Today there is enough empirical evidence showing the link between social origin and educational performance. The first chapter of this book shows how the social class, socio-economic status of family and parents' expectations about the academic development of their children influence in the educational performance. Chapter two focuses on the empirical literature regarding the relationship of the 65% instructional expenditure ratio, education production function, student achievement, and school district wealth. Chapter three dives into the aspects of executive functioning and its relation to academic achievement, as well as analyses the connection between the academic achievement and the perception the children have of their own executive functioning. Chapter four analyses in detail, in accordance with previous theoretical and empirical data, self-protective mechanisms, self-handicapping and defensive pessimism. Some examples of these actions are interactive groups (or heterogeneous grouping in the classroom with reorganisation of human resources), extension of the learning time, homework clubs, tutored libraries, family and community educative participation, family education, or dialogic literary gatherings. All these actions have been defined as successful educational actions, which mean that they lead to both efficiency and equity. Finally, recommendations for policy and practice are included and discussed.

Sloan School of Management and (2) what changes occur in the attitudes and values of students during their management education. The study was carried out with 2 student populations (one was enrolled in a 2-year curriculum leading to an S.M. degree in management, and the other was a group of middlelevel managers sent by their companies to obtain the degree in 12 months), a group of senior executives attending the School for a 10-week management development course, and the faculty. Attitudes were surveyed with an objective questionnaire consisting of 100 belief or value statements; factor analysis indicated 19 reliable attitude scales, including in a scale only those items tending to cluster. On at least half the scales, faculty and executives differed markedly in attitudes and values. The initial position of the graduate student fell between the faculty and executive extremes. The faculty apparently influenced the students in a number of attitude areas but made the graduates less similar to managers whom they are likely to encounter in industry.

This study investigated German secondary school students’ attitudes toward physical education. Results have the intention to reveal what attitudes towards physical education German students have and which factors influence these attitudes. The study sample contained students from the different school types Gymnasium, Realschule, and Haupt-/Werkrealschule. The students were surveyed via questionnaire that was developed based on validated research instruments from prior studies in the field. Data was analyzed integrating independent variables such as students' gender, physical education grade, grade point average, body mass index, socioeconomic status, type of school, citizenship, and the exercise and physical activity behavior of students, their parents and their peers.
