This book was released on 1994-04-01 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The dynamic pattern of foreign direct investment (FDI) in developing countries shows a three-phase pattern. Despite government policies that promote it, initially the inflow of FDI is sluggish, followed by a period of considerable fluctuation before finally entering the stage of rapid growth. The paper explains the pattern through recourse to two concepts: the searching process of individual investors and the information externalities of investors in the aggregate. Policy implications that may serve to shift an economy of a developing country from small-scale FDI to one of rapidly expanding FDI are considered. As China is a clear example of this pattern, it has been selected to promote understanding of the process.

Book excerpt: The rapid growth of foreign banks has aroused a growing interest in the academic field and specifically as regards to the question of why foreign banks exist. This book aims to establish the relationship between trust as contextual knowledge capital built between the Chinese government and foreign banks and foreign banks. knowledge capital and the relationship between the former and foreign banks. long-term commitment. By investigating the development strategy of foreign banks and by examining and explaining the importance of foreign banks. long-term commitment to their development, this book has demonstrated that foreign banks established branches in China not only to follow their home-country customers in order to retain their knowledge capital but also to gain market access. Trust as contextual knowledge capital built between foreign banks and the Chinese government could assist their knowledge capital retention and their market access strategy. Foreign banks. long-term commitment could help them to achieve this contextual knowledge capital. This book thus has major implications for the development strategy of foreign banks in a government-oriented economy with a controlled banking sector. Download or read book Pioneering Economic Reform in China's Special Economic Zones written by Weiping Wu and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-08-17 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999, this volume assessed the economic situation of Shenzhen in Guangdong Province, China, including its trade connections with Hong Kong and foreign investments in the area. Designated as one of four Special Economic Zones (SEZ) as part of China’s domestic economic reform in 1979, Weiping Wu examines Shenzhen’s economic situation in the context of Hong Kong’s transition just two years prior to publication in 1997. Wu explores the developments in Shenzhen in local policy, labor costs, export performance, domestic linkages and complementarity with Hong Kong as a result of Hong Kong’s closer connection with the Shenzhen trade area. Shenzhen’s suitability can then be assessed in its role as an SEZ to experiment with and digest western technology and management techniques for inland China and as a buffer between China and the wider world.

This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper provides a critical survey of the literature on politico-institutional determinants of the government budget. We organize our discussion around two questions: Why did certain OECD countries, but not others, accumulate large public debts? Why did these fiscal imbalances appear in the last twenty years rather than sooner? We begin by discussing the “tax smoothing” model and conclude that this approach alone cannot provide complete answers to these questions. We then proceed to a discussion of political economy models, which we organize into six groups: (1) models based upon opportunistic policy makers and naive voters with “fiscal illusion”; (2) models of intergenerational redistributions; (3) models of debt as a strategic variable, linking the current government with the next one; (4) models of coalition governments; (5) models of geographically dispersed interests; and (6) models emphasizing the effects of budgetary institutions. We conclude by briefly discussing policy implications.
