniques to explore expressive structural geometries, covering the force density method, thrust network analysis, dynamic relaxation and particle-spring systems. • Part III focuses on shell shape and topology optimization, and provides a deeper understanding of gradient-based methods and meta-heuristic techniques. • Part IV contains precedent studies of realised shells and gridshells describing their innovative design and construction methods.
