Book excerpt: Com a presente pesquisa, procurou-se observar os efeitos de quatro niveis de nitrogenio e quatro densidades de plantas no rendimento de graos e caracteristicas morfologicas de duas cultivares de milho. O ensaio foi estabelecido na Estacao Experimental Agronomico da UFRGS, em solo da unidade de mapeamento Arroio dos Ratos, no ano agricola de 1973/74. Utilizou-se a cultivar precoce DK 3S-40 e a tardia Agroceres-28 nas densidades de 35.000, 50.000, 65.000 e 80.000 plantas/ha e nos niveis de 20, 90 100 e 230 kg/ha de nitrogenio. Os resultados evidenciaram que a cultivar precoce produziu maior rendimento de graos que a tardia, na media dos tratamentos. Ambas as cultivares responderam, em aumento de producao de graos, ate o mais alto nivel de nitrogenio aplicado. Entretanto, na media dos niveis de nitrogenio, a cultivar precoce obteve o maximo rendimento de graos com 63.000 plantas/ha e a tardia com 35.000 plantas/ha. Para cada cultivar, a densidade otima variou conforme os niveis de nitrogenio. A precoce alcancou o maior rendimento de graos com o mais elevado nivel deste nutriente e densidade de 65.000 plantas/ha, sem se diferenciar estatisticamente da populacao de 80.000 plantas/ha. A maxima producao de graos da cultivar tardia ocorreu no maior nivel de nitrogenio e populacao de 35.000 plantas/ha. As duas cultivares aumentaram significativamente os componentes de rendimento de graos, peso medio de graos por espiga e numero de espigas por plantas, ate os niveis de 160 e 90 kg/ha de nitrogenio, respectivamente, (...).

O melhoramento genetico incorporou o gene opaco-2, com caracter de alta qualidade proteica, a cultivares agronomicamente superiores, e associado aos genes modificadores de endosperma, possibilitou sua exploracao agricola e industrial. A introducao do gene opaco-2, que originou as cultivares \tQPM, alterou a qualidade da proteina reduzindo a fracao prolamina (zeina) e aumentando as fracoes albumina, globulina e glutelina (nao zeinas) de maior valor biologico. Uma fonte de variacao importante na producao e na qualidade de proteina e a adubacao nitrogenada, por ser o nitrogenio constituinte essencial dos aminoacidos e fundamental na sintese proteica regulando a qualidade biologica da proteina por meio dos teores das fracoes zeinas e nao-zeinas. A producao de graos e a qualidade proteica tem sido relacionadas com a disponibilidade de nitrogenio e seus efeitos sobre os componentes de rendimento. Como estes componentes formam-se em diferentes estadios de planta, podem ser afetados quando o nitrogenio e fornecido em diferentes epocas de estacao de crescimento-desenvolvimento. O experimento foi conduzido na FCAVJ-UNESP em 1996/97, com objetivo de avaliar a interdependencia entre cultivares e adubacao nitrogenada em diferentes doses e epocas de parcelamento, em relacao a producao de graos e qualidade energetico-proteica. Foram avaliadas duas cultivares QPM e tres normais submetidas a seis arranjos de epocas da adubacao nitrogenada fracionada em duas e tres vezes, e uma testemunha sem nitrogenio. O delineamento foi em blocos ao acaso, disposto num esquema fatorial, com quatro repeticoes. Todas as parcelas, exceto a testemunha, receberam N na semeadura, 20 ou 40 kg/ha; e adubacao em cobertura na 6 e/ou 12 folhas, totalizando 100 kg/ha de N. Foram determinados rendimento de graos, espessura do colmo; acamamento + quebramento de plantas, altura da espiga; largura e comprimento do grao; numero de fileiras de graos; diametro da espiga e do sabugo; massa de mil graos; indice de colheita; densidade do grao; teores de oleo, proteina, triptofano e lisina no grao, teores de triptofano e lisina na proteina; e, producoes de oleo, proteina, triptofano e lisina por area. A adubacao nitrogenada influenciou o rendimento de graos, espessura do colmo, altura de espigas e producoes de proteina, oleo, triptofano e lisina por area. Nao houve influencia dos arranjos de doses e epocas de adubacao nitrogenada sobre as caracteristicas avaliadas. O parcelamento da adubacao nitrogenada em duas e/ou tres vezes nao mostrou diferenca significativas para nenhuma caracteristica. As cultivares normais foram superiores no rendimento de graos (10%), teor de proteina nos graos (3%); massa de mil graos (5%); e producao de proteina por area (13%). As cultivares QPM foram superiores na densidade do grao (0,24%); teores de oleo (32%), triptofano (50%) e lisina (39%) no grao; teores de triptofano (52%) e lisina (46%) na proteina; producoes de triptofano (32%), lisian (27%) e oleo (19%) por area.

In most cases, growers make considerable effort to reduce the negative economic impact of weeds because they compete with crops for resources and hinder field operations, thereby affecting crop productivity and quality, and ultimately the sustainability of agriculture. Weed control in production agriculture is commonly achieved through the integration of chemical, biological, and mechanical management methods. Chemicals (herbicides) usually inhibit the growth and establishment of weed plants by interfering with various physiological and biochemical pathways. Biological methods include crop competition, smother crops, rotation crops, and allelopathy, as well as specific insect predators and plant pathogens. Mechanical methods encompass an array of tools from short handled hoes to sophisticated video-guided robotic machines. Integrating these technologies, in order to relieve the negative impacts of weeds on crop production in a way that allows growers to optimize profits and preserve human health and the environment, is the science of weed management.
