This book was released on 2001 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is a growing concern about the quantity of aircraft deicing agents (primarily ethylene glycol (EG) or propylene glycol (PG)) that migrate offsite and inadvertently contaminate the soil and water environments. However it is known that vegetation can enhance the removal of man-made organic compounds and pollutants in soil environments by plant uptake and microbial degradation in the rhizosphere. Therefore, three objectives of this research were to: 1) determine the influence of rhizosphere microorganisms on the degradation of ethylene glycol (EG) and propylene glycol (PG); 2) identify environmental variables affecting the degradation of EG and PG in soil; and 3) determine the influence of vegetation on EG and PG movement in soil. Results from these studies found that degradation of EG and PG was enhanced in rhizosphere soils compared with nonvegetated soils. Also, increased soil temperatures enhanced the mineralization of EG and PG, and aquatic emergent plants significantly enhanced mineralization of EG and PG in surface water systems. Lastly. results from this study indicate vegetation reduced the quantity of PG and EG that moved through the soil profile.

Book Synopsis CRC Handbook of Laboratory Model Systems for Microbial Ecosystems by : Julian W.T. Wimpenny
Download or read book CRC Handbook of Laboratory Model Systems for Microbial Ecosystems written by Julian W.T. Wimpenny and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1988-10-31 with total page 292 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These volumes present the main classes of useful laboratory model systems used to study microbial ecosystems, with emphasis on the practical details for the use of each model. The most commonly used model, the homogeneous fermenter, is featured along with linked homogeneous culture systems, film fermenters, and percolating columns. Additionally, gel-stabilized culture systems which incorporate molecular diffusion as their main solute transfer mechanism and the microbial colony are explained. Chapters comparing model systems with "microcosms" are included, along with discussions of the value of computer models in microbial ecosystem research. Highlighted is a global discussion of the value of laboratory models in microbial ecology.

Download or read book Turfgrass written by John C. Stier and published by ACSESS. This book was released on 2020-01-22 with total page 1340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sustainability is a key framework for analyzing biological systems—and turfgrass is no exception. It is part of a complex that encompasses turfgrass interactions with different environments and the suitability of different turfgrasses for specific environments. In addition to its biological role, turfgrass—in the form of lawns, green spaces, and playing surfaces—brings beneficial sociological effects to an increasingly urbanized society. This book presents a comprehensive overview of current knowledge and issues in the field of turfgrass research and management, including the genetics and breeding, the diseases and pests, and the ecology of turfgrasses, and will appeal to a broad spectrum of readers.
Book Synopsis The Pesticide Encyclopedia by : Kalyani Paranjape
Download or read book The Pesticide Encyclopedia written by Kalyani Paranjape and published by CABI. This book was released on 2014-12-22 with total page 727 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In today's world, food security is an important issue. Food shortages push prices up, impacting upon the health and well-being of hundreds of millions of rural poor across the globe. One way to increase food security is to decrease the amount of yield lost to pests. The Pesticide Encyclopedia provides a comprehensive overview of the fight against pests, covering chemical pesticides, biocontrol agents and biopesticides. It also covers interrelated topics such as pesticide toxicity, legislation and regulation, handling, storage and safety aspects, IPM techniques, resistance management, interaction of pesticides with soil and the environment. An important reference for policy makers, advisers and students and researchers of crop science, this book also includes useful notes on commonly known plant diseases and pests.
