Book excerpt: O semi-árido nordestino é uma região propícia ao desenvolvimento da agricultura irrigada, em particular a fruticultura. Na região do Sub-Médio São Francisco, o cultivo da bananeira vem crescendo nos últimos anos. Com o objetivo de obter dados para maximizar a eficiência do manejo da irrigação, foi instalado, em 1999, experimento com a cultura da bananeira (Musa AAB, subgrupo Prata, var. Pacovan), irrigada por um sistema de microaspersão, na estação experimental da Embrapa -Semi- Árido, em Petrolina -PE, onde foi avaliada a distribuição radicular e quantificadas a área foliar e a evapotranspiração real da cultura durante o primeiro ciclo. A avaliação do sistema radicular das plantas foi feita através da análise de imagens digitais, para determinação de área e comprimento das raízes. As determinações da área foliar da bananeira foram realizadas aos 65, 123 e 184 dias depois do plantio (DAP), quando as plantas entraram em plena floração. A evapotranspiração real (ETr) foi calculada pelo método do balanço hídrico da água no solo, realizado em determinados períodos ao longo do ciclo da cultura. Aproximadamente 80% das raízes da bananeira distribuíram-se até 0,80 m de distância do pseudocaule no sentido da entrelinha, enquanto 88% da área total das raízes se concentrou até a profundidade de 0,60 m, em um solo de textura arenosa, aos 371 DAP. A área foliar da "planta-mãe" da bananeira, no primeiro ciclo, teve sua maior taxa de crescimento entre os 120 e 180 DAP, totalizando uma área de 11,3 m2 aos 245 DAP. O consumo de água da bananeira foi calculado entre o primeiro mês depois do plantio das mudas até a colheita e observou-se consumo de 1.401 mm, com evapotranspiração diária máxima de 6,2 mm/dia e média de 3,3 mm/dia no período, para uma colheita equivalente a 10,8 t/ha. Os valores de Kc, determinados para os dados de ETo do modelo de Penman-Monteith F AO, foram de 0,6; 0,5; 1,2; e 0,9, respectivamente para as fases de desenvolvimento vegetativo I, desenvolvimento vegetativo II, floração e desenvolvimento dos frutos e colheita. Para os dados de ETo calculados pelo tanque classe A, os valores de Kc foram de 0,6; 0,6; 1,0; e 0,9, para as mesmas fases descritas anteriormente.

From the American perspective the War of 1812 began with disasters in its invasion of Canada, but against all expectations the infant US Navy had scored significant victories at sea. The most strategically significant of these was the campaign by the frigate USS Essex, which had almost annihilated the lucrative British whaling trade in the south Pacific. Therefore, Phoebe was diverted to hunt down and destroy this highly successful commerce-raider. After an epic search, Phoebe tracked her prey to neutral Valparaiso where the American frigate was blockaded and,in a very bloody battle, eventually captured. The American captain, David Porter, published a self-serving account of his actions which ever since has mired the battle in controversy, so this British naval eyewitness account is an important counter-balance. It is one of the lesser-known campaigns of a war which is currently celebrating its bicentenary, but its inherent drama inspired the plot of Patrick O'Brian's novel The Far Side of the World, although in its movie adaptation Master & Commander the American frigate is transformed into a French privateer.
