Book excerpt: Influenza: Complete Spectrum – II is published in continuation with the Influenza: Complete Spectrum – I, and the second part converges on the clinical aspect of influenza. It also covers the various influenza immunization programs and policies being run in India to prevent and decrease the incidence of influenza and its complications among children and adults. The course of influenza is mild and self-limited. However, serious complications leading to morbidity and death occur, especially in those with underlying chronic illnesses. The book covers very well the complications and prognosis of influenza. The publication details out why, how, and when influenza vaccination should be exercised in children and adults especially keeping in mind the recent pandemic of H1N1. The book also has a chapter designated to the management of influenza which not only covers antivirals but also the other aspects of managing a patient of influenza and preventing its spread. The authors of the book have also elaborated on the present vis-à-vis future aspects related to influenza vaccine, an often ignored part of influenza management. Discussing complications and prognosis of influenza Describing influenza vaccination for adults and children Understanding the management and prevention of influenza Throwing some light on critical appraise of various immunization programs and policies run for influenza in India Understanding current gap in effective vaccination and management practices for influenza and how to bridge the same in future

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Elsevier’s project, Influenza: Complete Spectrum–I, under the aegis of ECAB Clinical Update, aims at a comprehensive, well-illustrated and state-of the-art survey of salient aspects of the age-old infectious disease, influenza, which is notorious for causing seasonal epidemics and, rarely, pandemics. A hallmark of influenza viruses is their ability to cause global worldwide epidemics affecting a great number of individuals, or pandemics. Pandemic episodes are solely attributed to influenza A viruses and they occur every 10–50 years. Today, it is clear that influenza cannot be eradicated, at least in the foreseeable future. We are therefore, condemned to live with it though with better preparedness and endeavor to cope with its onslaught. The book, Influenza: Complete Spectrum–I, deals with the fundamentals and allied matters concerning influenza.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public health law has been a subject of much controversy and contestation, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic broke out. This timely book inquires into the foundational principles of a form of public health law that takes seriously the inherent dignity of the human person. Written from a multidisciplinary perspective, this illuminating study makes the case that the rule of law, just as much as population health, is an essential determinant of human well-being. Choosing the case of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China, where life expectancy is among the highest in the world, yet whose well-established rule of law tradition is oft perceived to be under strain, in describing the central dilemmas of public health law, it makes an original contribution to our knowledge of comparative public health law and public health ethics. Situating Hong Kong’s public health law in the context of global health, The Law and Regulation of Public Health should appeal across the world to students and scholars of public health, medical law, public law, comparative law, and international law. It accessibly explains the law to epidemiologists and public health policymakers, and public health to jurists and legal practitioners. This book lucidly urges professionals of public health and law to reflect on how the myriad legal instruments and legal institutions should best be used to promote and protect public health in ways that are at once ethical and lawful. It is a must read for anyone who is interested in gaining insights into public health law and regulation in this highly internationalised Chinese Special Administrative Region.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the increase in lifestyle-related diseases like diabetes and hypertension the prevalence of Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is increasing exponentially and with it is increasing the burden of its ominous consequence, End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). While ESRD is no longer a death sentence with the advent of efficient renal replacement therapies and the success of renal transplantation, factors such as high cost of these procedures, limited availability of donated kidneys and not enough number of centers equipped with these facilities puts the effective management of ESRD beyond the reach of an average person many-a-times. Additionally the presence of co-existing diseases that contribute to and sometimes complicate the renal impairment as well as delayed referral of the patients to nephrologists also makes matters worse. ESRD is not just a medical but also a social and economic condition that devastates the person and his/her entire family. Hence, early detection and effective prevention of progression of CKD in early stages to advanced CKD and ESRD is the call of the day. In fact, understanding the pathophysiology of the condition and adopting methods of primordial prevention in populations at risk may be desirable to ensure reduction in the incidence of CKD. In those with established CKD, a proactive approach to manage the disease manifestations and limit the ravages of other comorbidities is desirable. For those in advanced stages of CKD, the institution of an appropriate renal replacement therapy individually suited to the patient keeping in view the medical status, lifestyle requirements, economic viability and social acceptability should be advised. This book will help the reader understand the intricacies of the aspects mentioned above and guide the practitioner to diagnose and manage End Stage Renal Disease with special reference to practical experience of the same in India. The authors have put together the most relevant facts about the disease for an easy comprehension and understanding of the same by practitioners and students across the specialty.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The MATSim (Multi-Agent Transport Simulation) software project was started around 2006 with the goal of generating traffic and congestion patterns by following individual synthetic travelers through their daily or weekly activity programme. It has since then evolved from a collection of stand-alone C++ programs to an integrated Java-based framework which is publicly hosted, open-source available, automatically regression tested. It is currently used by about 40 groups throughout the world. This book takes stock of the current status. The first part of the book gives an introduction to the most important concepts, with the intention of enabling a potential user to set up and run basic simulations. The second part of the book describes how the basic functionality can be extended, for example by adding schedule-based public transit, electric or autonomous cars, paratransit, or within-day replanning. For each extension, the text provides pointers to the additional documentation and to the code base. It is also discussed how people with appropriate Java programming skills can write their own extensions, and plug them into the MATSim core. The project has started from the basic idea that traffic is a consequence of human behavior, and thus humans and their behavior should be the starting point of all modelling, and with the intuition that when simulations with 100 million particles are possible in computational physics, then behavior-oriented simulations with 10 million travelers should be possible in travel behavior research. The initial implementations thus combined concepts from computational physics and complex adaptive systems with concepts from travel behavior research. The third part of the book looks at theoretical concepts that are able to describe important aspects of the simulation system; for example, under certain conditions the code becomes a Monte Carlo engine sampling from a discrete choice model. Another important aspect is the interpretation of the MATSim score as utility in the microeconomic sense, opening up a connection to benefit cost analysis. Finally, the book collects use cases as they have been undertaken with MATSim. All current users of MATSim were invited to submit their work, and many followed with sometimes crisp and short and sometimes longer contributions, always with pointers to additional references. We hope that the book will become an invitation to explore, to build and to extend agent-based modeling of travel behavior from the stable and well tested core of MATSim documented here.

Book excerpt: A concise description of models and quantitative parameters in structural chemistry and their interrelations, with 280 tables and >3000 references giving the most up-to-date experimental data on energy characteristics of atoms, molecules and crystals (ionisation potentials, electron affinities, bond energies, heats of phase transitions, band and lattice energies), optical properties (refractive index, polarisability), spectroscopic characteristics and geometrical parameters (bond distances and angles, coordination numbers) of substances in gaseous, liquid and solid states, in glasses and melts, for various thermodynamic conditions. Systems of metallic, covalent, ionic and van der Waals radii, effective atomic charges and other empirical and semi-empirical models are critically revised. Special attention is given to new and growing areas: structural studies of solids under high pressures and van der Waals molecules in gases. The book is addressed to researchers, academics, postgraduates and advanced-course students in crystallography, materials science, physical chemistry of solids.
